I am a regular on your channel. I really like the info and perspective you provide. I'm in my encore career as a small group tour operator based in Canada (TravelMaven) and Kruger is one of my most popular destinations. I'd like to add that for those on a tight budget, there are high-value safari experiences available for about half what you paid. You got a great deal on your luxury safari, but for families with several kids, booking a lodge outside the park or private reserves and driving a few kilometres into Kruger Park each day for safaris can also be an amazing experience.
My wife and I did Victoria Falls from the Livingstone Resort a few years back and did the river ride up the Zambezi then an overnight safari in Chobe park. Your video reminded us of what a great experience that was. Highly recommend both this trip and your channel.
Wow- What an amazing time!!! Thank you so much for putting together such a comprehensive detail of everything! Loved watching your video (as always). Loved seeing the elephants drinking out of the pool too.
Wonderful video and tips as always! We just wrapped up 3 days of a self drive at Kruger and then splurged on 3 days at Mala Mala. For independent travelers, self driving is really a nice option and chances are you will see all the animals (other than lions and leopards) at the pace you like to go. And then the splurge got us very close to leopards - on my bucket list for a long, long time!!
This is on our bucket list as well, just have to save up for it. We are budgeting everything to allow us to travel in our retirement. Thanks for your tips on how to do this on your own.
Great video! I read your blog post first and it was excellent. You really spell out all the details and it gives me confidence that my friend and I could do this ourselves, too, following your recommendations.
Thanks for the suggestion. We are on a long cruise now and very difficult to produce with slow internet. Happy journeys, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
John and Bev, a great and informative video. Thank you! It will be nice if you can talk about how you connect the safari trip with Victoria fall visit in the next video.
We probably aren't doing a Victoria Falls video at this time. We continued our trip from Hoedspruit back to Johannesburg for the night and then we took Airlink to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. We stayed at Pamarah Lodge, and it was through them that we arranged a pick up at the airport. We used their lovely receptionists to book visits to Botswana and for the dinner cruise. The owners, Phil & Mornette, were very helpful booking anything we needed. They helped us realize that we could walk across the border to see the falls on the Zambia side and come back for the Zimbabwe side in the afternoon. They were wonderful in helping us at every turn. Their link is in our blog article and I would suggest you reach out with questions. We didn't pre-plan our trip and it worked out great for us to just let them do it when we arrived. We'd suggest you do a bit more planning, so reaching out for questions is probably best. retirementtravelers.com/ten-important-things-diy-african-safari-kruger John & Bev
April! Got it. Will go next year. Can't wait. Mucho Thanks! Checking out your website and safari companion guide right now. Will you have another video from Africa?
Couldn’t wait to watch:) Question friends: we’re finally heading to Ireland. Yay for us!! I get to see what my mother got to see:) Do we need more than 24 hours in Dublin? We’re from Colo & like the out of city adventures & just want to see just a couple things in Dublin. We’ll dress for cool weather. Thx to explore!
Wonderful. You could obviously spend more time in Dublin, but you could do the brewery and a few highlights in 24-hrs. Happy journeys, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Excellent information on the DIY option! We have a family safari on our bucket list and this definitely makes it seem more doable than previously thought. Thank you!!
Hey you guys 😊 Wow! This looks incredible. And this video is so darn informative. I’m with you on the luxury experience. I have done my share of budget travel and had some fantastic luxury trips as well. Does that lodge have single rooms, or tents?
Thanks. It is one big area with a large tent over the entire area. Each tented area is separate. The lodge area is only for meals, relaxing, pool, etc Website article can give you more details. Happy journeys, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/

Thank you for yr insights! We just booked Airlink yesterday and glad to hear you hd a great experience. Would like to hear about yr Cape Town experience, and area to stay. ❤
We loved our time in Cape Town. We stayed at the Hyatt, because we can stay free with points, but Camp's Bay or the Waterfront area in town are nice places to stay. Happy journeys, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
a few thoughts...going to just ONE park in an area, while saving money, is like just going to one city in the US. After flying 30+ hours, spend more on having a private guide. Can't emphasize this enough. Also, once in country, having a tour company handle the logistics of flights within is super critical.
Very interested in your flight itinerary. Did you fly to CPT, then VFA, back to CPT, then to HDS, then back to CPT and then off to your next destination? Did you spend multiple days in CPT on each of those legs?
We started in Cape Town, where we spent a month in one place. We then flew to HDS on a direct flight. Then, we flew to VFA via JBN. When we left there, we flew back through JBN on our way to Reunion Island and Mauritius before returning back to Cape Town via JBN again to catch a cruise up the west coast to Portugal. We stayed in Cape Town once more for a few days. We loved Cape Town, it was fantastic; although the crime rate is very high. We didn't have any issues, but we were very careful. Hope this helps! John & Bev
Most of these "expert" travel agents have never been to Africa... well maybe one person in the office on a subsidized tour. LOL! What your doing is correct and it is a threat to travel agents as they are not pocketing "their fair share" of your money. When we lived in Central and South America, we noted that the exact same tours we were on , that we booked ourselves, cost the other people going on the same tour about double the amount.
Thanks for the video. We are planning an extended family (7 total) trip to S Africa/Capetown with a cruise from Cape town to Europe which was inspired by your trip. I'm curious about the cost of your safari. The video says you paid $500/day for the 2 of you and $1895 total for 7 days. Did i miss something since $500×7 equals more than $1895. Thank you!
Hope you have a wonderful trip. The $1895 is per person for the entire trip and the $500 was referencing for a couple on a daily basis. Sorry for the confusion. Happy journeys, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Very interesting. Hoping you will do a video after each trip as you return to states to give more details on costing. It’s so helpful to know estimates to plan
I plan on going next year. Where do you suggest staying in cape town? I am thinking of Zimbabwe instead of South Africa, Kruger park. What are your feelings about that?
Excellent. Would stay down in the waterfront area in Cape Town. We really loved Cape Town! Regarding the safaris, ideal would be to do great. Fly from Cape Town to Kruger, Kruger to Victoria Falls. Each area is a little different and great to see both. We liked the Kruger safari a little better, but Vic Falls has plenty of cool stuff to see and do. Happy journeys, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Thanks so much for this detailed information as i want to do a trip like this and it was very overwhelming trying to find information like this. Did you fly in and out of Capetown or somewhere else. To make the trip more reasonable from the states which area would you fly into as a base in Africa. I can now start planning using your information and watch for good price on airfare.
We would fly in to Cape Town and spend a few days. Hoedspruit Airport is a direct flight from Cape Town and only an hour from where the lodge is located. Happy journeys, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Keep in mind, you can fly in and out of different locations - we flew into Capetown and then out of Joburg. Booked a separate domestic flight in-between.
Are you sure you got your prices correct...for the Camp you say you paid abouts $500 per night for two, which equals $3,500 for the Camp fot 7 nights. Meanwhile the camps website lists a cost if of 95,000 ZAR for 7 nights for two = $5,100...yet your video @ the end says total cost for two including various costs is $3,650 (based on a cost per person of $1,825) ??
Yes, we just double checked our numbers against our receipt. We went through Booking.com and we received a loyalty discount because we use Booking often. Perhaps booking in advance got us the better rate or they’ve raised their rates recently. John & Bev
I just looked through the comments expecting to find this question: Were you afraid that a lion pride felt like a midnight snack of human flesh, seeing you were in a tent all be it robust glamping. Not to mention the very open safari vehicles, we would prefer an armoured vehicle.
