Very nice review! More server reviews please!
Thou' this might be too hardcore for most of viewers who are looking for home-server or something similar. So maybe if you can review something like Supermicro's small 1U Superserver barebones or out of the box servers, since those are propably enough for most of us as a fileserver, pfsense router or teamspeak server or something like that.
This channel definitely needs more server videos, keep 'em coming! Also, I would also like to see some Icy Dock / iStarUSA / Lian Li hot-swap bay device reviews as those are pretty hard to come by.
Thanks for telling me about the bios performance setting at the end. Useful info.
This is great. I sure would love to see more server vids. Also maybe do a solid server build custom something like a shared infra like dell's vrtx. I am debating a few things so keep 'em coming.
Wicked review cool to see the internal layout and thanks for running the benchmarks.
Two dishwashers? Thats actually great idea.
Lot of useful information on this video.
Another great review, fantastic camera work, great narration, overall 10/10 review guys!
I worked in Dell's CFS facility in Round Rock with a 3rd party company for a few years. I was in charge of the custom server rack integration team, The 710/720 series was one of my favorite servers to work with due to their reliability. I despised the C6000 series cloud servers though, never seemed to work right
Wow
i seriously want to see hes reasons for having two dishwashers
+Ralph Fonz GOD DAMNIT PEOPLE IM 2 SECONDS AWAY FROM BUYING TWO DISHWASHERS I NEED THESE REASONS TO JUSTIFY IT TO THE SALES PERSON. I NEED THESE REASONS PLZ
Having 2 Dishwashers removes the need for loading the clean dishes into cabinets. One DW is labeled as clean and you put the dirty dishes into the other DW. Then after the dirty DW goes through the wash cycle, it is labeled as clean and the other DW is labeled as dirty. Saves a lot of work loading dishes.
Saad Husain THANK YOU!!!
i forgot he had kids
Double buffering
Love the videos. I've been wanting to learn about servers for some time now, but I don't even know where to start.
OMG I have a surface RT! I am waiting for that full video of the teaser at the end! Can't wait!
So glad you guys are trying this sort of content out. It's really helpful to get a seasoned professional's opinion on this stuff rather than a salesman.
Please keep doing reviews about servers and other enterprise level stuff.
You have the perfect fuckin' voice for reviews and talk shows. Lower, smooth, and light. Keep this shit up
Very good video. Would have like more videos about servers and server components. It would be nice to have a more in depth video on redundant PSU's and the pros and cons of them.
What an awesome setup, would love to see more of this, I just bought a used R710 for labbing purposes. Just achieved my MCSA with it and am headed for MCSE private cloud. Was the idrac in two flavors on this one too? I had to pay an extra $27 for the idrac 6 enterprise. And my PSUs are 570w power saving but I do not believe they have a 80 plus rating. I love how Dell now includes the little pcie power connectors on yours. I have the perc 6/I Controller pcie with battery backup and have been pretty happy with it so far. I run vSphere 6.0u2 with about 19 VMs including a HA cluster(for lab only since it's not technically HA with one physical sever). 2x X5560s 32GB RAM and only a couple SAS drives. But definitely a good starting point for me. Awesome video guys really enjoyed it.
Awesome review Wendell!
I could listen to Wendell go on about servers all day :)
Great review - Great content!
More of this please!
Nice. This is why I love you guys. No other tech channel on UA-cam covers enterprise grade stuff.
I actually just bought a Poweredge 1950 III a few weeks ago to run ESXi on. I've got buyer's remorse now after seeing this, even though I would have never been able to afford this thing. ;_;
Yes .. More server stuff ! I love it. Keep up the good work. Me personally I am interested in Visualization and Storage. I do this for a living, and I am always interested in anyone knowledgeable's ideas and thought on opensource distro's. Be it Nas or more VM based. I am interested in all of it ! Thanks Wendell :)
can we get a server room tour?
how might a server benefit from a gfx? and could you technicly use this as a super redundant desktop.
Clip at the end.. mind blown.
I was wondering why the video was listed as un-watched, you fixed the audio!
This looks quite nice, but I know nothing about server-grade stuff besides being expensive but very powerful for its uses.
Great Video Wendell provides very good knowledge on hardware tech...Thats why im here for the knowledge
This might not be what you guys tend to do, but it'd be really awesome if you made some introductory videos about servers and stuff. I could probably search up the basics, but since this is an area of tech most gamers don't know about/ aren't too interesting in, it'd be really cool if you guys made an interesting video on it. Just a suggestion :)
Just installed one of these at my University. Awesome.
Wouldn't some part of the RAM overheat since the heatsink for the cpu is almost touching it?
Another Enterprise review :)
I love reviews on Enterprise/Commercial Grade products. Mostly because they're very cheap about 3 years later on eBay. I'd rather get a 3 year old HP Elitebook for $400 that was worth $2,000 three years ago than to get a new $350 Laptop from Walmart. Though I haven't seen cheap hand-me-down servers from eBay that are only 3 years old, but it's good to be in the know!
Im in tech training, and i havnt learned about servers much yet. Will this run a mine craft server and let me execute the server?
Wendell I love your videos your voice is so relaxing!
price and tests link is broken
2 years in I'm still loving my R720, rock solid reliability! Though the 2Ghz 8C CPUs are showing their age when I try to run certain work loads that favor higher clocked cores vs more of them.
That loop at 5:20 haha
Great video guys
Awesome tek, always wanted to know how servers worked.
Please make more Server videos!!
Just wondering, isn't this something for TekEnterprise instead of Tek Syndicate? Or is it just posted here because of the higher sub count?
Gotta say, Dell enterprise options are pretty great, consumer, not so much...
That 8bit music at the end, more of that! :D
Surface Rt skyrim was it streaming or running x86 emulator? I read that a new one is pretty fast called Exagear
i love these videos, i want to learn about this kind of stuff but i can't afford to just go, buy and try it out, so this is the next best thing.
R7120 is great, we use them as Vhosts in a RHELVM Cluster. They do everything well and for a reasonable price (When talking about fully supported rack machines).
Great, some enterprise hardware videos for once. Really lovin it. Sad to see the features this has compared to my poweredge 2950, haha.
Thank you for the indepth review of this Dell 720R Blade Server. It is very very informative I like that you ordered it with 128 megs of ram. one thing I did not catch was is the mem ddr3 or ddr4 just out of curiosity. FInally dell made the uefi so that any on the fly changes do not require a reboot. The clients we support buying Dell servers use the floor chassis T420 and in even the 2104 models the eufi changes require a reboot. The same with idrac as well. I emailed my idrac support rep asking if Dell is going to push a firmware update that will allow on the fly idrac and eufi changes without a reboot, still waiting for a reply. Thank you for the video very good internal review and explaination.
Do you mean 128 GB?
xAFKNinjax I idid mean gigs please excuse me.
Surface RT part at the end. It got all of my interest, I've been wanting to put my Surface 2 to work on something other than just reading manga.
I loved this video. Please more server and enterprise tech with Wendell and Logan I would love to be able to view this sort of tech without buying it first
Amazing! Can we use this as a main system to work in 3D? Rendering etc?
270 or 720
He keeps saying R270 in the beginning of the video
Can i have a compact 1000w 80+ platinum psu please.
Love your server grade stuff! If you guys can get hold of the the Asus P9A-I motherboard, please review that. I think its an awesome bigger brother version of the Asus Avoton board you already reviewed.
Thanks for doing the review! I know you're enterprise viewership isn't large but it's there. Can possibily help me.
Love the Wendell reviews
Would this server good for Vray node 3D rendering?
I really enjoy this kind of videos
Great video thanks!!
High tech with Wendell. Great video Wendell.
Dam had me at 2 dishwashers. What a documentary that would have been.
MOAR SERVER VIDEOS!!!!!
how can i find the benchmarks? I can never find anything on your website that you say is on there in the videos. very poorly organized.
Interesting & informative video!
more videos like these please.... PRETTY PLEASE.......
Is it funny about drives? I have an R710with a PERC-800 and it balks at some standard 1TB drives but my x3650m3 is fine with them. Puts me off going for another Dell.
Hey Guy I would like to know
How many battery pack in DELL SERVER R720 ?
Thanks for the video! Can't wait to start dabbing in esxi
do a vid teaching us this please.
So i need a server rack which do I get
So where can i learn about those dishwashers?
Yes! This is why I love you guys. A high end PC that isn't for gaming. Thanks for doing this Wendel. :D
Awesome review! :D Keep it up! :D
Lets say, hypothetically, I had a lot of money. Could I use this for something as simple as storing tons of movies and series on and use it to watch those movies around the house?
where do the SSD's go?
...,pelase make a video about best used servers for each price range...
Will it be suitable for 3D modeling and rendering?
You can put a boot SSD (although a USB would be a cheaper alternative) instead of a CD/DVD-ROM. There are "fake" DVD-roms for sale on Ebay which you can take apart and you can put your SSD in there! :D. Its pretty cool.
could i replace those fans with Noctua's?
You guys should do a video about Opterons too
you planing of making more server vidos ?? :) this one is really helpful becuse i am doing with dedicated server setup gaming server rakc servers
I have no idea what he is on about, but I need Wendel's smooth voice to lull me to sleep at night.
You said we got it under some offer , i am interested in buying one ,can you please suggest some source to buy such under cheap prices , if possible international shipping is also preffered , i live in india ,, i would be very thankfull to you if you could help me out sir ,.. thank you
So what do these Dell Power Edge Servers do? I brought 2 750 Power Edge and 1 Power Edge 1850 for only $19.50 on ebay. Can they host Websites and Domains or are they just used for home network storage like NAS?
+MrN00btroller You can do what you want with them. Install Linux and away you go. Domains are sorted out by DNS companies in data centres so you would need to edit your DNS settings, with the company you used to get it, to redirect requests to that domain to your servers
What kind of weird things happened during testing? Just curious.
can these servers be used as an extremely OP Computer with windows or something?
That two dishwasher thing probably has some merit, but a pair of full-sized machines is probably cumbersome.
I did see a setup like that in amazon's breakroom in dublin though.
God, I love when Tek uploads a new video while I'm watching some of their old videos. Hooray for new content, bitches.
Is this the server you guys moved the site to?
Guys when are you releasing the video of how to get Skyrim on that SurfaceRT? Was it just streaming?
having two dish washers is great btw
Did not expect a Wendell here but makes sense.
Not a real raid adapter without a battery backup? ZFS fixes the raid5 write hole so that's okay.
How can i set a backup disk, that will not destroy the raid, and we can rotate each day?
lol, a raid is no supplement for a backup.
Raid is Raid, leave it alone and don't take disks from it.
Backup is Backup, you do it regulary in your operating system (hopefully) with software dedicated to do backups.
Wendell the wise schooling us as usual. Thank you sir. \m/
Looks like a nice box .
Can it handle big media web?
3:19 wow, so many extension slots you see not everywhere on a server. A clear plus point for me who put many cards in servers for playing around...
#BLESSED server build!
Why does he keep saying R two seventy? It's an R seven twenty!!!
+ady7970 Because R 270 is real close to to sounding like an AMD R9 270
Thanks
How long do these things usually last with heavy usage? What breaks first?
five years, they don't break, they become useless.
Those PSUs are very impressive for the size!
I really don't understand why someone would hit thumbs down on a perfectly executed video can someone explain why you hit dislike? Everything is top notch the lighting, audio, the camera work, and Wendell's narration. Nice job TeKSyN.
