Trailhead: Bunny Flat
Route: Avalanche Gulch
Distance: 12.3 miles
Elevation Gain: 7,411’
Summit: 14,179’
Fyi this is not a hike, winter mountaineer skills are required. There was lots of snow on Shasta this year so crampon, ice axe, glissading, and navigation skills are needed. Right when we set foot on the trailhead we saw a search and rescue helicopter land right next to the trail. Once we got to Helen Lake we had found out that a guy had slide 1,500' down the mountain and gashed his forehead with an ice axe. He was lifted off and taken to the hospital with a slight concussion but fortunately he was ok. Please be aware of the risks before attempting this climb.
The route begins at the Bunny Flat Trailhead where they have pit toilets, wag bags, and self issuing wilderness and summit passes. Summit passes cost $25. Due to the amount of snow accumulation this year there is no clear route and because of that we unintentionally bypassed Horse Camp and 50/50 camp and just followed the gulch all the way up to Helen Lake (10,400’) where we set up basecamp. The climb from Bunny Flat Trailhead to Helen Lake was roughly 3,611’. Sunday was our summit bid day, we had an alpine start and made our way up from Helen Lake to Red Banks, which is considered the crux of the climb. From the start we gained over 2,500' in about a mile. We passed Red Banks and climbed straight to Thumb Rock. There’s a pretty gnarly bergschrund crevasse on the Konwakiton Glacier that we were not expecting, so watch your step if you plan to go up this time of the year. We followed the ridge to the base of Misery Hill (13,000’), made our way to the summit plateau and up the summit pinnacle to the summit. From basecamp to basecamp it took us 8 hours total, 6 hours up and 2 hours down. As you can see in the video we had the perfect weather window.
Thank you to Robin, Mido, Sonia, and Vanina for being such wonderful team members and friends.

Thanks Jorge! Appreciate it.
I have to solo climb this mountain one day. Big congtats from Sweden
Thanks Thomas! It's one of my favorite mountains to climb in the Cascade Mountain Range. You definitely should when have the chance.
Loved the video! Getting me excited for my trip next weekend, thanks for sharing.
Thanks! How did your climb go? I'd love to hear about it!
Friends That Hike we went last week of June and had awesome weather and made it to the top. Long and arduous but so glad I did it. Misery hill was KILLER.
Fantastic!
Very nice job! I was supposed to climb it this month, but an injury prevented me. Hopefully later this summer, or else next year.
Thanks man! Hey the mountain will always be there. Get well and I'm sure your redemption climb will be the more sweeter.
Vanina! She stayed at our Airbnb in Redding. I was just watching your video randomly because my son and I summited last week! How cool to see her. She was so encouraging to me about the climb. When did she summit? Before you got there?
Crazy small world! Vanina is such a great person, I love her energy. Vanina actually met us at Helen Lake and the day we summited she was feeling ill and decided to stay behind. I love Mt Shasta. I hope you and your son had a great climb.
@@friendsthathike5729 Sorry to hear about Vanina. My son and I had a perfect day. Loved it! facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10157218055215782&set=a.10157187790595782&type=3&theater
@@lesliehall3402 How did I miss this post?! Sorry I'm late but I loved your photos! I'm hoping one day when my daughter is old enough we can do this together. You guys are so inspiring. Also, I've been looking for your specific Julbo Glacier glasses. They seem to have discontinued that model and I'm so bummed out about that.
@@friendsthathike5729 don't know if it helps, but I bought my Julbos on ebay. Maybe you'll have luck there. Hope so!
Big congrats... can’t wait to go back again! ☝🏼❤️👊🏼🍻
Do you use GPS in the dark early mornings? Also did you go through red banks?
Yes, I used a pre-downloaded map on my GPS. Yep we went through Red Banks. Looking to back again next month!
love it. now i wanna try it!
We're going again in May if you want to join us! Have you done much snow hiking?
Wow, looks pretty epic! What did you think about the TCT? I did it last month with a buddy....loved it! Hike on!
The TCT is one of my favorite backpacking trips. Though the elevation gain/loss is brutal with a full pack on, the views are completely worth it. I plan to do it again this year.
@@friendsthathike5729 haha the gains/losses were tough but for some reason I love that stuff! That's awesome you're going again...I'm assuming in the Fall and not Summer? We did the Parson's loop counter clockwise which I'd recommend bc I'd rather go up that steep section than down. Going down would be sketch with a full pack!
Hi. Can you help me get started on winter mountaineering skills? I like to climb shasta
No sure where you live but you should look into some intro to mountaineering classes. I've taken a few with Sierra Mountain Center based out of Bishop, CA. If you have never done Shasta before I would recommend going with someone who has climbed it before and knows what they're doing or signing up with a company that offers guided trips up, which I recommend. They also teach you basic mountaineering techniques on your way up. Hope that helps.

Did you leave your tent at lake Helen when you went for the summit?
We did. After summiting we came back down to Helen Lake to rest a bit, packed up our things, and headed back down to the car.
@@friendsthathike5729 thank you. Looking to do this route end of may.
@@Foxyfreedom Good luck! We'll be there in May as well, but toward the beginning.
@@friendsthathike5729 that's awesome y'all! I'm hoping to do this one in late April (27-29 ish) how do you think the weather/snow conditions will be. I'm taking a 4 season tent for sure but want to know if I can get away without snow shoes
Great... LAians keep traveling north... Soon there will be crackhouse homeless tents covering Mt Shasta... Sad 😔
You do know that Mount Shasta is climbed by people from all over the world right?
Which is irrelevant to my hilarious comment or this video but to answer your question, yes.
AWESOME GUYS MY LOVE TO YOU GUYS AMAZING 🙏💯♥️
Thanks Oscar! Much appreciated.
