Leonie sang Senta at Bayreuth in 1969 and in 1970. Alan Blyth, always a great admirer, wrote in Opera, "Musically the evening was dominated by Leonie Rysanek’s Senta. She is one of the great post-war generation of singers still active. On this kind of form, London should surely hear her Senta or Sieglinde again before it is too late. With the minimum of movement but the maximum of effect, she suggested Senta’s complete absorption in her single-minded thoughts. Her address to the picture (‘ach mochtest du, bleicher Seemann’) had the intensity and passion appropriate to the young girl’s infatuation. All would have been set at naught if she had had one of her vocally off nights. Luckily, she was in radiant, almost flawless voice, producing exquisite floated pianissimi in the Ballad and opening out with magnificent assurance at climaxes. It was an interpretation acted and sung with the whole mind, heart and body. Understandably, Donald McIntyre’s first Dutchman in German was not quite on that level of achievement. He cut an imposing figure and sang both intelligently and untiringly, but as yet he does not manage to Donald McIntyre as the Dutchman convey the inner torment of the condemned man. He was intermittently impressive in the monologue and his final farewell to Senta had the right touch of fatal desperation. This is an assumption that should be allowed to develop both here and at Covent Garden." (The 1970 performance is also available on UA-cam with production stills, and a slightly different cast and, if memory serves me, Leonie in marginally better voice in1969). The excellent photos on the video are from the production. Interestingly, though she seems good voice in 1970,, she would sing her final Senta the following summer in Vienna, just a month before her role debut as Salome.

The earliest example of Mcintyre‘s singing that I have heard & truthfully, although impressive, was much more so a few years later.
