Jordan's intelligence, his mental toughness, his singlemindedness about winning, his maturity, his realism. In addition to the physical gifts, those are the qualities I think that really, really make him great.
I like at the end how he said "If i Never win a championship I will never look back at my career and say it was incomplete"...That's what I call a True champ!
Bullshit. That's the advantage of the pre-social media era. There was no First Take, no bloggers, and 24/7 sports talk radio was still in its infancy outside a select handful of Eastern Conference cities. No way in hell you'll catch a player of superstar caliber saying that today.
Ashish Patel - He said Tarshished not Incomplete. Different emotion. He would feel Incomplete but his legacy would be among the greats, just not the greatest
Michael jordan speaks and its inspiring. There will never be another person that genuine. Kobe was like watching his little brother, I will say. It's not the same watching players today that have attitudes and control narratives worried about their branding making money their legacy before they have a legacy. Michael loved basketball and focused on that love for the game and everything else followed.
This shows you how humble this dude is and all the great ones even outside of sports didn’t want the fame didn’t want the spotlight but that’s why they deserve it because they answered their personal calling an become legendary,,this is what takes away from a guy like Lebron because he doesn’t have that” thing” that makes you a timeless worldwide legend!
Riley was able to take 3 different type of teams and make them winners. Knicks were terrible when he got there and Miami was an expansion team with little success. Most importantly, he was able to change his coaching style to fit his team. Going from fastbreaking and exciting play to slow it down, foul like crazy is a lot more difficult than just throwing in a triple-post offense when you have the most dominant player in the game (Shaq, MJ).
@@grankfarrett3900 ..well, u cant really blame him on that one, beasley was tha hard n college -- besides d.rose, was clearly tha bes' player comin out that year

such a humble guy. He says he's just like you and I, goes to the bathroom ,eats etc. Players today can learn a lot from MJ off the court and on the court.
Jordan's said "little dirty" that's an understatement if I ever heard one. They use to pummel him every time he drove to the basket. Everyone of those fouls would be a flagrant two in today's league. Not to mention the physical play that were not considered fouls back then.
What class, integrity, and presence from both MJ and Pat Riley. Jordan summed up his perspective on winning and not winning. Wanting to win with his teammates and did not want such a spotlight because it was unjust/unfair from the ramifications of making mistakes. At this time he was already considered the greatest of all-time, now after winning 6 championships in 8 years. Encapsulates this interview as foreshadowing of what success means to MJ. It was always about winning with his teammates and respecting the opportunity of giving it your best all the time. The true sign of a champion even though in 1990-91 he was not a champion yet.
I hated him for beating Magic and The Lakers in the Finals. I held on to that feeling throughout the whole 90's. And despite how felt about him and the Bulls. I recognized that Jordan was the best Basketball Player that had ever played the game. And I still feel that way.
So in 1991, MJ wins the MVP and brings his teammates to center-court to accept it - has them on the "Going to Disneyworld commercial", says Scottie Pippen was invaluable throughout the 90s, and 2021 Scottie Pippen starts to say MJ never cared about the team and Phil was racist? Got it.
Humble, and about to win 6 chips in the next 8 years. kind of amazing. At this time he was so respected and accomplished, then he took up 10 fold with more accomplishments. GOAT.
MJ the most clutch, killer of dreams, and the stone cold GOAT. Only player closet we will ever see to this guy is Kobe! He is the only reason I ever learned how to play basketball miss those days!
***** Lebron has a lot of respect for his teammates, MJ used to talk trash and blame his teammates a lot when things where going bad. Not saying he had no respect for them though.
***** Stop talking shit. Never Jordan blame his teammates where things were going bad publicly the way Lebron did. Actually, this attitude is something Kobe started and Lebron followed. It is something that we see in the modern y2k nba era. And Lebron does more than blaming them. He left them twice. Once to go to Miami and the second time to go back to the Cavs because he thinks Wade is done. Stop mentioning Lebron's name with Jordan in the same sentence.
agni kemi Jordan never blamed his teammates??? Really??? What about this MJ quote ''They've got no idea what it's all about. The white guys, they work hard, but they don't have the talent. And the rest of them? Who knows what to expect? They're not good for much of anything.'' Or this: "We're beating a lot of poor teams. So what? We won a lot of games last year, too. Will Horace and Bill still be playing at this level in the playoffs...Can Pip keep it up?" Maybe this??: "I hate being out there with those garbagemen. They don't get you the ball." This??: "He can't do anything with the ball. Don't give it to him." - Michael yelling at Paxson who passed the ball to Perdue And so much more, see Lebron always blames himself, even when he has a triple double, and that's the difference.
Similar to the NHL having the #99 retired across the league because of Gretzky. The best way I can describe Jordan is to say he's like the "Wayne Gretzky of basketball." Meaning, we can debate and argue and talk all day about who is the greatest, but there's Gretzky and then there's everybody else. There's Jordan and then there's everybody else. (Even though Gretzky was more dominant in hockey than Jordan was in basketball, this is the best sort of comparison my mind can come up with.)
Very interesting to hear MJ say his career wouldn't be tarnished if he never won a championship. He changed people's mindsets when it came to winning championships. It changed from wanting to win one, to wanting to win many. Players didn't react that way to the 60's Celtics dynasty because it was team domination. The Boston Celtics owned the NBA, not one single player. Russell was certainly the catalyst but he wasn't the world superstar MJ became in the 90's. MJ continues to influence the game.
I can sense Pat wanting to get something out from Mj, i mean hell yeah, these two are just great together on the court! Mj gave nightmares to Pat!!haha anyways, thanks for uploading this! Never thought these two got into an interview!
Wow I was taken aback by Jordan saying he rather have faced Portland than the Lakers. I understand the logic in his argument but I was shocked by him saying that. You would think he would've said I don't care who I face.
I remember this interview. I was stunned that MJ chose Portland in is answer @2:25. One year later, Jordan would have given a different answer. He truly believed in his teammates by then.
It’s interesting, he was right in a lot of ways. In game 1 of the finals his teammates were mentally intimidated by the big stage and they lost the game because if it. MJ had to really focus on getting his teammates to step up and get into the game in that series, which led him to averaging over 11 assists per game. MJ also was affected by being in on that big stage for the first time, but his reaction wasn’t to shrink, he reacted by bringing a heightened level of focus and precision to the court during his performances.
You ever wonder why Jordan thanked Pat Riley more than he thanked Phil? Pat knew more about Jordan trying to beat him than Phil knew about his own player. Phil was a good coach, but he never won a title or competed for one unless his team was stacked. Riley always had his teams over perform.
Most greats are loved and supported by people when theyve won nothing. The genius of Michael and his "team", is that even after he won it all multiple times, even amidst all the scandals and imperfection, even if its for everyone to see that he does not have a "generous" or "kind" personality, people still loved and gravitated towards him. Its partly because of how the media shielded him, but mostly its because of his passion, charisma, dedication, and of course the love for the game.
Wow, just found out that Pat Riley won a NBA championship as a player, then 5 years later became coach of the lakers and won 5 champoinships that way too! :S
Wow, this dude was ripped in his first olympics (1984). I think he took physical preparation a lot more serious than his comtemporaries. I mean, granted he had better hang time than anyone in the league but look at those shoulds at about 7:20. One of the few players today who strikes me with that ridiculous upper body leaness and muscle ration is Rajon Rondo whose delts are looking crazy these days.
Riley was competing for titles with John Starks as his best guard in New York. He put together teams in Miami which took the Bulls to the brink as well despite the huge talent gap. Phil won with the best player to ever play along side a hall of famer and good pieces (which became all star pieces when they started adding pieces like Rodman). Pat's assistant coaches and players are now head coaches at Miami, Boston, Chicago, Orlando (well until this year), and many others. True greatness.
What?! Riley went up against the Jordan Bulls twice with Miami. One was a first round sweep, the second was 5 games. What brink? Come back when you get a clue
Salute to Pat Riley for retiring the #23 on the Miami Heat. Michael Jordan didn’t play a single second for the Miami Heat, but the franchise retired his No. 23 jersey in April of 2003 as a sign of respect to him and his achievements. This is the story of how and why that happened. “In honor of your greatness and for all you’ve done for the game of basketball - and not just the NBA, but for all the fans around the world - we want to honor you tonight and hang your jersey, No. 23, from the rafters,” Heat President Pat Riley said. “No one will ever wear No. 23 for the Miami Heat. You’re the best.” And that's why the Lebron never got the chance to wear #23. Pat Riley is a REAL ONE. Riley also told Lebron, to get out of his office when Lebron tried to get the then current Miami Heat coach fired.
With all due respect, it was never my intent to debate anything and all I was just saying was Chicago had key contributors taking nothing away from Jordan's who I made CRYSTAL CLEAR I hated defending, but to your well understood point, his supporting cast was FAR BELOW that of other championship winning teams making solidifying MJ's status...as much as I HATE TO ADMIT...the greatest of all time.
