I would definitely not be watching a horror game if it weren't for your commentary, but at that remove this is kind of entertaining. My only hypothesis about what's going on is that, with the amount of "semi-organic" this and "biological" that, and beating hearts and so forth, there will at some point be what Ursula Vernon has described as a Horrible Meat Level -- like Mass Effect 2's Collector Ship mission or whatnot, where you're walking through guts that are breathing around you. (Maybe the entire Zone is a connected living being, incorporating all the hearts and slime-spewers and so forth? Not sure I'd hang my hat on that one. If it is, though, whoever Cappy is / connects to is probably its origin or consciousness.)
I'm honestly getting that vibe too tbh. I've been avoiding spoilers so I don't know what the like, mid-zone or deep zone are going to be like, but with how a lot of things in the Zone seem to behave I would not be surprised to encounter the Horrible Meat Level at some point. And I've been waffling on whether I think the Zone is analogous to a connected living being -- if it is, I think it's probably more like Pando, Armillaria solidipes, or Posidonia australis. So, something that has feelers all throughout the Zone and responds to disturbances with anomalies or instability storms (and giant clone organisms are the best way I can describe it). I'm not sold on it, but it's one of the theories I'm entertaining. I had a theory at some point before going into Ep 4 (tomorrow's) about the possibility that Oppy, Tobias, and Francis are some type of anomaly themselves, or even that Remnant Ghost that I'd seen on the map legend, but I've kind of abandoned it based on new information lol.

I'm not a hundred percent convinced she's alive -- she seems like exactly the sort of person to just ignore being dead for SCIENCE reasons -- but she definitely doesn't seem like a manifestation of the Zone
