As someone who never played Shin Megami Tensei game before only atlus games i’ve played are persona 3-5 strikers tatica and unicorn overlord i’m loving the game so far 5 hrs in at lvl 11 heading towards tokyo tower on the vengeance storyline
If you own multiple consoles outside of a Nintendo switch, you're doing yourself a disservice by replaying this on the switch you have to try to play it on another device. I have a steam deck OLED and it's insane. The difference I would have played it on my Xbox series X but since I have the steam bag let me just play it there and it's just incredible. Incredible I will never go back to the Nintendo switch

I am really looking forward to the day one purchase! I bought it last night so I could pre download it and I even went as far as getting the deluxe version. (I don’t buy deluxe versions) but for Atlus games oh yeah. Im not going to get it until it goes on sale. But I am replaying SMT 4 and having a blast. It’s been about 6 years since I’ve played it. I have to say I think the 3DS was peak Atlus. Sooo many bangers
So David. As you know I've been a fan of SMT for a long time. You know me like that right? I love me SMT, I love me devil survivor. I beat the game ONCE now....and I don't care to play it again. I started vengeance for the second playthrough and I was incredibly bored. This is the WORST SMT story I have ever played, and I played Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse...that was bad. What we should be talking about is "Why was this bad?" Sure it had plenty of "member berries..." that's it. The demon haunt was an interesting concept, but it got boring fast. You could keep getting rewards from your demons over and over again. It should have been capped there should have been one conversation you have with each demon over 3-10 ranks of friendships. They should have been meaningful and interesting. That would have been better. That's just one thing though. There is one Major issue that's the problem. That is the characters. They aren't interesting. They are boring. I am interested in no one. I kept hoping Daizai, who was notably annoying, might have a twist where he became interesting. He didn't. He had a twist where he became, SPOILER ALERT, evil and still boring, END SPOILER ALERT. His whole character is "I'm a pathetic person who is completely pathetic" it is mentioned off hand by an NPC that he comes from a very rich family, but that's never shown. That's never otherwise brought up. He doesn't act like he comes from a rich family. He's not a sterotypical rich kid that you find in animes. He's just an idiot who doesn't want to be an idiot. So the Christian faction in this SMT game is shown as the worst it has ever been portrayed. It is led by a woman...of course...it is 2024 so that's obligatory now, but this isn't just any woman, but a strong independent evil woman. Neither her nor daizai show they understand the faith or even really care about the faith. If this woman was an archangel she should have been as cold and calculating as all of the archangels in previous games. This one is just an emotional mess, not intelligent at all, and worse of all just boring. Now that is focusing on just one of the 3 factions...or 3 things that are meant to be factions. It is VERY poorly done. You have your destroy the throne faction whom you have minimal interactions with and the faction consist of one man and his pet demon whom we all pretend isn't a demon because this man is supposed to want to kill all demons without exception, but she's an exception for plot reasons. So there's your one man faction. You then have your japan faction who wants Japanese gods to reign this one too is very poorly written. Another guy comes off as a villain and out of left field almost this is the choice of his faction. There are your three factions... So why did I speak the most about the "order" faction? Because that is the only faction that is even focused on in the game from start to finish. Almost nothing is said at all about the other factions. If that was due to player choice that would be fine, you would boot up your NG+ and play a different route, but it's not. Player choice means next to nothing in this game. Lets look at peak SMT. Devil Survivor 2 Record breaker. In it you have 3 main factions also, and a "hidden" 4th faction. Each faction you will spend time with and you will learn about the people in them, why they support their faction and why they oppose the other factions. Your time is also a precious resource so you need to make some choices that will deny you access to other choices. Now I wrote something much longer, but hitting comment just erased it. I had described the choices you make how the 3 main factions all had endings that people could love or hate they had merits, but none were perfect because people have different ideas it's how humans are. Since I have to rewrite this now though I'll leave it at that and skip to the most important bit. Why was Record Breaker good and SMT V is bad? Because you loved and connected to the characters in Record breaker. You actually had to spend time with each to understand their points of view and why they follow their factions. This built empathy with each and understanding with each and the endings you got were dependent on those relationships. It is through those connections that you actually cared about what ending you got. It's in part why you wanted to reach the true ending. You wanted to give them the best ending. To describe SMT V in one word would be "hollow" The protag is hollow. The factions are hollow. The endings are hollow. You don't care about the humans, the gods, the demons, any of it. Because no time is given to build the characters up. They are written very VERY bland. The protag doesn't choose whom he wants to spend time with and even if he could their personality are as blank as all the other human npcs in the game. The concept of humans having the other half of a demon was forced, contrived, poorly used, and simply empty. This game does not draw you in, it doesn't give you a reason to care, and as a fan of the genre, even as a fan of mythology and lore this game did nothing for me. I played on hard I powered up, I beat the super boss and the super duper boss, I made a nigh immortal character by the end, but the one thing I play SMT for this game didn't have. All the leveling, all of the demon fusions, all the battles. They all only serve one purpose and that is to get you from one point in a story to the next point in a story, and I played ONE ending, and I don't care about the rest. Heck I HATED the ending I chose, and what's sad is I was able to choose. I go through the whole game saying "give me order" every time" I want "God" back every time. Then I just go and do a 180 simply because I learned what the "True" ending was. That True ending sucked. "I live in a world with gods and demons with heaven and hell, and I can even reshape it to be something better so lets give the world complete and total nihilism" Yes Nihilism the most wonderful faith of all. That's the kind of hope we all dream of. Anyway. All of the past SMTs were better, this was the worst. I really have been wanting to play a 3D version of an SMT game, and this is what they make me pay for...I know you must shill for it since this is a sponsored video and Atlus is one of our favorite companies, but now I have to be skeptical of future games because they provided something this bland, this mediocre. I won't label this game as "trash" It's just empty. It's far beneath what I expect from an SMT game.
as someone who started with P5 and later played 4 I'd argue that you shouldn't start from the most "friendly" game but move chronologically since it's easy to move from 4 and 5 but very difficult to go from 5 to 4 and I imagine it's the same with SMT. once you get used to certain QOL changes it's very hard to play a game without them so my recommandation is start from 3 and move forward(since 1 and 2 aren't available in english anyway)
But the combat of 1 and 2 are completely different than SMTIII IV and V so be prepared to slog through them even though they have amazing stories. Only play SMTI and SMTII when you know you've fallen in love with the world of SMT
Do not I repeat, DO NOT play or replay this game on The Switch if you have another console. Played the original on Switch, and it was good, but playing this new version on my PS5 is night and day better.
What i really hate on these Atlus games, and makes me consider to buy a game on release, is that i KNOW that in 1 or 2 years, comes a better version. This makes me think, they release an Alpha version, to get money, to finish the game. Bought SMT5 on release, and don't think i buy it a 2nd time. If they at least would have an option for lets say, upgrade the old version to new version for 20$ or something like that. But 60$ for a 1.5 Version? na, hate that. Really hyped for Metaphor RePhantasio, but i know it will the same there. Buy it know, and have to buy an upgraded version in 2-3 years.

I've played 8 hours of the original on Switch. Love the music and battles, not too big on the open world. Yesterday I started Vengeance on PS5. Should I just play Vengeance or should I finish the original first?
I would like to see a review talking about the cannon of Creation ( the original smt v ) just to see if there are new demons there, or at least new skills, errors fixed and so on... I think I would play first that route before the main dish ( the cannon of vengeance )
Playing on PC at the moment. You wouldn't think 60, 120 and uncapped frame rates would matter in this game but they really make all the transversal feel that much better. All the new content and QoL stuff is great. My only issue thus far is that the Cadavers Hollow and World of Shadows introduction FMVs are using the Switch version and it was very noticeable. I get that these scenes are short and one and done per playthrough but it just hurts when the rest of game is so polished. On Switch I doubt it would be an issue though. I played the original on Switch with about 150hrs to clear all the routes and enjoyed every second of it. Regardless of platform it's a must play.
Does the game worth 120$? I already played the first one at release Is the story really that different ? Do you have new maps or its the same? Cuz i see in every videos the same desert from the Vanilla Peak? Is Vengeance better than IV ? If not maybe i will wait for big sales Thank you
They have new maps and they have new dungeons and 80+ new OST tracks. Also if SMTIV or SMTV:V is better than the other is entirely subjective. How would you know that if you haven't played SMTV:V yet you wouldn't really know that just yet

Fun gameplay but man is it hard, on easy mode still insanely challenging. Maybe need to grind 5 hours it looks like to even beat first main boss

There's a demon or two new in the original CoC but you have to do some stuff in CoV to unlock them

There is an exclusive superboss in Canon of Vengence that needs you to have a save of Cannon of Creation that beat the True Neutral Ending.
