  • Welcome to Narrative Wargamer! We are a narrative play focussed Warhammer 40,000 channel, and as such we like to do things a little differently here! So what is narrative play exactly? How is it different from the 40k you know, and how can you give it a try yourself? In this video Tony gives a run down of what narrative play means to us here on Narrative Wargamer.
If you're interested in giving Warhammer 40,000 narrative play a go yourself you can do so by attending one of our Crucible of War event days right here in the UK!
Next event details are available here: www.tabletopevents.co.uk/tick...

Good to see you have branched out, I found your podcast and suddenly realised GW was issuing a ton of material in books that was being almost completely ignored by the majority of content creators. Apparently GW do not mind because competitive is the "be all and end all". So I am looking forward to what is to come and see at CoW 2.

Yeah it's a real shame there isn't more coverage for narrative play content from GW, but we hope to change that! Can't wait to see everyone at CoW 2!

I’ve got to say, and sorry if I ramble. I just recently found your podcast as I was looking for something that wasn’t filled with just lore talk, or competitive play about a month ago. I’m proud to say I did, and that my Spotify says one of the first to rate you guys a 5 star. I’ve always enjoyed narrative. I started playing 40K around the tail end of 6th edition (February/March 2014) even though I had played the DoW games when I was much younger. I got into guard as Winter Assualt was my favorite DoW game. The first time I played at my local area FLGS was a squad vs squad city fight that the veterans of the group did to teach me the rules. I played against 10 necron flayed ones and lost. My guardsmen torn to shreds except the Sgt. I ended up naming him Midas, after the Greek myth. Always surviving battles and somehow doing something incredible like killing a chaos termy sgt in combat but losing his squad every time. I built a background and a narrative. And the squad stayed with me until the beginning of 8th. Sadly I lost them, sometime around then a relative of mine had destroyed my stuff, burned it and left me with nothing. I had to rebuild my life, and start anew away from some toxic parts of my family. I quit the hobby and forgot about it until Covid and the pandemic hit. I was classified as an essential worker here in the states, and during my long shifts I noticed GW dropped 9th ed. After I watched the trailer. I bought some more guard, and slowly but surely I made plans when I got more free time I would start my army again. Now 2 years later. I’ve finally got some more free time. And I’ve been able to slowly whittle down my pile of shame. While also helping my friend/coworker start a Tau force. Now with new codex in hand my Cadians will soon be standing tall. I have goals to start a campaign soon, and eventually I would love to come to England to play at a Crucible of War in the future. I also know this comment will probably get buried, but keep producing the great narrative content y’all.

I’m sorry to hear you’ve had some difficult times in the past, but I’m glad to know the hobby has remained a source of positivity for you. It’s truly heart warming to hear you’ve found the channel and enjoyed our content so much, and thank you for the kind words and 5 stars!
I hope the guard project comes together quickly for you and it sounds to me like you need a tank named after that legendary sgt, ‘The Hand of Midas’ sounds like a great name for a tank ace!

@@narrativewargamer3652 You know I just might name my Baneblade or TC that. I really never thought I would get a reply either, but y’all are great. It took me a month of binging to get up to the newer released episodes. But I enjoyed every minute spent. What you, Dave , both Dans, and the other guests/co-hosts of the show have done for the hobby is more monumental in my eyes than some of the big names in tabletop. My only wish is sometime in the near future you guys go on a deep dive on the Cities of Death stuff. I found a copy of Urban Conquest not too long ago with plans to do a city fight campaign. I feel like the missions in there would be great discussion points even though it’s 8th edition stuff.

That is some high praise indeed! Thanks for binging the podcast and it's great to hear you have enjoyed it so much. I'd love to do a deep dive into Cities of Death again at some point, the Urban Conquest set was one release that sadly eluded me as I wasn't able to get a copy at the time, and I've always wanted one! The campaign system and missions looked great, I hope you have fun playing them.

thank you so much for this.. getting back into 40k after a long time away (started in Rogue trader) and was worried from all that I heard about the scene, that telling storys in a narrative way seemed never to be a thing anymore. This has given me real hope! now i have a whole backlog of videos and podcasts to listen too

Welcome back to the hobby! Telling stories and playing cinematic games is what we are all about. I hope you enjoy the backlog of our content, and I recommend checking out the Crusade system once you are familiar with the modern version of the game.

I like this idea. I've just gotten back into 40k as Aeldari and watching battle reports what comes across is that many units are being sacrificed to gain points, and this doesn't strike me as something the Eldar would do considering the consequences of dying.
I am also keen to see if there are rules sets that allow for taking captives rather than arbitrarily eliminating enemy units. I bet lore could give some interesting slants on the wildly varying values of hostages to each faction. I bet a captive character could be worth loads. But I suspect Orks wouldn't be interesting in paying a ransom for their captive war boss.

    • @narrativewargamer3652
      @narrativewargamer3652  8 місяців тому +2

If you are playing a campaign or a Crusade with a friend using a roster of units available between games you could roll for captives after each game and have them unavailble in future games untill rescued.
Lore wish lots of factions have their reasons for taking foes alive: Drukhari - captives, Imperium - interigation, T'au - political power, Orks - food/fun, Chaos - ritual victims, Necrons - experimentation, etc

    Congratulations!
A bit of technical feedback, maybe try to put the overall gain of the audio a bit higher, sometimes it sounds a bit low.
Also try to stop Avoiding to look at the camera! i know one can feel awkward at first but if you look at the camera directly the video can feel more engaging for the viewer.
Another might be to make it a bit more scripted and edit acordingly, in some points it felt a bit too ramble-ish.
Of course , these tips work for conversational videos. I'm eager to see what kind of other content you upload!
    100/100 recommending to my friends!

I know, cameras are always hard. Specially for people us used to do other things or work behind them. Still, it can be overcome with a bit of practice. Maybe try looking for tips on how to act for theatre, how to talk as a tv host or how give public speech, those things are always useful!
