Mt. Shasta, California: Hiking & Exploring

  • Mt. Shasta, California is a beautiful place that offers plenty of outdoor activities all year round. I went for a four day trip in the Spring and my favorite part was discovering all the cool hiking spots in the area.
    My first hike in the area was Ney Springs Canyon, which is a short and sweet 1.5 mile loop with beautiful views and some cool history! There once was a hotel deep in the canyon back in the late 1800's which served as a health retreat because of the natural mineral water in the area. Ruins of the hotel's stone foundation are still visible today with the words "Ney Springs 1898" carved into a cement slab. I was surprised to see that a spigot coming out of the foundation was still leaking water! The hike leads to the beautiful Ney Springs Falls, a raging waterfall in the middle of the forest.
    My second hike was at McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. Although it's located about an hour outside of Mt. Shasta, I still really wanted to check it out. After all, it was a photo of Burney Falls that I came across on Instagram that lead me to Mt. Shasta in the first place! Theodore Roosevelt called it "the eighth wonder of the world" and it was truly a beautiful sight to see. The falls rage all year round and you will probably find yourself just staring at it in awe for quite some time before continuing on the hike which continues on a loop up and around the falls.
    My third hike was Spring Hill, a 2.7 mile loop located right in the city of Mt. Shasta. It's not a difficult hike, but there is a rapid and steep elevation gain at the beginning which will definitely kick your butt. On the way up, you will take in many amazing views of Mt. Shasta. On my second night in town, I drove south and checked out the neighboring city of Dunsmuir. The old rail station is worth checking out and I recommend stopping at the Railroad Car Resort for drinks and dinner. It was here that the bartender gave me the inside scoop about the local cults and legends of Mt. Shasta!
    On my third day in town, I drove south and hiked Castle Crags. The trail is difficult and begins with a steep, rapid ascent through thick forest. As soon as I felt like my legs were going to fall off, the forest cleared and there were beautiful views of the "crags" up above me. I kept going until I reached the end of the hike; a dome that couldn't be safely climbed without climbing gear, so I sat and ate my lunch before heading back down.
    On my last night in Mt. Shasta, I hiked Box Canyon trail which begins right by the Box Canyon Dam. The trail passes through a cool old car graveyard in the forest. Apparently back in the 1950's, locals used to push their junked cars down the cliff to dispose of them! On my very last day in Mt. Shasta, I got up super early before the sunrise and drove to Lake Siskiyou. As soon as the sun started poking over the horizon, I got some beautiful photos of Mt. Shasta reflecting off of the peaceful lake.
    If you've never been to Mt. Shasta before, I definitely recommend checking it out. Especially if you are a hiking enthusiast!

    Stupendous video review my man, might even call it a mini documentary. I know how much time it takes to shoot and edit something like this I actually did a review of the Vernal Falls hike on my channel. Perfect narration man. Don't change a thing

      @@ExploreAlways thank you sir, I mostly do photography related videos not really travel unfortunately so the channel may or may not appeal. I also just got finished watching your Salton sea episode. I didn't know the founder passed away. Also I always wondered where those dead fish came from because the sea almost look like it was always too salty to support life. That place is a medium format landscape photographers dream. I also know you don't want to break down out there or not have enough water. I don't know if you know about Huell Howser I'm sure you do he was one of my favorite travel channels I didn't mind his quirky ways LOL. California Through My Lens is a good Channel also but between me and you they're a little light and I appreciate how much deeper you dive into your locations especially including relevant history.

    Very nice. I was hoping you'd mention the town of Mt Shasta. It's pretty, the people are very friendly, and you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a hippy. There's also the gorgeous Bhuddist temple there. They do retreats with the public on Mount Shasta. It draws people from all over the world. Very open minded area.

    Mossbrae falls is wonderful, just watch out for trains, you'll usually have one pass by while you walk the tracks to the falls and there's plenty of room to step off to the side and let them pass. it would make for a great video.

    You're talking about some place that I feel at home right there. Shasta is one of the most Serene and beautiful places in all of California and my opinion. There's a few places you have to check out if you get a chance though. One is Castle Lake it's right above Lake Siskiyou and the other is the McCloud River. Even has a Reservoir in a town nearby it. You got to check it out if you get the chance

    • @mmakshak
      @mmakshak 6 років тому

      Good advice, Toggle. I visited Castle Lake when there was only one other car there, and the serenity was great. McCloud Falls has 3 different spots(upper, lower, and middle-?), and is an easily accessible area.

    I’m from around there! If you ever come back go to mossbrae falls in Dunsmuir! Also I’m sad that you won’t get to experience the beauty of Whiskey town lake and all of its waterfalls
    Edit: Finished the video. Everyone takes that path to mossbrae and there has never been any issues with getting in trouble. It’s worth it!

    If you ever go back to Castle Crags check out Root Creek Falls. It's a lesser known to people not from the area but well worth it to see the wet times of year, it is a series of falls that are altogether 350 feet tall. Check it out here: hikemtshasta.com/castle-crags/root-creek-trail/

    At Fairly falls you can smell the neffrin and mint jubes.
    My girlfriend’s grandma even set a little dog on fire up there Wow, grandma! She’s a saucy riff.

    As european citizen, I sort of envy the freedom to drive a 5.7 liter HEMI truck without going broke due to the gas prices (1 gallon here in Germany currently sets you back 7.30 dollars). But I cannot stop to wonder why these are still so popular in the US, even though I understand it to some extent.

    • @yearginclarke
      @yearginclarke 5 років тому +1

      Eh...your not missing much. I live in the US but I would only have one if you need power for pulling something heavy like an RV trailer or for work purposes. I work in logging where we use company trucks like that, but aside from work purposes I have no desire to own one myself due to cost reasons, they are a pain in tight parking and cities, and I just never saw what's so great about a big truck.

Since I'm no longer able to hike much, I depend upon areas near the road. I definitely want to live in this area, as I feel it is where I belong. I've also helped the area.

      It'd be a shame for folks to be that close to Burney Falls (less than an hour from Mt. Shasta, actually - I regularly drive between Mt. Shasta and Fall River Mills, another town just a bit beyond the Falls!) and not know that you could see one of the world's most beautiful waterfalls with just a bit more driving. A lot of the water of Burney Falls comes right out of the rock face - that's not an illusion! So, it's good for travelers to know it's a sightseeing/hiking option if they're traveling that close anyway.

    • @mmakshak
      @mmakshak 6 років тому

      I thought the old Coke factory shut down, and Crystal Geyser opened it back up recently. BTW, Crystal Geyser from here benefits greatly from structuring. You just have to do it for a long time. Nothing beats glass(plastic imparts something to the water.). I'm currently structuring and drinking Adobe Spring water, as I ran out of Headwaters' water, and that was mostly gathered in plastic bottles. Headwaters' water is where I made the determination that glass is much better than plastic.
