A massive conflict of interest from the principals in a Government that owns 51% of mining leases, negotiated without the participation of the communities directly affected by this exploitation. The Government should recuse itself from this affair as it is likely that only a few principals sitting at the current negotiating table will benefit financially via modes of compensation that should be subject to third party internal audit. The island's ecosystem is under threat at time when global warming and other climate and environmental factors threaten water resources around the world. Water is a vital resource and Jamaica with its 200 rivers should e protected. Hopefully the Chief can petition the United Nations (UNEP) program to designate the Cockpit Country as a protected environment and extend human rights provisions to the inhabitants.
I'm from Clarendon so I've seen this first hand. My father worked for ALCOA. They moved an entire neighborhood to build a new mud lake. That's a lake of mud filled with chemicals as a waste product of the bauxite process. I rode my bicycle up on one of them as a kid with my cuz, that thing bubbles and sizzles like a volcano, but its mud.
Those mud lakes starts out as watery muddy caustic soda sludge filled with other heavy metals that are left after they extract the raw bauxite mineral, it is highly toxic, highly alkaline, it seeps into the water table of the fresh water wells and poisons everything that drinks it, you start to see a lot of cancers popping up around the island now
It breaks my heart all that those in charge have been able to do and take away from our people. Jamaica is no longer for the Jamaicans and greed continues to be prejudicial to our people. We are poorer and poorer everyday because our resources are been given away and we do not reap any benefit.

Sorry but you’re delusional. Aluminum is in most things we use on a daily basis. We are all part of the problem because we spend money on these things which keeps the industry growing.
I worked for a mining firm and I never once see the land that was "reclaimed" farmed again. Maybe a little grass grow but not even enough to feed livestock on. That and people who live off the land can't just wait for that land to come back. They work it every day from before sunrise to well after dusk.
@@thegreataynrand7210 I like how it has to be all or nothing. You know they probably could have gotten a deal where they mine the bauxite and the people of the land got something for it. Compromise? Making deals? These are options the mining firm could have explored. Case in point: the Navajo Nation owns their own mining company called the Navajo Transitional Energy Corporation whereby they mine their own land and they reap the profits. Such compromises are possible. It doesn't have to be an either/or decision. You're an Ayn Rand fan, by the sound of things. You of all people should be shouting at the Jamaican government for "muh big government overreach" in this case and supporting the rights of landowners instead of this clear violation of sovereignty.
@@KaiserMattTygore927 IKR? If they're so big into Ayn Rand, they should be shouting at the government for violating the sovereignty of landowners instead of siding with Big Government and the corporations.
So them mining is like committing genocide on the people. The mining is clearly having a effect on the people and the government ignoring it. These government officials need to be taught a huge f’n lesson
In Guatemala US companies bough nearly all the fertile land and did nothing with them so the people would starve til they accept such low wages they’d be practically slaves.

Watching this from South Africa 🇿🇦, When you not seen as a human, this is what the government does...... Amandla (power) to my Jamaican brothers and sisters.
Enough tears and crying, we KNOW what we need to do. Jamaicans have killed each other so much, now is the time to turn our attention to our true enemies.
Their own government sold the land. The locals should be fighting the local government not the mining company. Same thing is happening in Bimini Islands.
My dad (jamaican) was telling me about this. He was frustrated because of our usage of aluminum foil in the US. He watched his people receiving nothing for the aluminum mined.
It's so sad to drive through Jamaica and see the damage these mines have done. We've had to move our farms. I have sick family members. They're destroying the waters and soil that so many rely on and will never come back. Something really drastic has to happen. HOLNESS DOES NOT CARE!!!
When I went to Jamaica January 2022, I stayed in a place where they no longer grow mangos because of all of the mining that is going on. Basically the tree still grows but they don’t bare fruit. It’s really bad.
What Audley is saying makes no sense. The mining takes place in pockets of land, yes. But if you keep approving for more and more pockets of land to be mined, it adds up. The fact that we're no longer the world's leader in bauxite mining shows that we're running out. When that happens, what next? And he's saying they need to "focus more intensely on the interests of our citizens". The whole video shows the people most affected by the mining don't want it. Then, at the end, the say it's a closed case? That seems democratic? The man said we neva put Andrew in power for this.
Honestly, if there was a way to restore the land after mining, I don't think people would be so against it. If it didn't have the potential to totally disrupt the whole island's water supply, I don't think people would be so against it. Audley said they need to focus on the citizens' interests so meet with them. Go into the communities most affected and talk with the residents. Don't just say "case closed" when there have been no discussions had.
So you're against the government mining natural resources to benefit the people of Jamaica? You rather the resources sit idle and then you turn around blaming politicians for keeping us poor?
Governments are supposed to be for the people, by the people. But all too often, we see them turning against those they're supposed to represent. it's heartbreaking to see.
This is happening in Mexico as well, especially Canadian companies in the Mixteca region. Solidarity w our brothers and sisters of Jamaica! SABOTAGE THEM!!

I consider myself a history buff and was disappointed that I had never heard of the sovereign people of cockpit country. Our history classes on the secondary and college levels rob us by withholding so much information. If corporations continue to value resources more than humanity we will see things like this continue to happen. It’s no different than the trans Atlantic slave trade, the genocide of Native Americans and Aboriginals, the Diamond mines in Congo. It’s just heartbreaking 💔
Vice is amazing for shedding light on this topic! I went to Jamaica in 2019 and fell in love with the people and beauty of the land. Everyday I woke up there I felt like I was in paradise. This is heartbreaking! I hope this mining is stopped!
I’ve never been to Jamaica but it’s definitely on my bucket list of places to go in my life before all is said and done I’ve been invited there by couple of close friends Who are Jamaican and I just really rock with them they are vibe their style just everything really of course not everyone that would be like saying you know all people in power or smart or good or kind or all people in jail or bad or guilty I can’t say all of Jamaica but everywhere has issues but overall love it the people the country. And I can’t believe the nerve and goal of that guy to say he has Jamaica in his best interest but doesn’t give a crap about the people and of course that’s a conflict of interest are you kidding me and it be different if it was 49% or even 50 but you heard the old saying about 51% yup if that’s the case then every citizen should get a percentage are a cut of the profit from the Mining companies income but honestly if you asked 99% of Jamaicans they would rather just have their land and their peace and quiet and harmony and to maintain the diverse and complex Ecosystems and environments
As a descendants of maroons I'm saddened by this😢. Maroons fought diligently and bravely for Jamaica and won our Sovereignty to live on the land in peace. Our people got to be unified and remain strong and resolute, thus maintaining the pressure on the government to preserve our rights to exist on our lands. Please 🙏 pray for my people...✊️
I do admire the Maroons and their bravery and for defeating the British on many occasions. However, the Maroons did not fight for Jamaica but for themselves. They signed a treaty to capture runaway slaves and to return them back to their owners in return for leaving them alone. Don’t recreate history.
Idc what anyone says... It ain't "people" destroying this beautiful planet. It's corporations like this that's making it uninhabitable at an extreme fast pace. 💯 Great work Vice 💯 #ThankYou
But the corporations are supported by the people. If we didn't want to live a certain way their would be no need for mining companies. The consumer is what drives these activities.

And? You want us to go back to the stone age ?
@@thegreataynrand7210 Its not up to you, you're not involved in this, these people are getting fucked and getting nothing in return.
This sounds like how a violent conflict starts.
thought that was Idris Elba in the thumbnail
So them mining is like committing genocide on the people. The mining is clearly having a effect on the people and the government ignoring it. These government officials need to be taught a huge f’n lesson
In Guatemala US companies bough nearly all the fertile land and did nothing with them so the people would starve til they accept such low wages they’d be practically slaves.
So?

Watching this from South Africa 🇿🇦, When you not seen as a human, this is what the government does...... Amandla (power) to my Jamaican brothers and sisters.
Audley lying threw his teeth.
Peace to all Jamaica🇯🇲🇲🇦 and all Maroon family 💚🤝🏽 freedom in all our lands for all our people
Sad mi affi watch foreign news fi a get dis report, please share this.

The mine right right next to the school...
The images with the digging were just shocking
It's so sad to drive through Jamaica and see the damage these mines have done. We've had to move our farms. I have sick family members. They're destroying the waters and soil that so many rely on and will never come back. Something really drastic has to happen. HOLNESS DOES NOT CARE!!!
When I went to Jamaica January 2022, I stayed in a place where they no longer grow mangos because of all of the mining that is going on. Basically the tree still grows but they don’t bare fruit. It’s really bad.
Here to spread freedom and democracy!!!
When will Jamaica stop selling out thier own people. This is so terrible and cruel.
The hidden picture behind all these beaches and all these all inclusive resorts...
Everyone needs to hear about this!!
I love Jamaican accent. Its the best.
Andrew need to go and Audley shaw sound like a fool...bout perception. kmt
This brought tears to my eyes 😢😢😢, why these government stay so
So you're against the government mining natural resources to benefit the people of Jamaica? You rather the resources sit idle and then you turn around blaming politicians for keeping us poor?
The whole world is in shambles.
Solidarity to you as well from Jamaica. We shall overcome it!
thanks for the return and didn't think it was done
He's just on board and hasn't moved his ass to go to the region and see with his own eyes what is happening rather than lapping up the story he's been fed by corporate interests. Cur.
How can people from other countries help with this issue?
Vice has the best … the best documentaries.
It is just painful to see this happen
If 51% is owned by the Jamaican government then it’s not an American company
it depends on the contract that's signed
you forgot to calculate in how much of the jamaican government is owned by american companies.
And where the headquarters are
@@jjdelft3216 yeah corrupt leaders take bad deals that only benefit themselfs and not the people
on paper it may be 51% government owned but global multinationals find ways of making sure that money and profit dissapears into their pockets through many ways
The government moving wicked. God bless the community of people affected. 😔
Yo I got legit goosebumps watching this. I love my country I love being a Jamaican but the corruption against the people is making me hate being here.
Vice is amazing for shedding light on this topic! I went to Jamaica in 2019 and fell in love with the people and beauty of the land. Everyday I woke up there I felt like I was in paradise. This is heartbreaking! I hope this mining is stopped!
This guy is great, super professional, would love to see more of him
What is wrong with Jamaican government officials, I hope they come to their senses and may God bless those who are affected!
I’m not a Jamaican but I see the only option is revolution we gota finish with these greedy bastards
If not there going to replace nature with money
So Jamaica got "democracy and freedom". RIP
“Bob Marley” and our ancestors would be outraged! Power to Jamaica 🇯🇲 such a beautiful country! One love!💗
Know much about Bob's father?
Thank you for this report.
Wow that lady’s yard was beautiful 😍… the cho cho, bananas, yams, plantains, pumpkin wow
Idc what anyone says...
It ain't "people" destroying this beautiful planet.
It's corporations like this that's making it uninhabitable at an extreme fast pace. 💯
Great work Vice 💯 #ThankYou
But the corporations are supported by the people. If we didn't want to live a certain way their would be no need for mining companies. The consumer is what drives these activities.
Corporations are run by people…
The Jamaican government owes the rest of the world too much money to care about their own people. That’s always been the problem
They call us africans primitive and poor countries yet they develop their countries using our resources and minerals😪😪
