For pure simplicity and maximum effect, and no set-up, you can't (in my opinion) beat Jay Sanky paperclipped. But we all like new gadgets as magicians, but if it isn't broken, don't fix them.

once the card is signed can you do other things with the card, can this be the end of a routine or does the card have to go straight to the key ring?

You can do more after the card is signed! It doesn't need to go directly onto the keyring. I sometimes do an ambitious card and then end with the card to keyring.
1 thing to note is you can only show 90% of the card,.you need to hide a certain pre-prepared amount of the card.
