    Wow, what a fantastic video. The best ideal for dealing with a spouse that is a homebody is to keep communicating and don't be afraid to do some of your travels solo. My late husband was never a camper or wilderness backpacker, but I am. We started visiting the National Parks in a minivan camper and got a hotel or motel room when he needed it. Because he was an ex pat, and had worked and travelled extensively as a young man, he was not as keen on travel as I am. I have done a fair bit of solo travel and backpacking, domestically since my retirement while my husband held down the fort at home. With his sudden illness and death late last year, it lit a fire within me to do the travels we had planned and visit the places he had worked before we were married. I really miss him, but I know he is looking after me and I can sometimes feel his presence when I am traveling. We truly do not know how much time we have here on earth, so live each day like it is your last. Have no regrets. Go beyond your comfort zone. Explore, experience and learn. Pitch in where you can, and always be kind. Thank you for documenting your journey and helping others plan our own travel.

    I love these tips! I'm about 6 years away from retirement and have been dreaming of relocating to some somewhere in SE Asia and just traveling all around the region for 5+ years, exploring Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, China, South Korea, etc. When I told my wife about this dream she said, "I'm gonna miss you!"🤣 Thanks for the great vlogs and tips videos, they're very helpful!

    We met this overseas couple at Yosemite NP who would come to visit different US national parks every year. Our family also visited a lot of National Parks, National Historical Parks and Battlefields. We would plan our summer trips to align with the coming year school syllabus to provide them with field trip experiences. Go visit National Parks.

    Liked the video. I did the same as you. I have traveled to most of the national parks in my travel trailer and am now traveling internationally. I un-retired a couple of years ago and teach high school. But as soon as school is out, I'm on a trip. Last summer seven + weeks in Spain and Portugal. This summer, two months in Italy. I enjoy the life balance of having a job with a purpose, and lots of time to travel...and with a paycheck 👍.

    I've started to plan and explore new places with a group, mostly to see the tourist sections and avoid lines/scams. And when I'm at these new places, I'll take note and learn where to go and what to do the next time I'm there. And then it will be DIY travel. I have Vietnam ready to go! Next places are Cambodia and the Philippines.

    Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks. I completely agree about getting different perspectives. When we were in Iceland we took public transportation some. One time we were on the wrong bus and got lost. Once we figured that out we got off, didn't panic and discussed our different options for getting back to Reykjavik. On that same trip to Iceland we took the bus tour along the South Shore. We learned a lot about the area from the guide that we certainly would have missed had we rented a car and drove ourselves. Safe travels!!

    Six years ago we made the decision to start heading towards being full-time travelers. We'll both take our earliest full retirement from government careers. We have one 16 year old at home, once he's off to college or the military we're selling one house. We have two, one is currently a rental and I'll start getting rid of our household furniture, etc. I'll be retiring first. I found you UA-cam Channel about 4 months ago and we both enjoy and appreciate all the videos, Facebook post's etc you do. One thing we had not thought about was using cruises to travel. We're definitely going to use that option. We had planned for cruises later in our journey as we age. Our question is do you pack for formal nights, just skip them or go casual, etc? Thank you both! We're learning from you'll.

    • @RetirementTravelers
      @RetirementTravelers  Рік тому +2

      We don’t pack for formal nights. We keep one outfit each for nicer events, but definitely not formal. Everything we pack gets worn on a regular basis to fit into a single backpack. Glad you are enjoying our channel and safe travels.

    Another great video you two. I am getting excited for my upcoming trip this fall. We booked a repositioning cruise Barcelona to US, and then planned our trip backwards through Europe from there. Italy holds a special place in our hearts from our honeymoon trip, so we start there. Milan seems to always have the cheapest flights so we fly in there and then use trains, busses, and subways to get around Europe. We are even trying a sleeper car on a train this time. By the way, were you able to get tickets in advance to see the last supper. We are in Milan overnight and we were hoping to see it before we head out of the area.

    Very much appreciate your videos! I don't see any videos on Iceland so I'm thinking that's not one you've done... Yet :-) I know it's an expensive one. We're planning a trip there next year with my son. I decided to take on the planning myself but I'm curious about when you choose to do a tour excursion over exploring yourself? (Not the whole trip as a tour just an excursion). They can be expensive but not knowing all the best of hidden places to stop and see can be a con to driving into a particular area. And then the driver doesn't get to experience as much. But I was just curious on your thoughts as I try to decide where to put the money.

We also have some family that will be meeting us there, so we will need to take that into consideration.

    Just to be sure that I understood this correctly. You mentioned that it is possible to take a cruise from the US to Europe without having to make a commitment of how/when to return to the US (i.e. a one way cruise that might be less than flying business class). Did I understand that correctly? Do you have a cruise provider suggestion?

    • @RetirementTravelers
      @RetirementTravelers  Рік тому +2

      Yes. We typically only have to prove we won’t exceed a country’s visa requirements. Cruises typically leave US in late spring and return in November. We have used Royal Caribbean, Oceania, Celebrity, and plan a Viking Ocean.

    I just started following your channel and I find it to be very motivated to travel when I retire. I'm 62 years old man and several years away from retirement but I find your tips about being a minimalist when packing to be very helpful when traveling.
    You mentioned buying quality when traveling with one week of clothes. What shoes would you recommend for your daily walks? I would think you would want them to be very comfortable as well as well made when wearing them 10 to 12 hours a day.
    I wish you all the best in your travels. Have there been any places that you visited that were scary or risky?
    I would love to find someone who would like to be my companion when traveling. Would you be able to help me find someone? 😊

    I love what you are doing! I’ve been fortunate to travel considerably since leaving my career at age 55, now I’m 65. I just returned from a 7 1/2month adventure. How are you dealing with your US tax filing and what kind of US address are you currently using while traveling abroad for 2 years.

    • @RetirementTravelers
      @RetirementTravelers  Рік тому +1

      Thanks so much. Absolutely no problems with taxes. We use a mail service that provides a physical address. We learned about this system from the many RV'ers that use it during our first 2 years in an RV.

    Very good tips! Thanks! Question- When you visited the National Parks, were you able to take your late dog? We heard that dogs are not allowed…we’re interested in bringing our dog- but unsure if that’s possible.

    • @RetirementTravelers
      @RetirementTravelers  Рік тому +3

      It really depends on the park. In most of the bigger parks, dogs are not allowed on the trails. We did carry our dogs in backpacks in a few. The best one for dogs was Great Sand Dunes in Colorado. It was completely dog friendly and they LOVED it.

      I'm over 50 and often stay in hostels. Read the reviews, since some are party places while others are quieter. You'll meet interesting people, who can often give good tips on things to see and do. There's generally an option to rent a solo room, if you can't find a hostel with just a few beds per room. Try it, and I think you'll like it. Take a lock, since there's often a locker or drawer where you can lock up your pack or possessions.

    Hi guys! You mention being taken advantage of by taxi drivers. Is this common? Any locations worse than others? And what is "being taken advantage of" anyway? What I mean is, are there locations where taxis are so cheap that having them charge double isn't that bad? Or are we talking about hundreds of dollars' of overcharges? Is this question worth a video all by itself? Thanks for reading, and for all you do!

    • @RetirementTravelers
      @RetirementTravelers  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the suggestion. It seems to be much worse in the high touristy areas. We had some bad examples in Italy, where a driver tried to charge us 40 Euros for a 5 minute drive up a hill. We walked.

    Don't forget the environmental impact of all this travel, the planet is suffering because of it. Cruise ships are horrible to the environment and to the communities they visit. Google it. It's not all about us and our pleasure, be aware of the negatives. Travel slow, try not to fly much, don't buy throw away plastic drinks, locals can't process this stuff. It gets thrown out. I have traveled a lot and I started getting upset at all the garbage travelers created, unaware of their impacts.
