    As a glider pilot, I am in agony whenever I see cumulus clouds while on the ground: I imagine myself climbing right underneath them.

    Informative video. Hey, have you ever considered a video on reading windspeed from the waves and chop? I know you have done several great videos on wind prediction and wind meters. All great! But you are out on the water, usually, you do not have access to that data and may like to have a better idea of what the conditions are right now where you are on the water. How close can you guess the wind speed just looking at the conditions? Some whitecaps show up around 10 mph wind. Are there other signs you use?

    Is the air pressure over the city a low because the warmer air is rising?

    Hey guys! Thank you for your videos, I really appreciate it. Is it totally based on your experience or you used some scientific studies? Would like to learn more about wind and clouds

    • @OurKiteLife
      @OurKiteLife  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks! It’s a combination of our experience and research. There are some studies that cover clouds and albedo - especially in climate studies. A limitation of those is that they look at a very large scale. We also based it on findings from the UK Met Office. Hope that helps!

    Thermal boost .. hmmm... why when I live only 10km from the kiteboarding spot I still can't tell what the wind's doing there! But it rained a lot this past summer, so not as many days with normal thermals.

      Until we got a wind sensor, we had little idea of how much wind there actually was 😄 and even that’s not always accurate due to doming (sensor says 9 but above that is more like 15)!

    A question for you, Toronto lake surfing folks. In case you don't dry your kite completely from a fresh lake water - any issues with mold growing on a kite in the bag? This can be also a valid question of surfing in rain and packing after.

    • @indysingh
      @indysingh 3 роки тому +1

      We always dry our kites. Either by kiting, if there is wind in the next couple of days, otherwise by hanging it out somewhere or laying it out on the lawn. Leaving a kite wet for long will ruin it. Usually the print transfers from layer to another. Not too sure about mold - have not actually seen any since most people would dry the kite one way or another.

      @@OurKiteLife I feel like the curves in the Gorge effect the wind more than anything. I can tell the quality of the wind by the clouds.... but there are areas where the weather will just stop the clouds will not go any farther... So a half a mile down the gorge it could be screaming at 40 knots and a half a mile the other way it could be just breezy. The thing is is you can never really tell where the clouds will get caught. Maybe I just don't know enough 😂😂😂

      Hood river is also a river of wind that depends (as mentioned in this video) on temperature differential over quite long distances. This blog has it very well covered: thegorgeismygym.com/forecast/

    • @collider4378
      @collider4378 3 роки тому +2

      @@Angela-un2tx That wind squeezing down the gorge is called the venturi effect. Everything OKL talked about still applies, but you have a couple added features. Because there are hills on both sides I imagine you also get cold air sinking into the valley from the shadow side in the afternoon? I used to hang glide, that effect (wonder wind) would push all the warm air up in a perfect clean lifting mass.

  • @TylerKaraszewski
    @TylerKaraszewski 3 роки тому +1

    That’s a lot of information but at least it supports my “the wind is better when it’s sunny” viewpoint, which is admittedly much less sophisticated than this video’s analysis.

    • @OurKiteLife

      That was pretty much our starting point to this video, but yeah - there are many factors involved!
