- Working in Formula 1 is something thousands of people dream of, but Formula 1 can be a very difficult industry to get into. So in this video I will be talking about Formula Student. In short Formula Student is a worldwide motorsport competitions involving students at universities who build the car and manage the team, and currently the majority of people working in Formula 1 have been involved in Formula Student one way or another, so don't miss out!

What’s funny about this series is it puts on full display just how important having sponsorships and being backed by your factory in this case school is. my local university partakes (purdue me) in this and it’s basically a passion project with zero funding from the school and everything is done by the students and then you have teams in Germany that are almost a kin to a works program. it’s a cool concept but my problem with it is for something that’s supposed to be low on the totem pole and inclusive for all students it still requires absorbent amounts of money to perform at any level that’s satisfying and sustainable for a program.
That's fair enough, but I guess that doesn't take away from giving everyone an opportunity. It's more referring to how much the universities are willing to pay to fund the team 👍
My friends actually participated and I actually helped with body fabrication and livery design as it was zero funded project from my university because the university board wasnt interested as their focus was on another competition.
They made a chassis with junk parts with an engine from a scooter and collaborated with a bunch of other phd students who end up fitting their thesis onto our car especially those in the area of fluid dynamics, chemical and sensor technology.
The radical design was the car being insanely low and with mechanical moving mass that reacts to the balance. (Owing to aerodynamic effect is weak because these cars are not fast)
Focusing entirely on mechanical grip, the car looks like a pinewood derby lol and It kinda dominated until our engine blew up that caused our driver to crash. And we retired entirely due to being out of budget to repair lol but still keeping 2nd place.
It ultimately doesn’t really matter for your resumé…
You don’t need to necessarily be in a successful formula student team.

My school has no money for us and it showed, and we dont have the network of sponsers
I also took part in the Formula Student, when I was in University. Today I switch sides and now I am a judge in the cost and manufactoring event. I had met some from Bath Racing - but I haven't judge them yet. 😁

I make part in a Formula Student team at Brazil! It's pretty awesome! I work in the aerodynamics area of our car but as you said, it's hard to build everything with carbon fiber, because of the money or the knowledge on how to proper use it. Nevertheless we are proud of what we achieve with so little. Congratulations everybody that makes the effort to keep pushing this kind of projects forward!!

I've been a complete disgrace as a student, never dared dreaming about working in Motorsports (despite following with a massive passion), when I ended up on a Red Bull backed, Austrian Formula Student team by accident for three years, cumulating in an invitation to a job interview for a NASCAR team straight out of design judging. Despite the visa falling through, it opened the door to freelance GT4 race/data engineering and a full-time engineering position in Formula E, contributing to winning two double world championships so far.
The only thing this video is not covering: how useful Formula Student is for networking. I failed to finish my Master's degree yet I never applied for any job because people kept reaching out to me.

My Alma Mater, the University of Florida, has one of these teams and I've been able to tour the garage and design area a handful of times. Those kids take this VERY seriously and it was very common to see the lights on very late at night because a few students were designing parts on solidworks or doing some sort of work on the car. It was really cool to see and my Gators even had a Porche sponsorship, which definitely made their jackets look really cool

Being in formula SAE (the equivalent in Australia) for the years helped me get my current job as a firmware engineer at Haltech. The skills and understanding I gained in FSAE is regularly very helpful at work.

It‘s funny how you say that some teams can‘t afford Aero due to lack of sponsorship.
Many teams joke around that the sole purpose of aero is that you have more surfaces for logos and sponsors.

This is true, we had sponsors turn us down because our team didn't have any wings on it.
I did Formula SAE when I was in university (in Canada) but the amount of time and effort you have to put in outside of your regular school hours is crazy. The programs aren't well funded by a lot of universities. It's a great outlet to learn a lot of automotive fundamentals but I wish it just had more support from the schools.
Absolutely, it should be nurtured from a younger age so people are prepared for it 🙌

Hey man i see that you're from India too. I'm applying to Oxford Brookes University in a couple years time. Do you think I have chance to get into their formula student team. And get further up into the sport after graduation? Considered that I'm an Indian. I've read many articles that suggest Indians can't make it to Formula One. What is your view on this as you've got some experience with Formula Student?
@@bhuvankoduru4232 if u want to get into formula 1 you need huge backing.These drivers are trained from very ages.The physical/mental health preparation for this is immense.Even if you have the all the financial sport you need to show your skills in the junior categories to get even spotted.Yes its very tough.But sometimes you have the Luck..strive hard.Thats all.

F1 in schools is also a thing .similar idea but with a much much smaller car (you can hold it in your hand) and it’s propelled by a co2 cartridge in a straight line .

Looking to join the formula student team of my university team next year as a photographer to hopefully get a career in motorsport photography. I'm also eyeing some engineering function but I'm not sure which one because I study biomedical engineering right now which is kind of a jack of all trades master of none study
It's not that they go for big downforce, it's just that they go at such a low speed that they need to have a large surface with an aggressive angle of attack to have some downforce that will make a difference (low Reynolds number aerodynamic). Fiberglass can be used to lower the cost and have more points for the cost report, the 600 CC engine is to powerfull to be at 100% for most of the track anyways. And yes it can be a good cradle for talent. Ten years after being the composite leader in 1999 for the FSAE at ÉTS in Montreal, I was an engineering lead for windmills repairs overlooking sixty workers on three sites in the US mid-west.

Is F1 in school similar to this ?
I'm not on our university's FSAE team, but I am on our Baja (offroading) team and it's a challenge building a car in time. We have the advantage of not really worrying about aero (unless Cal Poly's aero kit catches on) and engine (standardized kohler engine), but we have many of the same problems as FSAE. The university seems to hate student teams and has been funding us less and less while our ambitions keep growing. And it's not just funding they're shorting us on. They're handicapping our machine shop access, which sucks since we try to make as many parts as possible in-house. A lot of the good universities have amazing support behind their teams, and without it teams struggle. I wish more universities would step up and properly fund and equip their student teams so that they can compete at their very best instead of having to worry about whether they'll have enough money to make it to competition every year
sadly my university recently axed their formula student team and denied letting it become a society :(

I'm assuming Formula Student is another term for Formula SAE (that's what me and my Baja friends call it anyways).
My school has two student teams for SAE: Baja and Formula. Only the prior actually makes time to get into the shop and put together a vehicle, so I naturally joined them to spice up my resume. I'm not really that big of a car guy, but the skills used to get this whole project moving on the ground and being able to take a beating on rough terrain are what some companies are looking for.
Regardless, I'm sure every SAE CDS (Collegiate Design Series) grants a world of opportunities to students who participate and put real effort into their project(s).
Well usually the AE part of SAE is to do with where you are in the world 👍 so for the UK it's called FSUK rather than FSAE
I'm planning to join the Formula Student Team of the Hochschule Esslingen next year and this video is one reason.

@@TheRacingPilot I competed for two years, some teams receive sponsors from massive company’s such as kingspan and redbull bwt etc.
The competition has grown my interest in formula 1, I am from Ireland and it’s really popular here, Irish teams have won the world finals only once before but have been runners up many times.
But as a result from this competition, formula student teams from universities all over Ireland are often texting f1 in schools members offering them a place on the team.

There's also Baja SAE, my university partakes in it but not formula. I'm not sure how much formula costs, but I'm pretty sure that Baja is much more affordable. I think the car we're building this year should cost $9-10k.

Build your social media, engagement with your university and faculty, outreach to sponsors for in-kind goods or services or cash. Having a good business team is just as crucial to build a strong team.

I’m I Australia but would still like to know going into uni for the first time next year how do i know what Universities are still doing formula student because I know some have done it in previous years but is there any way of knowing which one will still be doing it next year before I pick my uni

Why is it only universities taking part and not including trade schools, secondary schools, adult education centres and similar institutions?
because you need a specialised workshop to work and manufacture all the pieces of the car from scratch which most schools dont have money for, and you need to be an engineer to actually make a proper race car in the first place. Im a mechanical engineering student from Swansea formula student and were always using heavy precision machinery to work with carbon fibre etc

Don't pick a uni based on a team. You can join a team that hasn't performed well/smaller and be way more involved in more aspects of the team. Your individual performance within the team is what counts on your CV

It varies uni to uni, can be as little as a few thousand or as much as $1 million
My college takes part in it. Or at least used to I think. Didn't make the cut as I was more interested in driving but I am too old to start driving either so......fk my life lol :D

If Formula Student isn't hosted anywhere in the country, can we work with Formula Student and our university to bring the Formula Student competition to the institution? Like we would form a team within a club in the university, and contact Formula Student to let us participate.
Yes. You can form a formula student club in your university. If you want participate in the Events with your car, you need to follow the rules. Most of the european Events mostly use the Formula Student Germany rules. Also the Handbook of each event says some things you have to keep in mind.
Formula Student is the racing category. If you want to participate in the Events in Europe, you can register your Team at the Formula Student Germany site, I think.
I got accepted to Hertfordshire and Oxford brookes I really want to do this formula student, has anyone done it before especially in one of these universities?
I haven't myself but I know Oxford Brookes are very good at Formula Student so that would be a good choice!

Hi i am working on a complete new formula student team. And i design the suspension.
My question is. Where does your suspension sit on ? The wishbone or the uprights.
I know i am a competitor, but our team is a totally new team (because og Corona) so we are not a strong competitor
Not entirely sure what you mean but the wheel is held in place by bearings in the upright. The upright is attached to the wishbones. Vertical suspension travel is done by applying load to the pushrods/pullrods which are in some way attached to the shocks, so effectively the car sits on these.
Suspension design isn't simple. Read race car vehicle dynamics by Milliken and Milliken

I myself wanted to enroll in it but funding is so important and in India it is difficult so hoping that I get a work in such Formula student and thanks for reminding me there was another way to get into F1. I forgot about it since 2018

That's awesome!! In terms of funding, sponsors are your way forward. If you have the resources to start a team that can compete then start reaching out to companies to sponsor! The best ones to aim for are Motorsport component manufacturers 👍

Of course! Whilst Formula Student is a great place to get started, it isn't the only way in. If you could demonstrate an interest in motorsport through other extracurricular activities that would be a great way to help with job applications and interviews

Not one African event...I know we're poor but South Africans surely have money and can participate...especially the Boers...I'm sure Stellenbosch or an equivalent can come up with the funds to do this...we keep losing our best cos the world doesn't believe in us and it's frustrating...
