  • Defensive highlights of the legendary and highly talented multiple weight world champion. Lights Out at his best!
    TikTok: / hanzagod_1
James Toney - Is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1988 to 2017. He held multiple world championships in three weight classes, including the IBF and lineal Middleweight titles from 1991 to 1993, the IBF Super-Middleweight title from 1993 to 1994, and the IBF Cruiserweight title in 2003. Toney also challenged twice for a world Heavyweight title in 2005 and 2006. Stylistically a defensive boxer, Toney utilized the shoulder roll technique taught to him by veteran trainer Bill Miller, who had once trained heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles. Toney was an exceptional counterpuncher and inside fighter, who often preferred to fight off the ropes. He possessed fast hand speed and respectable punching power throughout his career and is also noted for his toughness, having never lost any of his 92 professional bouts via stoppage.

One of the most skilled and talented fighters of all time! James Toney's career up at Heavyweight was certainly an interesting spectacle because he was the naturally smaller man against every opponent he faced. His superior speed and overall skill set (in particular his sublime defense and counter punching) negated the bigger but slower fighters. Toney's performances against Evander Holyfield and John Ruiz were among his most impressive and one sided, they also showcased his fantastic reflexes and shoulder roll technique. Lights Out past his prime but still great! www.patreon.com/haNZAgod

He was simply mesmerizing even past his prime and brought a real danger in there so opponents couldn't take him lightly. I wish he had more discipline when it came to training and eating. He probably would have went down as one of the top five greatest of all time.

Fantastic vid. I remember thinking Samuel Peter would kill Toney, but JT had these guys beat before they ever stepped in the ring. Really incredible - especially that gut-wrenching Holyfield beat.

Toney took some big clubbing shots from Peter too, some round the back of the head. He had an incredible chin considering he was basically a natural Middleweight / Super-Middleweight.

James is one of the most underrated rated “boxers” of all time. He had real boxing skills. The fights with Mike McCallum were like great chess matches. The show he put on against Iran Barkley was just an amazing example of his defense and offensive skills. I feel he got overlooked a lot because he wasn’t the easiest guy to work with and it was the flashy Roy Jones era. Toney in my opinion was a better boxer than Roy. Roy was an elite athlete with unbelievable reflex’s and power but you’ll never tell a kid to watch Roy and “work on that”, lol. Toney missed out on a lot of fights at middleweight and super middleweight because of politics unfortunately. You really can’t find many, if any, boxers that can match Toney in skill, toughness and the man loved to fight. He would literally fight anyone. Very glad I got to see him in his prime and follow his career.
