I, together with my kids, own 3 Ruger 10-22’s and 1 Marlin Model 60. The 3 Ruger’s are all from different decades and I’ve noticed that the older ones are made with much better quality than the newer ones. The Marlin is from the early 80’s and will easily outshoot the Rugers, however, our most accurate .22 is a cheap ‘Walmart special’ Mossberg .22 bolt action. The Mossberg was $99 dollars and shoots WAY under 2” groups at 50 yards all day long with cheap ammo. Under 1” groups with quality ammo. Excellent video. Just subscribed.

I've got an old Ruger 10/22 that has the long wood stock on it that goes all the way to the end of the barrel.
It has a metal trigger housing instead of polymer and the magazine is of much nicer quality as well. It has a smooth glossy finish on it, not the matte finish on my newer ones.
Yeah, they don't make them like they used to. But I'm still buying a new one. And they still shoot great.

Bought 2 of the Mossberg, bolt was crap, accuracy as well. Ruger is where it’s at. Marlin 22 mag’s bolt action had several(x-mass) and asked people about them they all said they were great except one. Every body I knew loved that 22 ruger. No complaints about them.

I make my own speed loaders for my Marlin Glenfield 60. I take a few lengths of clear acrylic tubing with small corks blocking the ends, have them pre-loaded with 17 rounds. Pull the spring mag tube out, line up one of my acrylic tubes and let them slid in nice and easy, re-install the spring mag tube. Ready to go quick !

Meh I was buying .22LR by the 1400 round "bucket 'o bullets" back when it was cheap. I'm a minor "prepper" so I'm sitting on around 10k Remingon "golden bullets" that I bought back when it was about 5¢ per round or less. I think I got some of the 1400 round buckets for about $59... so I can probably just dip into my stash a little if i decide to go plinking... but 5k rounds is the least I will ever own until zombie apocalypse/government collapse/global planet killer/Mad Max/Idiocracy happens. I could also probably make a profit of around 5k USD if I sold all of my Federal 12ga 00 buckshot and Winchester 1720 fps rifled slugs at current prices lol. My Mossburg 500 pump and Ruger 10/22 are very high on the best apocalypse loadout XD.

I own both the model 60 and the 10/22. My Marlin is a real Marlin and my Ruger is modified with a better trigger group and flash suppressor. Both have cheap Barska 3×9 scopes and both are zeroed at 50 yards. That said, my Marlin has consistently outshot my Ruger, using a bench rest, every time. It's very close, usually within 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch but the Marlin is constantly more accurate. Both are very good guns but all things being equal, I think it would be a very rare thing for a Ruger to beat a Marlin in accuracy.

  • @swdw973

New Marlin 60's aren't as accurate as the older ones with the longer barrel. At an Appleseed shoot, my old marlin was outshooting 10/22's with bull barrels on them. Only thing I ever did to it was use some sand paper to make sure I had equal clearance in the barrel channel. The instructors were impressed at how accurate the rifle was. When we went to long range with the .22, it put 10 out of 10 shots on a 4 inch square multiple times at 100 yards, with peep sites, using bulk federal ammo on the 2nd day. The newer ones just can't match that. However, maybe Ruger will bring the model 60 back with better quality now that they own it, and preferably with the older longer barrel.

... in order to prevent your video from influencing my comment , I stopped the vid at the 5 sec mark . ... I have owned and shot both the mod 60 and the 10-22 since the mid 1960s and have no doubt that the model 60 has superior accuracy ... it's only drawback is the reloading process for the tube magazine. It's unfortunate that Ruger now owns Marlin and has discontinued the model 60.

I have used both of these firearms many times. I have owned a 10-22 since 1987. It looks a lot like the one in use in this video. With open sights or a 0x HUD, my 10-22 can give 3/4" - 1.0" groupings at 25 yards. Don't need a scope for that, just a good rest on our 42" high deck rail from wide legged standing position.
I enjoy shooting a Marlin. My neighbor got his son one about ten years ago. I have fired that one in some target plinking sessions, but my first Marlin use was back in the late 1960's, using a good friend's Marlin. I seem to recall that tube magazine will hold about sixteen 22LR rounds, which is a substantial amount of sustained firepower from a modest weapon. I own 4 standard 10 rd drum mags for the 10-22, usually enough to scratch my plinking itch in one go.
Thank you for torturing me with your reloading, laughing out loud for it.

I sanded and polished the trigger/sear points and it made a huge difference in trigger feel.

Thank you for the comparison and the review. I will consider it when I take my two guns to the range and make my own comparison.
About 50 years ago my brother in law purchased a Ruger 10-22. I thought it was the neatest gun I had ever seen. Going with him was a treat. I suppose we shot thousands of rounds through that gun. He still owns it today.
Several years ago I bought a Ruger 10-22 from a fellow at work. It was a new gun that he had won at a convention. I added some 25 shot banana clips and thought I had found the funniest plinking gun on the market.
A few years later I was at the VietNam Veterans Booth at the county fair. They were raffling off a .270 and a .22. I signed up and asked when they were going to call me and tell me I had won. The fellow laughed and said they had another fair type event before the drawing but he would call me after that one, providing I won. About six weeks later he called and said he had the Marlin Model 60 .22 I had won. He wanted to meet with me and give me my new gun. We got together and I signed all the legal documents and I now have a Marlin Model 60 .22 and a Ruger 10-22. The Marlin is another fun plinking gun.
I have never taken both guns to the range and did a side by side test. I just took them there and shot them randomly. I enjoy both guns quite a bit. They are both sweet guns to shoot. Neither of them have ever malfunctioned.
One advantage of the Ruger is the accessories are endless. However that has not been my thing. The Marlin on the other hand seems to fit me and my lifestyle better. I actually like to shoot the Marlin a little bit more.
One thing for certain, a shooter can’t go wrong by owning one or the other or both.

I have played with the 10/22 platform since 1987; today it is a no brainer with aftermarket parts. But, to me back then in 1987 it was clear which rifle was better. Price has always been higher for the 10/22, but the model 60 was a good rifle for a budget minded person. 10/22 hands down from 1964 on to today.... It is as close to a must own family rifle as I can come up with in my mind - I have never seen a kid who did not flat-out love a 10/22.

@@blackhawk7r221 Hey Hawk - Yea, I agree, it was a magazine loader rifle; everything else to them was old. I have had them pick up or hold the magazine and say, "I want to shoot this one." Back in the late 80's, I was the first guy to buy (spend the money) on a 10/22 - everybody father's had .22LR hand-me-downs fire arms. I like the 10/22 mag because it was flush on the bottom of the stock - I had just got out of the Corps and it was mag feed; I got sprayed with the same silly spray and spent the money. I liked it because it was flush - and they liked it because it was a Magazine.... Go figure. It is so much safer not having kids around a muzzle loading a firearm on their own - I think they liked that too.

Interesting video. I have 2 Ruger 10/22 target rifles. One that I built myself and a factory built gun that I bought for my girlfriend. They both shoot very well. I no longer own a model 60 but I wish I did, I am currently looking for an older model on the used market. In my area, southwest Arkansas, everyone hated on the Marlin saying it always jammed and loved on the Ruger saying it never jammed. This is partially true in my experience. The Marlin is more ammo sensitive than the Ruger. In the early 80's we had a ton of (dirty ammo) coming in from cheap manufacturers over seas. The solution to this problem was to remove and deep clean the bolt and receiver and oil it up every few shooting trips, not hard to do. My experience with the older 10/22 factory rifles and the older Marlin's with the micro groove barrels, the Marlin won every time. If the model 60 had the after market support that the 10/22 has, it would be a whole new ballgame. I understand that the design of the Marlin makes it harder to customize than the Ruger. I would like to see a second round of this video, but using an older (true Marlin) model 60. I liked this video and it is the first one of yours that I have ever seen, just subbed your channel, waiting for more. Thank you for the time, effort and money you have put into this.

Love the discussion. My thought is that the manufacturing for both guns has changed over time, including in the materials selected for use in them. The gun designs are rock solid for both, but some eras of 10/22 manufacturing were better than others. Same for the Model 60. I tend to believe (rightly or wrongly based on holding and shooting several of each, but not through research, so take this as an uninformed "feeling" rather than a factual observation), both guns seem to me to have hit their peak in the late 80s or early 90s. That was when manufacturing techniques were super dialed in and the materials were largely unchanged from the 1960s and 70s. After that, it FEELS to me like both guns started saving costs in manufacturing. I don't believe those measures resulted in guns that shot any less true, but I do think you can see that there's less steel and wood and more aluminum and plastic in later models of both. To finish the thought, earlier this week, my daughter's fiance texted me and asked what .22 LR he should get. I replied "A Ruger 10/22 if you like a removable magazine, or a Marlin 60 if you prefer a tube-feed, more traditional design." I went on to name a few honorable mentions... point is that's how I ended up here. Sure, there are better semi-autos out there (Browning, anyone?), but dollar for dollar, these are working man's .22 rifles that do EXACTLY what they should year in, year out. I think Savage makes a great budget .22 and I'm impressed with Winchester's new (foreign made with a plastic rail system) Wildcat, caveats aside. But the 60 is the tube feed gold standard, as is the 10/22 for a mag fed gun.

I own both, but neither are anywhere near current production. Both have been made for decades in a wide varieties of configurations through various ups and downs of QC at their respective factories. I wouldn't rank either model over the other. In reality it comes down to your personal preference and the actual individual rifle. With decent optics you can easily shoot either to minute of squirrel . Aesthetics enters into the choice as well. My oldest Model 60 has a high quality black walnut stock with figure from the factory (I recall around 1965). I've never seen a factory 10-22 with anything other than a utilitarian stock. While current synthetic stocks are more practical than wood (and both have come with such), I'm still a sucker for a quality wood stock.

I'm with you on aesthetics. My Sportster model 10/22 came with a black walnut stock, with checkered knurling on the forearm and grip. Walnut isn't the most highly figured of woods, but the grain is quite nice, and it greatly improves the rifle's level of refinement and overall appearance compared to the bland wood of the standard model. Most people don't immediately recognize it as a 10/22 when they first see it, lol.

Never liked tubular magazines for one reason. Its not so much for the loading sequence. Its pretty much the same for both when loading the magazine. My problem is emptying the magazine. With the Ruger you remove the mag, empty the chamber and your done. You're left with one loose round you can reload in the mag. With the Marlin you can have as many as 17 loose rounds that will probably be put in your pocket until the next loading. Yes you can use some type of speed loader but how convenient are they to carry around compare to a box mag? I own a 1022T and I'm still surprised how reliable it has been with all kinds of ammunition. Its more accurate than I am so what more can you want. With ammo it likes it shoots about an inch to inch and a half at 100 with a 3-9X scope. Thats good enough for me for what I shoot.

I had the trigger modified by a gunsmith etc. Letting the barrel float gave the best results . I watched the video with great interest . My daddy told me it is the group size that counts. However, the 10/22 can be upgraded in every regard, and any significant upgrade (stock, trigger, barrel) will make it significantly more accurate than the Marlin, especially at 50, 75, and 100 yards.

I had a Marlin 60 which I gave to a guy I was friends with that was moving away. It was a decent plinker, no scopes or accessories on it, it was the stainless with a green laminate stock. It was a pretty gun, but I bought it for $125 back in 1988 so I’ve gotten a good bit of fun out of it. My "friend" moved to NYC and we never speak anymore. I hope they are having fun, and I wish them both well. People are weird, but life goes on. I still have two 10/22s and I love them both, and they shoot much better than the Marlin that’s why I was willing to give it away. At the time I had three 22lr rifles. One of the others is the so called Ruger 10/22 tactical model, these come with no sights but a factory secured picatinny rail and a flash suppressor for about $399 these days I bought mine for $200 at a gun show. I added a Primary Arms 22lr ACSS scope on it for $119 and that was the best money I have ever spent for a rimfire scope. IT IS a tack driver. My other is a stainless on black 10/22 take-down model I bought for $359 at another gun show and I added a Vortex Razor red dot for $399. It’s holds minute of squirrel so I’m happy with that, but it’s not as nice/accurate as the other gun. It cost a lot more, and it’s less accurate. I switched to the Primary Arms ACSS 22lr scope but it’s still less accurate. In my mind the damage is done and I don’t have another gun to put that Razor on. I only bought the razor optic because Tim at Military Arms Channel sold me on it when he put it on an AK, and I had extra cash back then. So I ordered it right away from Optics Planet. I really don’t have anything else I can put it on so until I do it’ll sit where it’s sitting. As for the question which of your two rifles are more accurate I’d say your Ruger was. From what I could see your accuracy compared much like mine did between my rifles except for my Ruger tactical model. That thing is an impressive little rifle. Very impressive. At 25 yards on a rest you could fill the dots you drew with little 22 caliber holes.

Well, the Marlin shot above point of aim for all 3, so it could have been just a bit more fine tuning for the scope was needed and it probably would have been putting them in the boxes. I have a 60 and with an old 4X32 Tasco scope on it, I can put the rounds in a box like this. I've even shot eggs off of fence posts at 50 yards with mine...with ease. My Model 60 does like the old Federal Lightning 200 round bulk pack ammo. That seems to be what it really prefers. I haven't used any more modern ammo in it yet to see if anything newer performs as good as the Lightnings did.
But I do agree with some of the other commentors, the 1022 seems to have edged out the 60 and shot slightly better in this one. Either rifle will give you a lifetime of enjoyment.
    Can't decide? Buy both.

I have been asked many times over the years....if I had only one and only one gun, rifle or pistol, what would it be. Answer has always been...10/22. Most versatile and accurate gun out there.

    • @thekatzman6234
      @thekatzman6234 2 роки тому +1

I agree. The difference usually is negligible... I mean... mass produced rifles are kinda like CPU's. You could take 2 sequentially built marlins or 2 10/22 off the same line, and have just as much if not more of a difference in performance between them than a comparison between the better of both pairs. I do however favor the 10/22 for its track record of being able to fire 100k-200k rounds ( with proper maintenance and not overheating the barrel by firing several 30 round clips as fast as you can pull the trigger... ) before needing anything replaced other than possibly a spring...
I even had a buddy bring me a 10/22 to clean that he claimed he put 70k rounds through it and never cleaned it. As you can imagine, it was pretty dirty, but it cleaned up pretty well, I did notice that its firing pin had chipped and only half of it was there, but he never replaced the part and has put another 20k-30k rounds through it since... You pretty much have to try to break the 10/22, and in a pinch you could make functional replacement parts in your garage for it if you really needed to and knew what the part was supposed to look like...

I modified my 10-22 so it does the last round hold-open. Several companies offer the little steel plate (it's inexpensive), or you can easily mod the stock plate like I did.

Looks like the 10/22 won this one. I have a Marlin 60 I got for my 16th birthday in 1971. It has the squirrels on the grip and holds 18 rounds. I put a Weaver 4x scope on it and it was my squirrel gun for many years. I found the CCI Stingers not the most accurate for me. The Winchester Dynapoints is what my gun liked best. The most accurate.22’s I ever shot was a buddy of mines Remington 541S and a Browning T-Bolt. Thanks for the video! 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸

Nice review. I've had both of these and I gotta say each one has plusses and minuses. I like 'em both. Pro tip: put a piece of old carpeting or a cheap welcome mat on the top of your shooting bench. It prevents dropping rounds onto the ground and turning your elbows into taco cheese.

Precisely why the Ruger 1022 is the most popular semi-auto 22 rifle. Three things I noticed the Ruger has over the Marlin. Firstly, accuracy. Secondly, consistency when using different variations of ammo. As you can see, the Ruger didn't have a dramatic POI shift until you started shooting the Stingers. With the Marlin, it had a noticeable impact shift across all three of the different ammo variations. Noticeable inconsistency between ammo variations is what I find most annoying in a 22 rifle. Thirdly, the box magazine containing all the rounds is more rearward compared to the tube magazine going out to the muzzle. Therefore causing the Marlin to be heavier at the muzzle, which is not what I'd want.
You mentioned the other two things. Detachable magazine for faster reloads and the vast aftermarket support. The aftermarket support leads me to mention about the last round bolt hold. If you want this on a Ruger 1022. Brownells sells the parts needed. Power Custom Match bolt and CST Auto Bolt Stop(currently out stock). I have this set up in a Tactical Innovations 1022 reciver and also in a Tactical Solutions 10/22. With my Tactical Solutions 1022, I just modified the proprietary Tactical bolt to work with the CST Auto Bolt Stop. Both work flawless after tweaking the spring on the CST Auto Bolt Stop.

My first rifle that I ever owned by myself was a 1965 Marlin Glenfield Model 60... I own 2 other pre 1970 Model 60s, 2 post 1970 Model 60s and one Marlin Model 795 which is a model 60 with a bottom feed clip instead of the tube feed... I also have one late 60s 10/22, a mid 70s 10/22, an early 90s 10/22, a 2015 10/22, and a 10/22 Charger pistol purchased a couple of months after buying my lat 10/22 rifle... other than my 3 M&P 15-22s, these are the only multiples of the same models that I own in any caliber... Without ANY doubt in MY life experience, out of the box, the Model 60 Marlins were/are more accurate out to 100 yards for sure... and I never started putting scopes on anything until my 50 year old eyes told me it might be a good idea... and I have to mention that not every 10/22 I own likes the same ammo, and the same with the Model 60s.. I never pitted them against each other out past 100 yards because there's no sense in it... Other than very limited after market stocks, doing a trigger job and scoping on the Model 60, there's really not a lot you can do to them.... and everybody knows the endless deal with the 10/22s..... It's funny how Ruger copied (made their own version of) the most popular rimfire ever made and now owns the company that made them... I am a firm believer in those micro grooved barrels...

I’m admittedly biased toward the Ruger. For me, it’s the box mag vs the tube feeding. I feel both are plenty accurate and reliable. There’s no wrong answer in my opinion. Great video.

Informative Post ! Only one thing ----》why the scope ? I would llike, to see what these rifles would do with O.E.M. sights and FIOCCI or ELY Competition Match ammunition. Have you ever reviewed tack-drivers like the KIMBER M82 GOVERNMENT, VALMET M62, H&R M12, WINCHESTER M52D, or the ANSCHUTZ M54.30 ? If you have, a revisit would be appreciated by someone just getting started in competitive .22 shooting. Thank you !

Liked your method overall but 25 Yards? That's not even far enough for a good air rifle comparison.
Those groups would likely pan out differently at 75 to 100 yards

I have two 10/22s, an older model 60 Marlin (pre Remington and Cerberus), and an old High Standard that I've had since I was 14 (a long time ago).
The 10/22s will outshoot the Marlin with anything, and the High Standard will outshoot them both.
I generally choose the 10/22 simply for the ease of loading!

For someone looking to get their first 22. Get the Ruger. You can’t beat the detachable magazine.
With the marlin you have to put your hand by the muzzle to load.
