    Completely agree about the R5/R6 giving new life to lenses like the canon EF 50 1.2 L. I was blown away how much better that lens works with my R5 as opposed to my 5D iv.

    Overall a very nice video! You bring up a lot of good points to consider. I shot professionally for 35 years and retired a few years ago but still shoot for my own enjoyment. I made the switch from SLR to DSLR back with the Canon 20 D and over the years moved up to newer models. I decided to test the mirroless waters with the Canon M system which used an APS-C sensor. Tried several models and still use the M5, especially when I travel as it is so small and light and like the R can also use EF lenses. I eventually got the Canon R and love it although it's not the best for action photography. But I own a 7D MkII for those kinds of shots. I think if I get an R6 I will sell my last DSLR.
    You mentioned about how you feel your focus is better with the R system, even with EF lenses. That might be because mirrorless cameras do focus more accurately and do not need the micro adjustments that the DSLR's had where you could go into the focus menu and fine tune the focus for a particular lens on a particular body.
    You mentioned Santa Barbara and I think the girl on the cliff by the beach was shot in the SB area. I went to college at Brooks Institute way back when it was still owned by Ernest Brooks Sr.

    The only mirrorless I've ever shot with was the Nikon Z6 and I just couldn't deal with the electronic viewfinder. Until they improve on them (or perhaps the viewfinder on the z6 is relatively poor), I'll be sticking with my DSLRs.

    I had a Canon T5 in high school along with a kit lense, a 50mm 1.8, and my beloved 70-200 L f/4. I used it for fun, taking pics of nature, cars, wildlife and sports. I also did shoots for friends/family for a little side cash. It was my main hobby. Until it all got stolen from 17 year old me. I’m still pissed about it, but being 21 now, I really want to get back into photography. After watching this video, I think I’m gonna stay on the dslr side, it’s all I know and I’m okay with that, it does what I need it to do. Time to save up! I’m considering a used Canon 7D mark ii because it was my dream camera in high school. Just now starting to research Canon’s newer models to gather my options. Budget is

    Some DSLRs have silent mode, like the 6D which has 2 silent modes. It's not completely silent but goes a long way to muffle the standard shutter noise.

    I shoot Fuji for the look of the pictures, the size is a big plus as a traveller and a plane pilot.
    I shoot my Nikon DSLR's for the reliability, endurance, they are heavy and since I got big hands, they are stable in my hands and comfortable to hold. I also got a lot of F mount lenses that I don't want to sell. Actually, I'm very pleased with both :)

    The thing is: yes I’d like an R6 - but they are currently (Sept 2023) £1400 MINIMUM U.K. for a nice used copy. My beautiful 5D3 cost me £450 In really nice condition with low shutter count. I really like the optical viewfinder, single focus point shooting experience & cannot afford f1.2 lenses, so for now, it’s “Don’t panic - DSLR is great & time will eventually bring down used prices.”

    • @melvinquah9
      @melvinquah9 3 роки тому +3

      I think now that you have a RF mount body in the form of the R6; if you can afford it, just go RF mount lenses all the way as close as you can. But if you have the RF-EF smart adapter and if you can find Canon EF lenses for a good price then yes you can pop off for an EF lenses. There are just certain kinds of lenses that are not available under the Canon brand in RF mount that they do have in their EF lenses maybe.

    • @TheZachMendez
      @TheZachMendez  3 роки тому +5

      Hey there! Thanks for watching! It's such a good question. I think if you are starting out, it might be smart to invest in RF lenses if you can. That being said, they are significantly more expensive than the EF versions and not necessary for making professional work. I still shoot pretty exclusively with the EF lenses because I already own them. I do think that their performance is improved on the RF cameras and the character of the lenses is great. RF lenses will get you faster autofocus, more sharpness, and probably better stabilization with the newer camera bodies. It also might depend on a specific lens. For example, I prefer the character of the 50 EF over the 50 RF. BUT, I would probably go for the RF 70-200 for the size & stabilization aspects of it. It all depends on your work & how you shoot. Hope this helps!

    Hi Zach, thanks for the video. I'm returning to photography after a 10 year absence. Long time ago I used to use a Rebel t3i to do hiking and nature photography. Mostly just photos of my friends and wildlife / nature landscapes. I hated the rebel because it had so much trouble with AF in shady environments like the woods. However I was using a nifty 50 prime, which was cheap, and the 18-55mm kit E-series which was also cheap. I'm now getting back into photography and my budget is around $1200-1500. Should I go mirrorless or stay with dslr? Should I care about full or cropped frame? All I want is a camera that takes absolutely crystal clear, razor sharp images out in the woods, but I also want the option of doing lots of boke portraits / closeups, and the occasional family event like weddings. Could you recommend a camera for me?

    • @trojanhman8136
      @trojanhman8136 2 роки тому +1

    Thanks for your insights. A naive question: Everybody talks about the optical vs electronic viewfinder and the mirror flipping up in a DSLR, along with autofocusing mechanism. But what about live view on a DSLR?
    I’m currently using rebel t7i for mostly portrait, long exposure and astro. I use optical viewfinder only for moving subjects. For long exposure and astro, liveview is my to go anyways. And I use manual focus quite a bit. But I see the hype on mirrorless even when I was buying t7i. It still works fine but I’m in a dilemma between mirrorless and DSLR when it’s time to upgrade my camera. Also thinking about my lenses and ND filters that I already own.

    • @TheZachMendez
      @TheZachMendez  3 роки тому +1

      Hi there! Lots of good questions here. A lot of it is up to preference. Some people just prefer DSLRs and thats totally valid. I think mirrorless cameras have benefits like silent shooting, size/weight, autofocus accuracy. And as far as EVF vs live view, I think that the native feeling of the mirrorless camera might provide an improved experience? I could be wrong on that. I switched to mirrorless slowly. I only recently started investing in some RF lenses and still shoot with my EF lenses. Hope this helps & thanks for watching!

    That being said, I'm a novice photographer with a tight budget, so I'm thinking between Canon 90D (DSLR) and Canon RP (Mirrorless). Which one would you recommend?
    I love the digital viewfinder because you can preview your final product directly in your viewfinder, but I'm afraid that Canon RP would be a bad investment because of it's low price, compared to R6 and R5.

    Hi all,
    I've been using EOS 1100D for almost 4 years without any issues. A couple of days back I shot a few pictures, and took the memory card out of the camera to copy the photos in my laptop. On putting the card back in the camera, the LCD did not power up. But I am able to view settings like shutter speed, aperture, ISO from the viewfinder.
    So, I tried to take a picture with it. On this point, the camera takes the mirror up, waits a while, and then the viewfinder shows a blinking "err" message.
    No error codes shown. Just a blinking "err" message in the viewfinder.
    Also, LCD does not power up. No matter what I do.
    Here is the complete list of issues:
    1. LCD does not power up.
    2. Camera lets me shoot only one picture. But the mirror locks up for a while, and viewfinder shows blinking err
    3. Memory card has no pictures after taking the photo.
    4. Autofocus is working. Able to pop the built-in flash with the button.
    5. Once the "err" starts blinking, nothing works. Not even autofocus.
    6. Only way to stop "err" message is to remove the battery and reinsert once again.
    Here's what I did till now in order to get it working (but didn't solve the issue):
    1. Take the battery out. Charge it completely. Reinsert it.
    2. Take the memory card out. Format it from laptop. Reinsert it.
    3. Start the camera without memory card. Still the LCD doesn't power up. Doesn't solve the blinking err message.
    4. Cleaned the Lens and Camera contact points with a cloth. No help.
    5. Tried a different lens (Sigma 70-300mm / Canon 18-55mm). No help.
    6. Tried powering up the camera without lens. Still no luck.
    7. Tried a battery from same camera model (borrowed from my friend). No luck.
    Does any one encounter issue like this with Canon?
    Does anyone know how to solve this issue?
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks!

    I'm consdering buying a camera, but I know absolutely nothing about DSLR's or Mirrorless, I'll mainly use it to photograph animals and vacation stuff, I'd imagine that you'd want a silent camera for that photograping animals in the wild, what do you think? I understand what I want to shoot can affect what camera/lenses I should get. I’m definitely more of an action photographer/landscape. Reason I stopped was because family/friends would want me to shoot their events/profiles and it sadly drove me insane because I could never satisfy their wants.
      I love taking pictures for me mostly. Reason I love photography is because I can capture a moment or scene that others wouldn’t typically see as beautiful. It’s my way of capturing that moment and being able to show how I view the world

    My Canon SL2 can shoot with or without the mirror. I am so used to the mirror and viewfinder that I still shoot that way. Live View is like shooting mirrorless. It did come in handy for moon photos, on a tripod and using a wireless remote shutter.

    Im considering buying a mirrorless camera for my dental practice, I take dental clinical photos, but I underexpose the picture and use a flash. My doubt is, if the EVF shows the real exposure, will it look completely black or will the flash fire and look as the final photo? Is there a way to use the EVF as an optical view finder?

    live view or silent shutter didnt work? They can make them smaller through the distance from frontglass and sensor. But not better per ce.
    Ever send the 50mm 1.2 and the 5dmk4 to be adjusted? Because the af has the whole gimmicks that the dslr doesnt have. But it will be only as quick on point, as the dslr was, as she always used a phase detect af on a seperate sensor and the mirrorless dual pixel af, only means that those phase detector ( x or line form or double cross formed pixel) are now build into the sensor itself or give the pixel double duty. Ss, no it wont be quicker it has a contrast af as safety net (what makes it slower but more accurate and makes the adjusting the lense to the body irrelevant).But your 50mm 1.2 adjjusted would bring the exact same BQ and sharpness as the RF lense. Its the same glass only shrinked a bit in the rf. As the 5dmk4 has 10,4 more mp it will with the right glass make sharper and with more details pictures than the r6 with 20mp.
    Dont get me wrong, the r6 is a pretty fine camera, i only dont like, when another pretty fine camera get minus points, when they arent really there. I use both a dslr (90d at the moment, i dont need full frame and i like that i can use lighter glass on it), and a fuji xt4. I like the ovf of the dslr and the grip and the direct buttons of the 90d and what i can get out of the 32mp sensor.
    I like the xt4 for the dials and style you operate it, the smaller form, the colour science and the fuji film simulations and specially because of the IBIS.
    R6 pros: AF modi (face etc.), electronic only shutter, smaller, more fps, newer sensor. a dial more and IBIS
