  • This week we took a little day trip to visit our 20th national park: Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky! Located in southern Kentucky almost on the Tennessee border, this cave is the LARGEST known cave in the WORLD! To give you a better idea of just how HUGE this cave is, second largest cave is half the size of this one.
We had so much fun going inside the cave for a self-guided tour, hiking to a sink hole, and wandering through a historic church left behind by some of the communities that used to call this park home.

Aww, seeing your visit made me really want to go back. I'm glad they have the caves open for exploring. A self-guided tour may even be the best way to experience the cave. We toured as part of an enormous group, so we couldn't linger in interesting places or pause to take too many pictures. If you go again, I recommend staying in one of the cabins on the property. We did that and had private access to the park after it officially closed, which is a pretty unique way to experience a National Park.

I was wondering if those cabins were good to stay in. They looked super cute driving by! We'd love to stay on property next time we visit and hopefully add a kayaking trip to the itinerary, too. :)

If you like touring caves, I highly recommend going to Carlsbad Caverns. Not as large as Mammoth Cafe, but so amazingly beautiful with a huge variety of formations.

I was at Mammoth Cave in early August. Very big stuff. However covid shut down about 80%, maybe 90% of the paths. Really did not meet my expectation so I went to some private ones. Those were worth it. They did not shut down routes and encouraged flash photography.

Even boarded up the before heading out. So now we're back on the beach catching up on our favorite shows. This was a fun😁

Little known history. A slave named York, led torch led tours, and people ate dinners in Mammoth Cave by those torches. He explored in Mammoth Cave before many dared.
He also explored with Lewis and Clark, and was eventually free.

If you want to see more caves once pandemic is over you could come to Slovakia. We are a little country in the central Europe but we have 13 caves open to public including:
Two ice caves, one of them being in lower altitude than is common for ice caves which makes it a worldwide unique cave
Two caves that are part of the largest cave system in the central Europe
A cave that has unique aragonite formations, only one of three in the whole world
Once here you could also go to visit one of the hundreds of medieval castles and go for a hike in the High Tatra mountains. And since we're such a small country pretty much all of those activities can be done in a single region within an hour or so of driving distance from each other (but of course there are more caves, castles and mountains all over our country).

    • @chrisandsara
