I never continued on to college because I was always ashamed that I never learned math (couldn’t see the board as a kid, issues at home made me miss school quite often, as well.) I caught a grip on everything else, I just missed out on the core of mathematics… now, being 27, I’m ready to go back. I’m destroying and getting comfortable being uncomfortable doing mathematics… but of course.. I had to start from the bottom. If I can do it, anyone can. Good luck to those that are struggling the way I am/did. Don’t let something like mathematics get in the way of conquering your dreams.

When the teacher looks mad, It's horrible. Why you teach math if you always look angry? That's one of the things why I hate taking math classes.

Yes, I think it was not the mathematics that gave me anxiety but the teacher.
She knew I was not very good and she teased me. My adrenaline was so high all the time.

I had math anxiety throughout k-12 and I hit "rock bottom" when I was taking a trig class in community college and on the first quiz, I legitimately couldn't answer any of the questions. My first thought was "maybe I should drop" because I thought there was no way I was gonna improve. After sleeping on it, I woke up thinking "I'm not gonna go out like this" and put in the most hours I ever put into studying math. Once we got to the first exam I got 100% and aced every exam afterwards. In hindsight, trigonometry was not THAT difficult of a class, but at the time I thought it was insurmountable.

5:02 That guy happens to be me. I used to be super good at math all up to high school. That gave me a false sense of confidence that I could do well in undergraduate/graduate level math. Turns out, I couldn't. It was more than just the difficulty that got me, it was the fact that there is way too much learn in this field and that it was never enough. Also the fact that much of what I Iearned didn't really have that many practical implications in the real world. At the end of the day, I was just solving puzzles and that really demotivated me to learn further math. At that point, I was just doing math for math's sake.
I really wished I had existed my undergraduate course earlier but my friends and family insisted I do my graduates in math and I also had a sliver of naive hope that something might come out of this. But my own sunk cost fallacy got to me.
Over the course my life, I learned that what we're taught in schools isn't really mathematics. Anyone can memorize algorithms and apply them in solving high school calculus or finding the determinants of a non-singular matrix. I really wish there was an actual continuity between the math taught in high school and the math taught at undergraduate levels, which is a completely different beast on it's own. That way, we could have learned what we were get into if we pursue math at much higher level. At least in other STEM field there is some level of continuity.
P.S: No hard feelings towards anyone who has real passion in this field. I really wish I had that same passion for this field but unfortunately couldn't develop it. I was really deluded by my ability to do high school maths.

Couldn't agree more and just really REALLY wanted to thanks. Your channel is invaluable.
I first had "math anxiety" during my first Logics lecture exam, when I realized my knowledge was nowhere where it should be, and acing the seminar didn't mean an instant pass in the lecture exam... Just looked at the test page and tried my very best for the 90 minutes I had but knew I couldn't do it... then I realized I may not be as good as math then I thought - cause I never had to study or try... I almost wanted to give up persuing my degree and all...
And then your videos came and it just helped me accept that "just being good" or getting things fast or not getting things fast, or failing to understand something doesn't mean anything just that one hasn't put in enough hours... I felt I couldn't do my degree because at that point I felt I cannot understand any real math stuff... but watching your videoes just helped me SO much to realize that it's not the point to understand instantly, working hard is okay. It's not a shame.
I felt suddenly math symbols got scary "I have Logics PTSD" even though I loved it before the exam... then your vidoes helped me realize all I really need is just to go thtouhg the language, practice and retake the course it's not the end of my capabilities.
I think I will rewatch this video again and again if whenever I fail a test, or an exam in the future.

I had it BAD when I was a kid, and didn’t start to get over it until I was in my 50s. For me? Nobody seemed to understand math like I did, and nobody asked how I got to my conclusions. So, “it must be me.” Then there was the embarrassment of being called on to answer questions in math when I “knew” I couldn’t do it. Not being able to articulate my confusion, because I didn’t have the language. Then, BIG ONE: Thinking it was easy for everybody else. What you say is so true: It is SUPPOSED to be hard! Don’t worry about the answer. Worry about the process you need to use to GET to the answer. When I was a little kid, it was drilled into me that the only thing that mattered was the answer. I’d be up at the white board in a multiplication “bee,” with 7 x 8 begging for an answer and my “team” depending on me to get it right, and I was in a cold sweat and had No. Freaking. Idea. The answer didn’t matter, though. What 7 x 8 means is what really matters. If you work through the process, and understand the process, the answer will come (eventually). I did eventually figure out 7 x 8, but that awful feeling of being anxious and stupid did not leave me until I was in my 50s.

Most people understand most subjects in terms of the first natural language they learned while very young. Math is not that natural language, so translation is required between the two. After a translation is accomplished, it must be understood and combined with other understandings in the natural language, and then remembered. This process requires time and effort in a low-stress mental environment. Math is a foreign language; learning and mastering math is not a trivial activity. Time, effort, patience, and much practice are required to arrange one's mental physiology for conscious and unconscious success.

I’ve always been under the assumption that I missed some stuff somewhere, or got stuck, and just got left behind and could never catch up. As a result, I developed a math anxiety, but now I just think that the ways math was taught back in the pre-internet days weren’t as good as some of the methods are now. So I’m more than willing to give it another try. It’s just a matter of looking until I can find someone that can explain the concepts in a way that my brain will process.

I remember I struggled to wrap my mind around writing proofs. I struggled, quite a bit, yeah, and it's normal, it's ok. But that was definitely not anxiety. Maybe, try not to be scared of the difficulty, embrace it, see it as a funny challenge or a little game. Don't think about the apparent difficulty of the problem, or the consequences of the failure. Just focus on the problem itself, peacefully. Try your best to overcome the difficulty, and take your time... Chill, focus, take a break if you need to, no worries.
Don't think about the consequences of a failure, what's the point of it but to disturb your mind? Try not to give a damn, yeah, take your time, just think about the problem, peacefully. A very calm & peaceful mental state is essential to focus on a math problem I think. At least, it helped me a lot. Hope this message will help ✨

The strangest thing I have learned about myself is, taking tests nowadays (not even with math) I learned that my post office job has destroyed my lower back and I actually start having pain from just sitting down at the college desk seats. Last year I had a Calculus test and I was more focused on trying to find a more comfortable position and that was leading to a more different kind of test anxiety
I invested in a lumbar pillow I bring along now. I think also people dont realize how important it is to not chug a bunch of caffeine down before a test or else youll start feeling uncomfortable needing to go to the bathroom which also led me to a test anxiety issue
Just those two factors alone make taking a test not really an issue anymore. Even if I barely know the material I feel much more happier. relaxed, focused knowing how to prevent body pains before something important 😁

I thought I was the only one I used to chug down like a brown shaken espresso every calculus exam but I kept on needing to use the restroom and some professors may allow you to use or not use the restroom which sucks. I was always good with my calc I and II professors they allowed me to use the restroom. My calc III professor didn’t allow us to use the restroom during any of our exams.

This is SUCH an important video.
One of the best teachers in math I ever had drew the class a diagram of a staircase, and explained that over time sometimes you're on the flat part of the step, where everything feels easy, and other times you're climbing vertically to the next step and that's when everything feels impossibly hard and you want to quit. What I took away from that is to really savor the moments when I'm on the flat step and math feels blissful and easy, and to push through when I'm climbing to the next step because the struggle won't last forever. Thanks for your channel.

Aye! I clearly remember (ptsd...) getting the exam sheets (lime green or off pink), flipping through all the pages hoping to find something I recognized, and then picking one and starting - once I got going, the problems (usually) fell into place... The worst part was gathering after the exam and listening to everyone say "how'd you approach the xyz problem...". Ack!!! At least the solutions were available outside the exam room once the time period was closed... Then the real tears began!

Most of us do calculus without have a solid understanding of the structure of real numbers. We cannot do calculus on rational numbers. Most of the students who do first course in pure math feel uncomfortable when they see things like real numbers, cauchy sequences, cardinality of natural numbers and real numbers. These concepts appear strange. It takes good amount of effort for students to be comfortable with these concepts.

So to me that implies that with hard work I should be able to reach your level one day. I mean since I started off with more "advanced" building blocks.
Also my measure theory class only felt hard, not veeeeeery hard, so that's motivating too :P.

With regard to really hard teachers. I think it is more important to impress upon them that if I'm paying them, they are my employee. I'm hiring them for a purpose. If they cannot manage to serve my purpose, I must fire them. The same goes for their department, college, and university. They think they are in charge, when they are clearly not. When their students start treating them like the employees they are, they'll either have an income, or they will not. That's my position as a mature adult.
What I'm paying for? The experiences of organized exposure to a subject, the time for correction and review. The access to constructive and supportive criticism. If a teacher cannot help you understand a thing, even after you having put the time and effort into learning, THEY have failed, and deserve a negative review, and all that comes with it.

I have to admit that : I've been suffering from math anxiety since 2 years. I don't know what did hit me . ..Maybe because I work hard and I revise well and I want to be perfect in the math exam.I always want to get the best grade in class(I used to do before having this "new" mind-set) .Being competitive adds a lot of pressure and makes it even harder for me to achieve my objectives.. Being in a high- competitive school(environment) causes stress and anxiety. It happens only in math subject( I can't even sleep well before math exam). Now , I've lost confidence. I should convince my self that it is ok if any collegue is a little BETTER than me but my stubborn unconsciousness doesn't want it ...Can u even believe this? Please math sorcer can you make a video about " satisfaction in life and math"?

They look really good for either review, as a companion to a math course's textbook, as a source of problems, or to learn math for non-math majors. Apparently, they have solutions to all problems in the book, are full of problems, and seem to teach in a fairly unique, step-by-step way.

The biggest problem I have faced is that anxiety is a stacking debuff.
Not only will the anxiety of doing the math slow you down, but external anxieties outside of mathematics also add to this anxiety load.
If I have a bad day were nothing is going right outside of mathematics, I don't even attempt doing mathematics that day until all of those other life issues are resolved.
I cannot even get in the right frame of mind for mathematics unless all my other issues are taken care of.
For me mathematics is my reward for getting everything else right in my day.
