The Chernobyl disaster, which occurred on April 26, 1986, stands as the most catastrophic nuclear power plant accident in history. During a late-night safety test, a combination of inherent reactor design flaws and operator errors led to an uncontrolled reaction and a series of explosions at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Soviet Union. The blasts blew the roof off the reactor, releasing massive amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere. This event not only had immediate devastating effects on the workers and nearby residents but also left an indelible mark on the surrounding environment, creating an exclusion zone still in effect today. The disaster raised questions about the safety of nuclear power and led to changes in policy and improvements in reactor design worldwide.
