- How CHEAPLY can you eat in Vietnam? Pretty darn cheap, yet still delicious. This video was a chance to do something fun with my friend Allie. We wanted to see how cheaply we could eat for a day! So that being said, lets get started.
First place was closed, ha! So we headed for a dish I have been wanting to try but haven't had the chance to eat, that is Com Chay. A rice dish that is cooked twice over a hot flame and in a wok to “crisp” it up. This cooking method gives you a rice cracker like product that is perfect for dipping in all that nuoc mam sweet sauce. Oh and all the pork fat that is in there too.
Next, we headed up to Phu Nhuan to eat some cheap banh mi because you cannot have a cheap day of eating without some banh mi. This time a little different as we went for a Banh Mi, that was stuffed with Korean flavors! Still flavor packed and a nice way to mix up the taste buds on this cheap eats day.
Of course, one dish that is harder to find in the south, Banh duc. A rice flour product made by an Auntie deep in some homie neighborhoods. This wet version is one of the best I have ever had. Loaded with fried shallots, pork, mushroom, mung bean, and more are thrown into this bowl. A cheap meal to help hard working people stay full and keep on working.
Lastly, a dish I am still not sure if I love or hate. Khoai Mi, with coconut, scallion oil, corn, peanuts, and sugar. Strange forsure. Apparently it is loved as people were extremely excited to eat it.

I do think that with your down to earth attitude , adapt and understanding other culture and respect them . Peoples will love you where ever you go. Take care , Love and respect from my family.
Great to hear! Happy to hear you all found the channel!
Loved your comment on the crunch. We call out the "New Orleans crunch". It's how we know the bread is made right and fresh. Love po-boys and banh mi in New Orleans. I enjoy your videos very much Max. Love Vietnamese food. You give me ideas for my Vietnamese food here in Southern Louisiana.
I like all your videos, but I especially love this one. Absolutely amazing what you can get for a $1- 1.50 in HCM. You’re making me miss the street food so bad!!!!!
Thank you DJ!
Allie English is excellent w cute smile. I love simple food like this especially hole in the wall place
Max, just discovered your channel, I really appreciate your appreciation for the Vietnamese culture. I see big things coming for you. Guaranteed!
Bánh Mì with Cà phê sữa đá, that's perfect meal!
I like this girl, great collaboration and chemistry. She speaks great English too for a local girl. Maybe do a $100 day next time to treat yourself and her a little.
I am sure she is not a local girl , but a Viêt Kiêu from the US or Canada , from her accent
@@hungcuongnguyen293 it's not uncommon for local youths to speak fluent English nowadays lol
@@hungcuongnguyen293 She is local girl, not everyone cannot speak English like you
that's right. so interesting
she's a local, i went to school with her 10 years ago
Hey man! It’s good to see someone finally enjoying normal street food from random everyday vendors in Vietnam! I’m sure the people are just as grateful for the exposure, great work 🇻🇳😁
Thanks!! Happy to be able to do it!
Max~you should be so proud of yourself. Your shows are one of a few shows on my favorite list. I just don't like everyone shows, only a few that I have selected. Your shows are one of them. Fantastic job, Max!
I live in Hawaii. I been watching so many of his videos that I started to crave Vietnamese food.
So for dinner, I ordered Vietnamese take out. This is what I ordered and how much it cost.
2 orders of pho.
1 order of spring rolls , 3 pieces.
1 order of bbq pork plate with vermicelli noodles.
3 bahn mi sandwiches.
Order total? $80.00 US
That could probably feed a Vietnamese family for a week.
Review thực sự có tâm..lúc nào cũng ăn hết..k bỏ phí..nice
That Bánh đúc is a thicker version of Cháo Sườn (rice flour porridge). The northern Bánh đúc version is a condensed rice cake mixed with peanut you can hold it in your hand and dip in shrimp paste sauce, but Cháo Sườn and northern Bánh đúc are dying arts among so many classic dishes. Maybe some still could be found in the outskirt or small towns. The last dish is another form of bánh tằm bì
Hồi chiều đi ngang qua Hồ Thị Kỉ có gặp anh này 👍
Dude her English is so smooth and natural. She's like the cool girl in school that knows everyone
Cơm cháy, lít. burned rice, is sometimes translated as scorched rice.
Overcooked rice may refer to cháo or congee.
That banh mi looks perfectly combined. I wish I was there. Enjoy your time Max. 🇻🇳❤️
That pork and kimchi Banh Mi looked fantastic Max! The rice crepe/pancake was very infesting.
100,000 dongs! Saigon has tbe best bun me sandwich!
It should be pronouced "bank me" not "bun me" 🤣
@@congvl966 Thank you for the correction. Can't wait to eat bank me again in hanoi and in saigon.
@@congvl966 Judging is the most problem in this world
Công Vũ Lê you’re Vietnamese and cant even pronounce it right?:) it’s Band not bank. There’s no K sound
@@huonedwards4917 haha. "Banh my" is correct 👌
The first meal so delicious, every year i go back VN, always have it................Can't wait COVID overrrrrrrrr

thank you Max McFarlin for the video. you have helped many people around the world to know more about our country in the most practical way. Thank you.
Max you and Ali need to go eat every so often. You work well together.
Could you (and Ali?)go to a French restaurant ? I would love to see your opinions. Thanks! Keep up the good work!
Why doesn't UA-cam have a smiley button haha? Your face when you ate the last dish, it's so fun.
so cute eating with Allie and she is nice though!!
Everything looked great especially the banh duc! Allie is fun!
she is awesome!
Allie was great, you should invite her along again. Everything looked so great and the food always looks so inviting 🍜🍚
Love ❤️ this episode! Ally was awesome too!
Com chay is similar to the typical Jakarta food "kerak telor", only if the "kerak telor" cooked rice is added with egg, grated coconut and ebi shrimp.
Banh mi for Max should be the "extra extra spicy" one. 😄😆
The Bahn duc dough may be similar to the "bubur sumsum" in the "jenang" you have eaten in Jogjakarta, only if the "jenang" is eaten with brown sugar (the sweet version). 😁 In Indonesia there is also something similar to Khoai mi, the name is "getuk lindri" except that the topping is only grated coconut, there are not many choices of toppings like khoai mi..
Good job Max finding cheap and tasty food 👍👍👍
I’m sure I’ll love this video so it gets a instant thumbs up and comment👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks as always brother!
Woo hoo another video 👍. Allie is so cool. Love her personality. Everything looks great. But I am not sure about the last dish "Khoai mi xay". I never had it before. But it makes me think of mashed potatoes so much. And I can't help but feel quite confused about the taste along with you and Allie. The way you and Allie' s facial expressions and description is priceless. Hahaha 😁
Tell Allie I love her hair. She looks so much like my niece, but with curly hair.
I dig Allie's classic ole skool Nike's... I remember that style in the late 70's 🤩
The banh duc looks amazing. I have never seen it like that . Wow. In the alley. lol 👏👏🤗. Thanks Max and Saigonese . Hahahha
Nhờ xem kênh của MAX và đi ăn thử. mà biết thêm rất nhiều nơi bán đồ ăn ngon , giá bình dân . Thank you MAX . 👍👍👍👍👍

Cheap & Cheerful! Nice to see a new eating companion with you, Max. I wonder who is next on your guest list?😅 It's also lovely to see chivalry is still alive.

So true!
Healthy “ish”, spicy 🌶 and that crunch. Works for me. 👍 Vietnamese food is so delicious. 😋
Nice, man! The com chay looked really interesting and fatty, and the banh mi looked heavenly! Yo...and can we talk about that transition at 10:16? So cool! Oh, and the wet banh duc also looks really tasty. Hahaha I loved watching you two try to figure out if you liked the khoai mi or not. So funny...it definitely looks interesting, for sure!
Cơm Cháy = Rice Crust

Max's initiative Khoai Mì taste would be enhanced with a spoonful crunchy fried onion
The sauce with the first dish is one of the best things in Vietnam
Yeah, It's the best for boiled / steamed veg.
I'm so proud of my bestie. Alli, I love you. Great video, Max!

Max: I stan you. Your vlog has no extra, and it hits different. I high key like it. 😍

So chill with banh mi and caphe sua da in Saigon see life qass by I don't need any thing more than this
Cơm cháy là phải lấy từ đáy nồi cơm ra và được đun bằng bếp củi thì mới tuyệt vời .
Max you always find great co host and great food.
anh đúng là youtube review món ăn ổn nhất em biết :v
I have been all over the countries in Asia and Southeast Asia and teasted all the popular foods and street foods but, none of them can even compare to Vietnamese street foods and Vietnamese cusine, deserts, fruits and junk foods. They are incredible foods and cheap too. Try Vietnamese fresh sugar drink (nuoc mia)
I love your videos. It takes me back to my childhood. You are my reprieve from hectic days at work, and your my daily lunch date. Lol. Kudos to you!!!
Awesome video! Thank you Max!!
When im school to home, always see "khoai mi xay" here and actually doesn't feel what smell it's

Such a wonderful host who speaks and articulates so well.
Gimme a couple more years, I’m coming with Max to eat for a full week! 😍
Hello Max and Allie, great street tour and searching for great food. The first one is closed! Now the search continues. Busy road make the searching fun. Success, good food to eat.
I like Allie, she's good and cute
Max, you need to do a collaboration with Mark Wiens and Sonny from the Best Ever Food Review
Perhaps you have to stay in Vietnam for 10 years to enjoy all the dishes of this country...
haha so true
The last dish I had it when I was a kid back home maybe 30 something or 40 years ago. He twisted the dish a little bit, back then it just had mixture of crashed peanut, sugar and salt and shredded coconut meat.
100k ở VN ăn được cả 3 bữa và uống coffee luôn nhé!
Vietnamese food always fantasic !
Max với chị Allie phối hợp ăn ý ghê!
Oh man, if u never had banh duc before, it’ll look good and tasty for u. But if you had banh duc before, and saw this bowl of banh duc (especially the last scoop Max shows at 14:51) u will crave for it, I mean CRAVE for it. This is so good.
yessir!!!! You know brother! haha
What a lovely collab keep them coming

I love banh đúc. Super yummy
Ăn sáng với 100 nghìn như một ước mơ vậy =)) mỗi ngày đều ăn cái bánh mì 15 nghìm là ngon lắm rồi =))

Max, baller on a budget!
Love Max’s video from Hannah ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Even though I havent tried, that Banh duc looks so good!! That looks like the best out of the meals in this video 🤩 Good spots 👏
It's so delicious, man.
yumm Max delish segment and your background music is on point love
saigon is the most expensive city already, I guarantee you will get the same things with half or even 1/3 the price in Da Nang. For example you will get a banh mi with the length of triple the one you had in this video with full of meat for 10k vnd
I love ❤️ bánh mì thịt - so delicious and yummy- I am hungry 😋!!!!
Sorry Max I have to go with Allie's 3 dishes, I love cassava as a sweet but Khoai Mi just look too much like a fusion confusion to me. People say don't judge a book by its cover, well this ain't it.
amazing video! enjoy all the foods Max! ;)
The banh mi with kimchi and banh duc looks interesting. 😀
Oh, Max, check this out. I happened upon a channel yesterday when I was trying to find a good Vietnamese yogurt recipe and stumbled across youtuber Farmer MeeMaw with a deep southern accent. I made a comment about checking your channel out since you also have a deep southern accent and that you're doing food vlogs in Saigon. She took a look see and told me you guys have a mutual friend in common! :)
