The Whisky Trek in Switzerland ⛰ Hiking the Swiss Alps (Säntis Malt)

- Learn more about the famous Switzerland whiskey, Säntis Malt as we take a look at the Whiskey Trek in Switzerland.
➡️ When you think of Switzerland the first thing that doesn’t come to mind is it’s Whiskies.
Locher, one of the local Appenzell beer breweries, started making whisky back in 1999.
In 2010, whisky expert Jim Murray named the Appenzeller Säntis Malt “Dreifaltigkeit” European Whisky of the Year.
The single malt whisky is named after mount Säntis, the highest peak within the Alpstein mountains in Appenzell.
➡️ After successfully selling their whisky in a few mountain inns, the idea of a whisky trek was born. Barrels of whisky were carried up the mountains to the 26 inns spread throughout the Alpstein. Thanks to the different barrels used, the height and climate situation of each inn, every whisky tastes different.
When you hike up to one or more of these mountain inns, you can reward yourself with a glass of this special whisky while enjoying the amazing views.
You can also buy a small bottle (100 ml) to take home. Once you are there, you may want to ask the host, cask keeper, to show you the barrels.
Locher came up with two whisky tours that you can purchase at their shop.
There is a short tour, which includes nine bottles, or the full tour, including all 26 bottles. With the purchase you will get a voucher booklet.
At every mountain inn, you exchange one coupon for one small collector bottle at each location.
➡️ Some of the hikes are easier than others. If you are not familiar with the area, I would definitely check your planned route with the local tourist office before to make sure all paths are open and the level of difficulty is matching your current fitness level.
Find out how we got on as we tried this for ourselves in our latest video.

Thanks brother, so glad you liked it. -Jeff
So glad to you for creat this video . Thanks a lot 🌹🙏
We just returned from two weeks in Switzerland, and we finished the trip with four days of Appenzell hiking the trails. Absolutely stunning; the videos just cannot convey how absolutely stunning the landscape is. I now own nine bottles of Santis Malts and no two are anything alike.
Is it possible to download the music soundtrack so I can use it for my vacation video? That tune rang true through my head the entire time trekking and drinking the whisky.
Thanks so much for your comment. Such an awesome experience andyou said it best, no two are anything alike.
It’s been a while since and will have to do some searching on the music.
Thanks again for taking the time to comment and super awesome hearing your journey on the trek. Cheers,
-Jeff
Jeff this is a brilliant video and what an incredible experience! I'm pencilling it in the diary for this August! I'm also writing a blog post about the trek - am I ok to grab a couple of stills from the video? I'll be embedding and crediting you too of course :)
Simon Heyes - thanks and anything I can do to help let me know. I would be honored if you use some stills for whatever creative work your doing. Can’t wait to read your experience. Cheers bro, -Jeff
@@drinkdestinations Awesome thanks! Will post the link once it's live 😊
Thanks Jeff! Full post here >> adventurebagging.co.uk/adventures/hiking/switzerland-whisky-trek/
Awesome stuff mate, was this filmed in the summer? Looks pretty hot, at least down the bottom. Keep it up.
Finn Montaner thanks brotha, yeah it was mid August when we filmed. Need to do a winter addition and ski down some of these parts. Lol cheers and thanks for the support 👊🏻👊🏻-Jeff
Wow, it looks like so much fun! If only I actually drank whiskey! Now, can you tell us where to do a wine trek in Europe?
Amanda Anima Hahahaha thanks so much for the comment and it was a lot of fun. I love the outdoors!! I’m on the search for a wine trek as we speak😀😀 cheers -Jeff
@@drinkdestinations Check out Lavaux, on steep hills bordering the Lac Leman, Switzerland. Amazing wines, amazing folks and it's an UNESCO world heritage site! Food is quite good😉.
realoldschoooollover this sounds amazing and I’m going to def. check it out. Thanks. -Jeff
@@drinkdestinations I highly recomend it. We always do "winery hopping" when we're visiting our aunt down there. Ticino (southern part of Switzerland, bordering Italy) has amazing wines as well. And you're correct with your answers to the wine export questions. The 1-2% we export is already to much, we want those juices for us😂😎
Wooow a new thing on my list of things to do.. do you know if that can be combined with a snowboarding trip?
@@pietsnot7002 yes it can actually but more for trekking/ hiking
@@drinkdestinations Thanks. I have a question that dr google doesn’t seem to be able to answer me. Can you use one and the same potstill to distill different types of spirit or is it a pick your poison and stay with it type of situation?
@@pietsnot7002 short answer is.yes you can. Example peated whisky on Islay to unpeated need to be cleaned so traces of the peat won’t end up in the unpeated spirit. You will see rum and whiskey being produced on smalller scale distilleries for example on the same still but will create a production schedule that spends time only on rum and then cleaned and run barley. Hope that helps
@@drinkdestinations Nice one, thanks 🤙
Wow..looks like you going to mordor in lord of the rings.what a view...
I want an autograph of yours!!!
Jeff, If this trip didn’t solidify why your doing what your doing. Hang it up! Incredible! Did you finish more of it off camera, or truly saving rest for future fun! The tasting notes would be interesting to read about..... did the locations truly change the taste profiles and the expert thoughts that was with you, being it was his product
Keep it up!
paul ameis my man, love this comment and unfortunately we only had enough time for two days and saving the rest for fun, maybe even a give away or something interesting in the future. Great point about the tasting notes and I can personally send those to you on email if your interested. Every mountain inn I went to had its own unique taste and different barrels used to age the whisky. Port, french, American, some cognac, etc. So cool what they did and how each owner of the mountain in. Wants their own specific style. Thanks brotha and let me know if You have any other questions. -Jeff
Yeah Jeff!!!!
Saarthak yeahhhhhhhh🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻😀😀😀-Jeff
All the beerlands have a whisky potential
I LOL'd when he said nothing was officially produced before 99.
Dan Windler 😂😂😂😂
I want to collab with you. I would love to be part of your crew
Prakhar Mittal thanks brotha. I’m all for collabs and meeting new people. As long as it brings value to the people that believe in me and support my journey. 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻-Jeff
Jeff, come on mate buy some hiking shoes....the vans are stylin but not so good for hiking the Swiss alps! 😉
Hahahaha it was a bet I had with someone. If your in shape and conditioned you can hike in anything. Also the vans held up really well which was a shock😂😂
@@drinkdestinations Not sure about those shoes ballerinas wear man, but in general I am with you. I just have seen some bad ankle injuries out and about with peeps sporting sandals and such.
I invite you to visit our tequila factory in Mexico
Diego Morales I appreciate the invite and would love to learn all about tequila. Let’s chat on email. j_brad79@yahoo.com cheers. -Jeff
