C919 Is a Joke! It Was Endured a Halt to Operations a Mere One Month Later

  • China's homegrown C919 airliner, having commenced its maiden commercial flight on May 28th, endured a halt to operations a mere one month later.
On the morning of June 29th, C919 was set to operate MU9187, jetting off from Shanghai to Chengdu, with a scheduled return flight at 12:30 in the afternoon. However, with the aircraft still grounded as late as 2:16 PM, China Eastern Airlines had no choice but to deploy the Airbus A320 as a stand-in. Intriguingly, the C919 did manage to return to Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport that evening, albeit without passengers.

The C919 is subjected to the same requirements as any other international plane and should be perfectly fine, especially when crucial parts are produced by Western companies. The start of the Boeing Dreamliner was way worse with many more malfunctions.

Everybody missed the point: C919 is NOT a plane, but a financial tool. So far 99% of the orders came from China's Financial companies NOT airlines! China Southern Airline didn't place any orders, China Eastern placed 5, Air China 5. BUT ICBC Financial ordered 100 planes!!! CCB Financial Ordered 50 Planes, CITC financial 18, Industrial Bank 20, ABC financial 65, China Huarong Financial 30 etc. The list goes on people should Wiki it. What's going on? Does China's financial institutions have pilots? Do they have any routes? Here is the TRUTH: Financial companies put 10% down and use the planes as collateral to borrow full amount from the bank at 2% interest (e.g. ABC Financial placed an order of 10B RMB with just 10% down. it then borrows 9B RMB from the bank using the planes as collateral); They then lend the money to the Real Estate builders at 13 ~ 15% interest because banks in China are no longer lending money to the builders since the risk is too high. If the real estate companies go under, these financial companies can dump these useless planes to the banks, That's all there is.

@@JB-yb4wn That's totally ridiculous! C919 is a commercial plane; not Gulf Stream business jet. Leasing companies would buy business jets to lease to business, but why would it buy a None Proven commercial plane to lease to the airlines? China's airlines are mostly government owned, they have enough financial power to buy or lease directly from the manufacturer. If one C919 has a fatal accident, financial companies are on the hook for toxic assets instead of airlines. Does it make any business sense for them to do so? For 3 consecutive years China's airline industry didn't make any money. Why would any leasing company buy so many planes to lease to an industry that doesn't make any profit in the mid of the worst recession?

Because, John, you have zero clue how the industry works:
      How do airlines lease aircraft?
Usually, airlines enter into a sale and lease-back agreement with the lessors allowing them to acquire aircraft and sell it to a lessor - ideally at a profit - and then lease it back for its own use.
      Google more, pontificate less.

Comac C919 project inception 2008, first flight 2017 (9 years), first delivery (one of the prototypes) in service 2023 (7 years after first flight). Engines and avionics systems imported. 15 years to get one aircraft into service.

There’s a learning curve for every dept involved in the the operation and mx, even w/ training. The scary part is, they are trying to copy components w/ out understanding the whole unit, down to the materials and process used to produce it.
Boeing had a whole slew of problems launching the 787. The A220 has had many operational difficulties also. It just the nature of the beast. Problem is, this is China, and they don’t want to even slow down to understand how it works, or teach the people involved in systems and operations.

This is most likely an engine-related problem. In flight compressed air is brought into the cabin through an air filtration system to keep pressure at an altitude of about 5,000 to 7,000 Feet ASL. (It depends a bit on the altitude at takeoff and landing.) China has a limited amount of experience in building high-performance aircraft engines. In fact, much of the aerospace technology in use has been "stolen" from foreign countries. (If you take offense at the word stolen, stop reading now, you'll miss the point.) Almost all modern aircraft engines are built by just three companies, and most engines are leased and maintained by those companies. China has not been able to obtain enough knowledge of these engines to copy them. If you are skeptical, ask yourself why Chinese aircraft, rockets, missiles, and other aerospace technology look so much like Western versions which clearly existed first.

It's hard to say whether this was a minor problem, or a major one. It could have been a simple low-tech issue, like a stuck interior pressure gauge, or a stuck air outflow valve, or pilot error, to even a major problem with the air packs, ducts, or cabin sealing. One cannot draw any conclusions as to the true reliability of this aircraft from one such incident.

Imagine, within 3 years India will have a far better engine than China because of the new agreement for GE to share 414 technology.
China continues to be kneecapped by its belligerent foreign policy which makes all Western nations reject any basic and advanced technology sharing with China. The EV car problems described in this video are the obvious result of lack of robotics and automation during manufacture.
Additionally, there are similarities between China's problems manufacturing fanjet engines and semiconductors. Both require strong R&D and knowledge of numerous technologies combined to produce highly complex things. When China claims some breakthrough, usually the rest of the world shrugs because not one but likely hundreds of such breakthroughs would be required for China to advance a single step. Also, today civilian aviation safety record is built on the lives of thousands of passengers who have died over the past 100 years. By not participating and complying with modern commercial aviation operations, China is reinventing the wheel and may have to experience its own similar death toll to achieve similar levels of operational safety while the rest of the world continues to advance even further. China will always be in catch up mode unless it can make a deal similar to what India just got from the United States.
It's not surprising to hear the C-919 may be paused and suspend operations from time to time.
Perhaps more surprising is if China thinks that it's going to make fast progress with the WS-15 for the J-20 by sacrificing a large number of lives. China is very, very far behind in military fanjet engine technology, at minimum about 15 years just on performance alone. But that doesn't even touch the possible issues of reliability, lexpected lifetime before replacement or major maintenance, or even regular maintenance. The US for example is already using 2nd generation single crystal turbine blades while China hasn't even implemented advanced materials for fan blades at all.
China is probably dreaming when it comes to being ready to be ready to reunify Taiwan by force by 2027. By the end of the first week of operations, the vast majority of Chinese military fighter aircraft will be grounded due to maintenance issues and any surviving Taiwanese F-16 will be ruling the skies even if the F-16 technology and versions are 30 years old (which might be replaced by latest versions starting in 2024).
And, fanjet engine technology may affect more than civilian and military aircraft. It's also likely that technologies translate to gas turbine powered ships as well. Even China's rather deep experience with electric propulsion is dependent on how electricity is generated. So far, it seems that China's nuclear power plant technology is ineadequate or it would have been installed in the Type 003 Fudian aircraft carrier. Unless you want to consider mid-20th century steam turbines and burning low grade bilge oil, the main option is a gas turbine engine using technology similar to the WS-15 whcih China apparently doesn't do well yet.

A total of 108 COMAC ARJ21 (advanced regional jet) have been delivered since 2015. Up till March 618, 2023, ARJ21 has been flown for more than 200000 hours, accumulating more than 110000 take-offs and landings and carrying more than 6.25 million travelers to their destinations. A total of 329 flights have been established between 119 cities in China, and no fatal accidents have been reported for the airplane. For COMAC C919, I suggest that everybody needs to be patient to wait for the airplane to fly for some years before the final verdict is given.

Dropping from 10,000meters down to 7,000meters may not seem like much, until you talk to a mountaineer. They call 8,000+ meters the "Death Zone" because that is the point that air pressure is to low for your body to get enough oxygen to replace what it's using. So, sounds like a pressurization problem to me.

Couple of years ago when I first saw Chinese-made or Korean-made vehicles I thought I would never want to be seen in one of them. Today these same brands are very much in the league with decades-old western and Japanese brands. Give the Chinese time, you will see what they can achieve. No doubt about... Building excellent flying machines is no small matter. Even established western manufacturers do flounder...
