I live in northern CO, those passes in southern CO are some of the best riding in the state for the mid and bigger bikes. So much packed into one area!
I have ridden a lot of different motorcycles off-road. Currently ride an 1190 R and it is much smoother and more stable on rough aggressive terrain than a dirtbike. Its mass, weight and low torque prevent it from deflecting and easily stalling and plows right up and over lots of things you would never expect a bike of that size to be able to do. The obvious caveat is if you get it past 10 to 15° of lean good luck bringing it back. That’s where a dirtbike shines.
They definitely have benefits and drawbacks. My 300/500 are much smoother offroad than my big bike but I have them setup that way for a reason. Zach’s 500 shocked me with how stiff it was.
I went for the middleweight in a '21 890 R. Yes, it's twice as heavy as my old '91 KX500 (bought new), but it has plenty of power to cruise 85 all day long, and is more capable in the dirt than I am so it was perfect for me. In about 2014, I was interested in getting into ADV riding, and sat on an 1190 ADV, and though, man, this is WAY too big and heavy for the dirt. So, when the 790 then 890 came out, I thought it was perfect. It COULD be lighter still, but it is what it is.
It’s a whole different approach to what we head out and ride. But yea, doing small bike stuff on big bikes definitely makes me smile. Thanks for taking the time the time to leave a comment
That's what you call laziness, I'd rather sleep in with a bald tire than wake up early with a fresh tire change 😂 was a tight turn around heading from one trip to another with no prep time in between
@@RTRrentals I'd rather sleep in than change a tire as well. I saw you're rocking the DSports now, curious how you like them on the T7. I run them on my DR650 and for the money they have been the best performer for me, up there with the D606.
@@BadMarmot I found it be a good budget Tire for medium mileage technical trips Not the longest lasting, and not the best performance. But really good in the middle for a phenomenal value
my wife said, what have you done to your bike, coz I've modified my honda cg into a scrambler. and I said it's because of videos like this, see that I want to do that 😂 I want to go on an adventure off road 😂😂
Thank you very much, means a lot. This area has so much good stuff for either of those bikes or small stuff as well so should plan a trip out sometime.
Absolutely love this! I want to do something like this out of Moab. White rim trail, onion creek, Moki dugway, Mexican hat, lasals, bears ear. I have a million questions about bike set up and what gear you’ve packed. I’ll have to pick your brain.
Many times on those bumpy section appreciate more heavy machine (I know sounds weird but dirt bike beats you up sometimes)! Love the narration and sounds of motorcycles, great cinematography and off course Colorado and you never disappoint the viewers, you delivered very sharable piece, cheers V!
Just switching up how I do them to keep myself enjoying the YT stuff. It’s a fun pastime but I wasn’t enjoying it as much as before This and the last copper canyon video made me happy to put together
Travis! Nice to see another vid from you. I finally got to ride with Tyler (eveRide) at Capitol Reef last week-- maybe I'll get to ride with you some day. (It's odd because we were talking about you a couple days ago wondering how things were going.) Cheers and happy riding!
you didn't start engineer right off of 550? was pretty gnarly on big adv bikes I must admit guys I was with were like uhhh you sure lol. We did 7 passes from Lake City in a day. Cinnamon, California, Hurricane, Corkscrew, Ophir, Imogene and engineer!!
I’m not sure the name of the hill we came up. It was pretty steep with some killer switch backs. Sounds like you did a really cool loop. From where we were it was over 200 miles for that day already
I think big bikes are smoother in the rocky two track than dirt bikes because of the weight. Dirt bikes are lighter and easier to throw around not only for your body, but the rocks also throw you around more. big ADV bikes have mass and they're not affected by the chatter as much
I’m headed to Oury for a couple days of training and then a few days of free riding. Did you miss not having your 500? I’m debating on bringing both the 890 and 501. The RTR trips are really reasonably priced! I’ve done a few day rides with them and looking forward to a multi day trip this year! Great job riding and thanks for sharing the adventure, I really enjoyed watching!
I’m a pretty strong rider and can pick my T7 up over and over if needed. I love the challenge of the big bike for sure but a 500 will go so many more places. If there’s a lot of different stuff to ride, taking the 500 is definitely the best choice as it does it all.
@@michaelflores7657 yeah I agree with Travis, the 500 will for sure go anywhere you want to go, it just may not be comfortable on some of the more ADV friendly rides. If you really like the challenge of the T7 you can bring that bike only, and get through everything if you are strong rider but it will be challenging in a lot of Colorado spots. If you're not up for a butt kicking and you want more of an enjoyable relaxing ride definitely bring the 500. And hello again Mr. Flores :-)
Man, not cool how they left you at the end and did not backtrack to find you, just went to get beer. I am surprised you don't use comms, but this is why I also have a UV-5R radio with a hand mic on my vest for when out of range and lost contact.

I ride a 790R out of Snowmass Vlg & planning portions of the BDR Sun-Mon for most of this month. Solo if I have to as trying to match schedules with buddy's is a joke.
I wasn’t sure off hand and don’t have the tracks available right now. That dirt road turn off the highway just west of south fork a few miles. Find the road on a map to Paltoto and the loop should be on there.
It's heart breaking, but if you could JUST separate the politicians and politics from the Colorado country, it would be the best place in the world. But, they are coming for your ability to ride in the back country. Enjoy it while you can.
@@EverySingleSunday YOU are awake. Not WOKE. Carpe diem brother. I'm still burning up the trails on my WR250R while I still can. Then, I'm getting out of this state. (On my Harley, LOL).
Thanks for the ride.
Any time!
Dig the Adv bike content! Just as much fun to watch as your dirt bike vids. Look forward to more!
Glad you are enjoying it. I’m having a lot of fun doing these longer format videos versus just the ride along videos on the small bike.

Hahahaha
Let’s go!

Some of the best in the country. The small bike stuff is even better up here. Thanks

I really like the channel with RTR involved. Great video and information about the area. Thank you.

For offroad these are way better.
