Honestly, it's not a surprise that the article is manipulative and completely anti-China. We knew that was going to be the case before they posted it. Typical Western media reporting as we've talked extensively about on this channel.

It baffles me that people can't understand the simple concept of "influencer marketing". This is a channel with 200k+ subscribers and tons of views every day. Of course you will get invited to do sponsored trips and promotional videos. This is how online influencers work. If you were a British expat living in America, vlogging about American life, and had the same following you would 100% be invited by American tourism agencies to film content....oh wait some American tourism agencies are owned by the US government? Should we portray you as someone who is colluding with a foreign government? Double Standard
well of course not in that example.... but when that British expat starts talking about how great the Trump administration and how great the US gov't is and then you he also starts criticizing foreign medias as lies.......then that becomes a different story.

Absolutely agree. The barrets rose to significant influencers on China topics. I like their content. But i don't expect journalistic research of political issues. I am from Germany and so far I think our public opinion about China is not as biased as it seems to be in UK and US.
There are plenty tourist organisations that promote local tourism. To invite social media influencers is a very regularly used tool to help promote those local areas.
We all know western media demonize china, but the question is why? What for? Who benefit from?

Have lived in Europe for more than 6 years as a Chinese, really surprising that the sense of ideology justice is so strong among normal people, they really genuinely believe capitalism as well as western democracy system is justice while any kind of communism is evil so that it should be removed from earth. While back in China, although we have more than 0.1 billion CCP members, public doesn't really talk about capitalism or communism in their daily life and seldom has the opinion that western capitalism should be eradicated. Most of the people including government officials really only care on how to make their life better, physically and mentally. Mocking on hypocrisy of western democracies is more like a causal chat topic for them.
I like the social democracy of the West as it is a mix of capitalism and socialism (in production of common goods). China's socialism has morphed into a mixed market economy. The one party system too has evolved into appointment of officials from grassroots responsive to the needs of local community. It works well for China so far. But the West is determined to destroy it.

Sacarstically, last week in Bristol, there was a protest and protesters were using a similar level of violence to the Police officers, and some Police officers were injured. I first heard this from Fernando at FerMeBe a couple of days ago. He exposed The Times' attack of the expats UA-camrs in China. Fernando was in one of Oli's videos. It's ashamed that everytime you get these bogus attacks, you will have to put extra effort to clarify and explain yourselves. It's just exhausting, but I think you did the right thing by doing so. They said the only proof that they are in China is the Chinese character on Lee's hat (suggesting they're not even necessarily in China, all contents are fake), while every picture/video was filmed in China and I personally met them in Shanghai.
Let's forget about how much they tried to mislead as they actually said the father and son moved to China, only quotes from others are not called "investigation", especially when the sources are not integral. They did no research to check the validity of their videos and provided no proof of them being sponsored by the government. They simply opened their mouths and bark. Some companies are owned by governments, especially in tourism industry. Are there no government owned companies in your "free" country? Don't they make commercials?

I have observed many overseas chinese are among the international and chinese audience who watch them. We value and enjoy them especially because they are not filtered and distorted by propagandists like the 2 writers of the Times Newspaper. We want the Truth about China and not all of us can afford to visit China so UA-camrs' videos , many are live streams are our sources of the actual way of life in China. The Times articles and many similar ones from main mass media put us off because they sell fake news, and we do not want to be lied to. I am a teacher, I teach my students not to lie. Please have a basic moral standard as a journalist whose man task is to inform like a doctor's is to heal. Live up to the oath of your profession. Do not use doublespeak.

Being a Chinese living in Australia, I found it pretty hard to deal with the western propoganda and people influenced by it. Some times I went a long way to clarify the painted images by the western propoganda but most of times I simply give up.
It's hard. I live in canada(was born here sadly) and people here are just stupid. Even in some friend groupchat i sometime see some anti Chinese stuff. I get mad but i won't say anything cause it's pointless talking about that to those kind of people.

When you put yourself out there, regardless of what you do or say, there are always going to be people that disagree with you, especially if your content is based around China, which at this point in time is such a polarising subject. At the end of the day, if you believe within yourself that you do go about life with dignity, haven't hurt anyone, haven't broken any laws, your family and friends support you, and you can sleep well at night, then that is all that really matters.
I am sure that as your channel grows and you gain a larger following, there are definitely going to be even more people that disagree with what you are doing, but at the same time, there will also be many more people that support you, so I guess being known for what you do is somewhat of a double-edged sword these days.

Also because The Times is a British paper, which means a British court would most likely have the appropriate jurisdiction, and in British courts, the author or journalist has the burden of proof, i.e. Ben Ellery and Tom Knowles have to be able to prove that the Barretts are paid by the Chinese Government or they lose the case.
