My late piping teacher used to tell me such wonderful stories about playing in the Edinburgh Police alongside JDB. Also, some pretty good ones about walking the beat with him!😉
Very good, though the old recordings don't always reproduce the sound of the pipes well.
Interesting that in Paddy's Leather Breeches he quickly plays through the first two notes of the GDE triplets and puts most weight on the last note. How many pipers play in that style?
I was very fortunate to have been tutored by John D. back in the '70's and '80's at several College of Piping clinics. He fine tuned my expression.

Ich finde der spielt gar nicht so schön, alles so schnell wie möglich, teils unmusikalisch und unbetont. Damit kann man heute beim Wettbewerb keinen Blumentopf mehr gewinnen. Dabei gibt es Aufnahmen aus der Zeit die schon so spielen wie es heute gespielt wird. Es ist nur verwunderlich wie weiche Finger John hat und wie gewagt teils seine Uniformen waren. Kann man sich bestimmt drüber streiten ob er gut war. Die Dokumentation ist trotzdem interessant.
Ich würde sagen, es gab früher einfach mehr individuelle Stile und Interpretationen als heute. Heute ist die Szene viel vernetzter, der Unterricht standardisierter, was zu mehr Konsens und Homogenität beiträgt. Ob das für Volksmusik zwingend besser ist lass ich mal offen. Klar befindet sich das technische Könnnen heute auf einem Niveau, das Mitte 20. Jrh. unvorstellbar gewesen wäre, dennoch haben die alten Aufnahmen m.E. ihren Reiz eben weil sie Arten klassischen Pipings ausserhalb des modernen Competition-stils aufzeigen. Johns Markenzeichen waren seine flinken Finger und sein damals unglaubliches Tempo, und seine wild verzierten Hornpipes. Er war eine Art Lincoln Hilton der 60er. Klar, er würde heute wohl keine Preise mehr gewinnen, dennoch wird er von den Judges verehrt und viele haben ihn noch persönlich gekannt. Funny, innit? 😉
