So great to see improvements on Firefly guitars since I last got to play one! Guitar info/link: guitarsgarden.com/collections/fflp-electric-guitars Enjoy :)
Are the $11,000 MAGA Les Pauls that Gibson sent Trump a cease and desist for, made with the same parts as Firefly guitars? All I can find is that they are made in Japan with Chinese parts. The ironic bastardization of "ultimate patriotism" is hilarious.
Stainless Steel frets won't smooth out with Ni-coated strings, but polishing frets is worth it at this price. The guitar sounds very mellow. I might replace the bridge with an Alumnum alloy one for better chime. Philadelphia Luthiers has a model that should fit.
Recently i bought a Chibson Les Paul Custom at Ali Express, the wood manufacturing and finish was very good, but not the cheap hardware. So i swapped all the electrics (with Probuckers 👍🏻), the bridge and stop tail to Epiphone parts except for Gotoh tuners. All in all i paid 380 € for a nice LP with the right headstock and a double binding. Weight is 4,1 kg like a good LP should. Sounds like a good Epiphone. I'm happy with my Chibson. 😊
I purchased 2 Les Pauls from Firely - the ONE thing everybody reviewing these Les Pauls seems to miss and forget to point out is that they have a "FAT" baseball bat shaped neck. I was quite disappointed to be honest and wish they (including Darrel) would have mentioned it. I say this because it's not just a tiny bit or negligibly fat. For the rest these Firefly LPs are amazing. Replacing Pickups doesn't cost much these days - you can get awsome Donils pickups for about 40 $ these days (if you need to metal shred that is). However, the FAT neck is a show stopper and I am selling mine off asap - damn....
@DarrelBraunGuitar your critique us fair. The non sheilded area is a concern. Ive had several Gibsons and still have my 1st Gibson from the late 80's. That one and the other Gibsons I have owned never had shielding. Pretty common in my opinion.
How about potting these PUs and see what the difference is? I have one of the very early Firefly LP goldtop, bolt on models and even though I had to do some "work" on it, I still really like it and it's a nice playing, heavy guitar. I had to remove the fretboard and level the neck, install a new trussrod, and then I said WTF, I'll just swap the PUs, coil split the neck PU and put some SS frets in it. Now it has the absolutely sweetest tone on the neck when it's split. It's like an old Strat hiding in a goldtop. I only paid $99 for it so just tinkering for the fun of it, but even for their early, crude builds, there IS something there to appreciate.
$220 USD i would imagine..... Like you said - heck of a deal if you clean up the frets, throw some decent pickups and have the wiring checked then paint some grounding into the cavities/back of the covers.
Gibson built a very valuable name for themselves. Good for them. That’s why they charge the prices they do. But if you think of the “cost” to mass produce a guitar….. I don’t blame people buying LP copies and going with brands like Firefly. Those guitars and properly set up and sound great for what they are. If you change a few things they will “sound and play” on the same level as the Big Names..
Why didn’t you mention the US style Nashville bridge, the tuners, & the caps? They look like paper & oil caps. It doesn’t look like that guitar needs any upgrades at all. Looks awesome
Thanks, and great video Darrell. Picked up a FF Strat in Jan of 24, outstanding, had S/S frets but were smooth/no grit. Pickups were average, had a better set for upgrade, and honestly as good/better as a $1300 Sc;hecter. I've played for over 50yrs and have owned every major brand out there, and the FF guitars are the best budget guitar on the market. That strat, pickup of a set of used gibson ($150 or less), and you're good to go (of course shield it).
Great guitars I have 6 of them. Also, a quick note...my Les Paul Standard ($2500.00) has NO Shielding on it what so ever. To be honest, I cannot find much difference in the build quality between my FireFly and my Les Paul Standard. The only big difference is the pups. However, I can get great new pups for under $300.00. IMO, and anyway you look at this, the FireFly guitars are more than a great value at just under $200.00. Just my 2 cents worth. Peace.
I've got four of them, two are Elite SPs. They're gorgeous and plays so good and sounds awesome as well! My favorite one is the ash topped, maple fretboard SP I have. It's gotta a thicker neck as usual too.
Oh man that one is a beauty i have 6 of thier LPs i just got the explorer yesterday in blueberry I can get these for under 400$ cad with shipping and duty which is still a great deal for these IMO
I love Firefly guitars. I currently have 5 of them, including one of their acoustics. Bang for the buck. The typical imperfections they come with are easily remedied with a moderate-level setup. A lot of people thumb their noses up at Fireflies...but who the F cares about those people? Fireflies are great..and can be perfected pretty easily. But I'm not a lonely, soulless guitar snob...so what do I know?
you know value and decent levels of quality - and your probably not making your living as a session man so you end up with 5 guitars instead of 1/2 of one. Smart
Great looking guitar. I wish they'd expand their SG line with some more colors and finishes. I dig the natural walnut finish on this one. I've never been a fan of gold hardware though. Well done as usual.
@@alexsmart5452 3 thousand guys with a UA-cam channel have bought them to make videos like this, and the stores are empty. No offence to this channel, simply my observation.
Good review and the guitar sounds good. Adding shielding paint and foil, and polishing the frets would probably add about $25 to the cost. I bet they could also add decent pickups for another $75 above the cost of the crap pickups they use. So for $300, you would have a usable guitar. I would rather pay $300 and not have to mess with upgrades than have a defective guitar for $225.
@@Sadioli I said that Epiphone is putting out $1500 guitars, not that all of their guitars are that much. This $220 firefly represents one of their top models and it beats said Epiphone.
Nice guitar. Unbelievable price for what you get. You’re right, at this price point it would be easy to dismiss some minor issues. Another informative video.
Out of the box, I reckon this sounds awful. But for the price it’s worth it if you treat it like a shell, upgrade all the hardware, wiring and strings, and put some more QC into it - it’d be decent for home use. And just a good project for learning how to do all these upgrades.
How do you know for SURE that the specifications are exactly what are as claimed? For instance, how do you determine that the frets are stainless steel?
A shredder and studio friend has a bunch of Gibsons and Marshall stacks. He is a VERY good player. Total hater on hakf-assibg anything. His wife just got him a Harley Benton gold top and he was stunned. Raved about it for days on end. Whatever they are doing, it's working. The Firefly LP's look cool, too. But, as a logo designer, I hate their logos. Just... wrong style.
I'm not a big fan of LP-style guitars, but the finish on this one is really beautiful. It's a bit of a shame to go all the way with the finish work but leave the frets so unpolished, but as mentioned, it's a fairly easy fix.
That's what I dig about Fireflies. Whenever I buy them, I actually look forward to putting in the work to perfect them. It beats spending $1500+ for something similar.
I noticed a lot of people that go on and on and gush about Fireflies are mostly people that buy them to admire them for their colors. Firefly offers a lot of colors and hype but beyond that it's just another budget guitar from China.
So do a lot of companies and you don't have to deal with all the smoke and mirrors, a poor customer service, and if you want to return it you're out of your shipping cost... Which almost nobody else charges.
How are they putting stainless steel frets on these for that price? I have many high end guitars and none of them have come stock with stainless. Makes no sense to me as to how they can do that and make a profit. 🤷😳🤯
Great review, Darrell! BTW, all things considered - if you bought one of these Firefly LPs, swapped out the pickups with some high-quality Gibsons, how would the overall quality, sound and playability of this guitar compare to a new Epiphone LP?
i wish you bigger name guys would tell firefly to make 24fret guitars. i tired several times but they wont listen to a nobody. other than that. ive had the explorer 2 years now and i love it. defnitly needs better pickups as does any guitar under $500. and i kinda wish the frets were thinner, they are a bit hard
I would rather them upgrade electronics and forget the back binding. Looks nice though. yup, toss a set of used 57 classics in it and rock on. Use the new pick up covers. Tell your friends it came that way. no
Anyone have suggestions for pickups one might swap these out for? I tend to like warmer, cleaner, bluesy tones, not so much heavy or gritty overdrive stuff. Appreciate all input!
What's "beginner" about it? A "pro" can make Fireflies sing just like the overpriced guitars. There's plenty of professionals out there who have a Gibson LP sitting at home while they take their FF338 out to gigs. "Beginner"? smh
