Artosis, I am 28 years old (born '96). Was introduced to Brood War through my Dad who had bought the game in the early 2000's. He played mostly single player games against bots back then, as did I. I came back to it for nostalgic purposes about 3 years ago.. learned the hot keys and how to adequately control the screen movement (without using arrow keys, as I had never used hot keys during my childhood, just used the mouse LOL). Needless to say, I am full tilt addicted at this point and play at least a couple times a week when I have time. Your Brood War channels are a daily watch for me and our senses of humor couldn't be more similar and shitty. hahaha. Just wanted to answer your question from the beginning of this cast... I enjoy the ladder the most, but I will say it was highly frustrating at first because I literally just didn't know how to adequately play it. Got absolutely FUCKED my first couple months trying to play competitively. However, I'm on the cusp of D rank these days, mostly playing high E rank as of right now. Fuck "fastest" maps... shit is for the birds. Low IQ. I do enjoy some custom 3v3/4v4 on BGH though. Can be fun. 👍 Edit: I also play Terran. Fuck zerg and fuck toss. Respectfully.
I played in a Fastest league where Brain played a couple of seasons. He destroyed all of us with a 96-1 record one season. This guy is an absolute monster on fastest. The fact that he can qualify in ASL shows how strong he is at bw.
34 years old, starcraft days are behind me. Primarily did used maps, but some standard maps with friends for 1v1's. Watching the pros though has always been a hobby =] keep it up for us tony
Back in the day I played pretty much exclusively UMS maps, with only the occasional (maybe once a month) ladder session. Back then, the sheer creativity of the UMS maps was so insane, it felt like you could play 15 different genres of game for the price of one.
Starcraft was one of my first PC games. As a teenager in early 00' we (siblings and friend) were playing campaigns later on "direct cable connection". Second computer was old laptop with no CD. To install Starcraft there, we zipped it to ~50-60 parts and moved it using floppy disks. It took like 2-3 hours. I think we played mostly Blood Bath. When I was studying around ~2010 I and my cousin were back to play, but we were playing some crazy survival maps against CPU. I think using Hamachi network. I think the name was something like "Gaijins Claustophobia". We never made it. Never tried online gaming. Now I listen to your superb casts and miss the old days, when we were 12-14 years old, I was playing Terran, my brother Zerg and my sister Protoss. However I later enjoyed playing Zerg more. Cheers from Poland
When I was a kid, "Hunters Mucho Money" was so popular, Blizzard made a sanctioned "Big Game Hunters" so that you could play that map and still earn stars/ladder points. (I'm sure you knew this part, just reviewing). It was all we ever played. And as I got older I realised it's for a fairly simple reason: it allows the game to keep going when you're at the skill level where expanding is just a bit too much "stuff to think about." Like, I'm 13 and I just want to build a base and slug it out with units. I'm nowhere in the galaxy of playing optimally, but I'm having a ton of fun and I just want those silver stars on my badge. I play those still because I'm not even trying to get good. They're fun. It's chill. The only sucky part is when someone joins in to a match who clearly understands build orders and just blows way past us in economy. But that's the hard part for balancing a game, right? How do you even balance, "you've gotta be a casual who is just going to have a fun time and you won't be steamrolling your opponents who don't even know how many SCVs to put in each patch."
Fun times is always when everyone is still learning. When dudes come in with 2 teammates rush players like an organized team, the fun is gone, game over in 5 mins. Problem is when you host a noob only game in the title, you will always attract evil dudes with 150+ apm join in and crush everyone. My chill apm is 60, that’s enough for 2v6 bots, but pvp got completely destroyed facing dudes double my apm.
I played obsessively shortly after this game came out. Now im 35 over 20 years later and just watch for the nostalgia and because you analyze the game so well.
I never really enjoyed playing SC1 base game against other players. The campaign was great but what I really enjoyed were the modded maps. I remember when the LOTR movies came out spending hours playing Helms Deep and other LOTR themed maps. Then WC3 took over it all and had way better tools for modding. We did have little tournaments with friends though and we were all pretty bad. I was the only one who really expanded before minerals were running out. They would ask how I have battle cruisers already while they have 500 cannons and a few dragoons.
Dude I love watching Brain play! Fastest is entertaining for me because you see unit interactions that just don't occur in 1v1, e.g. lots of firebats, tons of upgrades every game, wild/huge drops from all races, etc. Also, Coffee and Broodwar during my break. Thanks Arty!
Hate is a bit strong. All experts who have put their multiples of 10,000 hours of mastery into their trade hate room temperature IQ mouthbreathers, on the very beginning of their Dunning-Kreuger curve, loudly proclaiming wildly outrageous things that they know nothing about. So after the 1,001st time it happens you just give up and say "no, SHUT TF UP we're no doing this again. NO, STOP mouthbreather, shut up." Because these individuals are not arguing in good faith. They are not here to listen and learn. You can explain gently and carefully why their thoughts are wrong, and they either just will not comprehend it, or they'll say "no no no! that's not what says!" After a while you just stop indulging zero-effort blurting from randos, and your life improves. Arty has put in WORK in this area, you can hear it in his voice lmao. Compare his voice today to the first vids on this channel and call me a liar.
Brain is hands down the goat in the fastest scene. His skills are by far the best. It’s mesmerizing to watch his judgements and execution in the fastest maps and I personally think Brain is almost as good as Flash when it comes to how clean and mechanical his in-game moves are.

Back in the day I was a super strong money map player. Mopping the floor with people. But I do remember occasionally a low-money player would show up and completely humiliate me. Just show up in my base with like 1 marine and an SCV and I was completely helpless cuz the micro was just another level. Just felt unfair.
1. Lure me in to daily viewing with Flash casts. 2. Transition back into normal non Flash casts. 3. Artosis casts are already a part of my morning routine and I watch anything regardless. Bravo RT. Bravo.
hey Artosis, right as soon i stumbled into your channel, I didn't just immediately subscribe, i hit the send me every single video you make immediately mode. it's pretty cool hearing you solo casting, because I know you know tasteless did some weird stuff in his teenage years, so i don't have to deal with whatever random nonsense he feels like talking about while the game starts anyway, as far as my own BW career went, in my teenage years, in the early '00s, i had a few friends in high school and we'd all up meet up on irc with some other internet people and we'd usually play bgh, but sometimes we would play ums. it was very difficult to convince them to play regular hunters, and if for some reason we only had 4, we'd play blood bath. i was the second best player in the room, so unless the best player in the room was involved, i'd immediately get gangbanged by the enemy 4. only me and the best guy in the room would play 1v1s on lost temple, and sometimes i beat him, but he usually beat me in the late '00s, when i discovered teamliquid and iccup, i was also taking summer classes in college, and got real tight with the korean foreign exchange students, so i got to play against some legit players. so i think i might have done some invisible hand thing to spread TL to korea, because i remember what one of them said in broken english when i showed them the site. "teamliquid? OSL? MSL? really cool. we watch every game" it was also around the same time as bisu vs savior 3:0, and i got to iccup rank c because of two reasons. no one understood they're not on lan, so they can't micro the drones well enough to do savior's insane 3 hatch before pool opening, also, they aren't savior, and can't micro like him i basically played like nal-ra where in PvZ, i would just a flip a coin in my head and break out the most insane cheese you can think of, like 11/11 proxy gate in the center of the map, while they're not even bothering to scout me and just assume i'm going to FFE, so it's like nope, there's zealots backed up by a single probe so i can 2 shot your zerglings when they finally show up in your face immediately, ggwp as far as starcraft remastered went, i could barely control it at all, and what i've learned in retrospect is i suffer from a severe blood disorder that's completely shot my nerves, so i don't think i can ever play bw at the level i did ever again. my apm was lower than most people i was beating because i just didn't spam, but i got those insane 350-500 apm combat spikes just likes pros do, but now i'm pretty sure i can't play this game at all anymore
Multiplayer RTS games are way too hectic for me, so when I play BW these days, I play 1vs7 AI on BGH on slowest speed. TBH, it's more like a tower defense game than an RTS game at that point.
So I was a hardcore Use Map Settings player and later a map maker. However as time went on I did begin to observe and appreciate proper melee gameplay. That is what brings me here to your channel.
Back when Brood War first came out I used to play -Custom games like Evolution, Phantom, Tower defense, and mazes where you had to micro/solve to get a solution to get through and Fastest. I never ever played Ladder or low-income maps. Not even once despite hundreds and hundreds of hours in the game. Those custom maps were the true early brood war in my eyes.
Been playing since 98 and I've always preferred Use Map Settings since the sheer variety of game styles you can tap into is insaaaane! I think UMS is actually what made Starcraft so popular among casuals. Just like Roblox does for many folks today.
It's great to bring attention to all the great players outside of ASL/SSL. Jaedong will always be my favorite SC pro even when he isn't being the best.
Hey RT, I was introduced to sc by my dad who used to play vs bots on money maps, but I went hard into UMS maps, never really did melee all that much, but I always enjoyed watching it.
This protoss player was completely braindead, I say that as a protoss player. At the 8:00 mark, Jaedong is up 10 workers, look how much bank he is, he has so many macro hatcheries he can easily make a quick hydra army (which he does). Sure, the protoss player has more army supply but he just wasted 6 zealots that did nothing just running them in the natural and the main getting killed by the mutas, and just continually wasted units the entire game.
38 year old StarCraft vet here. I used to play only Fastest Money Map and BGH back in my teens and early 20’s. Then I fell in love with professional SC and saw all of the rich strategy and map variety that ASL/ladder-style maps have to offer. I do still play, casually but only with a close friend when he comes over against comps. Also enjoy replaying the campaign from time to time. Maybe someday I will work up the courage to queue a few matches on the ladder, but it’s been over 20 years at this point so who am I kidding really…?
Loved the custom “Test of survival” maps in addition to the usual money & fastest maps. Going from 1-3 units with 1/4 life barely hanging on, to wiping the map always gave me chills.
Some of my favourite SC memories are from playing 3v3/4v4 hunters against korean players. My friends and I (UK players) would go seek out the games, and the level of teamwork required felt off the chart compared to any western team games. A constant battle for mid from the first zealot - Felt like playing a different game almost. Would pay a lot of money to re-experience some of those games!
It would be cool to see more gimmick maps in competitive starcraft. Maybe not necessarily "Fastest" style, but maybe some maps borrowing ideas from the classic custom games like Aeon of Strife to add miniscule PVE elements. Like periodic Broodling floods to make for temporary island maps like the lava campaign level in Wings of Liberty.
yeah i dont play any more but when i did i actually usally played customs like zergling blood or bunker wars tower defense/wave maps and some cool custom made rpgs there was some incredible custom map makers. if i played a "standard style" it was bgh money maps i hated ladder
I'm not a big fastest expert, but it seems to me, that it's much easier to max on that. So the game becomes much more strategic since you have to choose the right units (the map is limited to the engagements are not really diverse) rather than on classic maps, where it's much more about mechanics and optimizations.
The mechanics required to control maxed armies while producing out of a million gateways are very serious. I think fastest is very apm-intensive, especially using spellcasters. It's strategic too, but the good strategies are fairly limited in their variety, and they are not map-dependent, since you are basically always playing the same map.
Growing up I almost always played Fastest. Pretty sure it’s just because they were so popular and recognizable in the lobby list. It’s also hard to swerve back to the “normal” maps once you’re not used to them anymore.
What's funny is that whenever I play a Fastest map or BGH, I always tend to use ladder/meta-style build orders. Obviously, the economy and timings are accelerated, so it all comes back to your build order.
Haven't played in 20 years. I don't like fastest or bgh at all. A lot of people argued with me about fastest players being better and requiring more skill, LOL! Not even close. Fastest is easier in a lot of ways and mostly because it makes the game even more macro oriented. They don't have to protect multiple locations, etc. I know that guy you played TNY. He played on usEast way back in the early days and had like 40k games played after a few years into BW haha. I beat him the one time I remember playing. I never like fastest but the only time I don't mind bgh is with what we called 'race war'. Everyone picked random then all the Terran would ally against all the zerg etc. One of my favorite games happened with that too. I was Terran with 2 others both got rushed and were practically dead but lifted cc and came to me. Ofc only chance was for me to turtle and bc and I did. One guy was in my base sharing minerals. I killed a zerg next door asap with like 7 BCS when I got them so we had 2 bases and 2 expansions basically. So once I had max BCS and my partners had stuff like one guy had 60 Marines we went to the center and ended up winning. If course because the zerg and toss players were fighting each other thinking we were dead. Toss had like 20 carriers too but with EMP we killed them. All those Marines actually wrecked the interceptors while they were fighting my BCS lol.
Played starcraft when I was a kid, but the first time i logged onto bnet was probably 2002/3 when I was around 8th grade. At that time it was fastest map only, NR 20 then to NR 10, then no rules Lol. It was tough being a fastest player back then, you'd always get flamed and made fun of for beeing "noob". The good ol days, where you take a break from fastest to play UMS classics like, "Stack cannon defense, Choose your D, Golems, Can you do 20 tricks, Sunken D, the various RPG games".
I used to despise money maps, and the... "culture" that seemed to form around then, back then. One thing that I enjoyed doing, was joining "7vs1 Comp-Stomps" that people played to "get free wins" and "have perfect records", and then announce that I was killing everyone as soon as the 5 minute grace period was past. They used to call it "BS", which was short for "Backstab", not "Bullshit". Now, these were usually piss-poor players, barely even able to execute a 4-pool, but it was still six vs one. It was pretty challenging and fun, and everyone "threatened" to skin your dogs and cats alive, speculate on the dimensions of your genitals and shit. Oh boy. Now I'm getting all nostalgic. In SC 2 I was never able to do that, since the barrier to entry was much lower, and even 2, or 3 piss-poor players would still be too much to beat.
I'm 23, playing ladder. I got uni and a job, so I'm really low on time, but I still sunk in 300 hours over the last 3 years just into the ladder. Probably 100 hours on replaying the campaign a couple times. I watched the last 5 asls or maybe even 6. I like the ladder more than use maps, because I can see a lot of content for the ladder, but the maps don't have a que nor enough players on EU so I never really gave it much of a chance
I still play , mostly bgh games and the level of skill modern bgh players have is ridiculously high sometimes. Of course you need to have balanced teams but I would say there are some really talented players out there and I've been wondering what needs to be done to get bettter. get faster improve skill. As for jaedong personally i've always found he was among the best players out there. the apm required for zerg players is insane and when I see jaedong do small groups of ling lurker defiler dark swarm and a plague all while controlling the rest of everything he has i dont know it just blows my mind. He's clearly the best
born 01 got introduced through my dad, we dont talk anymore but I would probably beat his ass in a game lmao. play sc2 broodwar customs with my friends when I can convince them to play, never played the game competitively nor can I, I play to many comp games for me to pick it up, but maybe one day I'll drop them all and pick up the game. thanks for the daily latter games their so consistently entertaining
I tried to be competitive at BW back in the days but didn't worked out, I didn't had the stamina, focus and other skills and now I know it was due to ADHD. I used to say that Starctaft ruined my life but it was ADHD really alongside society being very late in technology, online games and such making it a lonely life in general but especially if you often move from city to city
Starcraft was one of the first online game I played, the other one being Diablo 1, i was really bad, with friends we played a lot of race wars on bgh, when all start random and as you scout you ally with the same races.
I’m 31 and I use to only play money maps but transitioned to low money and iccup back in the day. I don’t play much anymore besides the occasional ums or bgh.
I don’t play anymore because not being able to move like I used to drives me crazy haha. And not enough time/not enough wrist joint strength to play 8 hours anymore 😬
RIGHT? It’s like you feel embarrassed for yourself for how bad you are when you play. Then when you lose it’s like “yeah, I should’ve, because I’m trash and I know it”
Curious if anyone who plays can answer, it seems like it was really really late for protoss to take a 3rd and also on the obs timing, is that just the match up? Were timings so late from the zealot pressure, corsair production? This game felt so slow to me and I don't know why
One thing that slowed it down was the burrowed Zergling since Protoss didn't have Observers, so you have the time added for Pylon -> Photon Cannon -> Nexus. Also, to me at least, it looked like he kept throwing away tons of minerals with all the Zealot attacks.
Brain's zealot+corsair really didn't do anything except delay himself from getting the goon count he needed to take back some map control from zerg. Jaedong blocked it perfectly and then crushed him with pure macro. Just kind of a straight-up strategic loss for protoss there
It’s kind of a catch all term for historically popular custom maps that have some combo: nearly infinite resources, resources that spawn next to your base, simplified map design, team battling (3v3 is most common), and in recent years increased game speed. It has a lot of its own unique strategies involved and some people get very good.
people who play those maps which has abundnace of minerals or 50 mineral patch on top of each other basically it simplifies the macro aspect of the game for more action edit: the map BGH he mentions refers to Big Game Hunters which are default in the library when you install the game you can check replays on yt with "BGH starcraft" or "fastmap sc"
Got you! Yeah the one time a year I might play some StarCraft that's what I play. Not really having to worry about expanding and build-orders (at my level anyway) makes it a lot more casual!

i basically played like nal-ra where in PvZ, i would just a flip a coin in my head and break out the most insane cheese you can think of, like 11/11 proxy gate in the center of the map, while they're not even bothering to scout me and just assume i'm going to FFE, so it's like nope, there's zealots backed up by a single probe so i can 2 shot your zerglings when they finally show up in your face immediately, ggwp
as far as starcraft remastered went, i could barely control it at all, and what i've learned in retrospect is i suffer from a severe blood disorder that's completely shot my nerves, so i don't think i can ever play bw at the level i did ever again. my apm was lower than most people i was beating because i just didn't spam, but i got those insane 350-500 apm combat spikes just likes pros do, but now i'm pretty sure i can't play this game at all anymore
What weird stuff did Tasteless do in his teenage years?
TLDR
Multiplayer RTS games are way too hectic for me, so when I play BW these days, I play 1vs7 AI on BGH on slowest speed. TBH, it's more like a tower defense game than an RTS game at that point.
I never played any SC1 online, I only played campaign as a kid.
Having played the fast money maps a few times I found them boring and felt they remove a lot of the early game tactics
So I was a hardcore Use Map Settings player and later a map maker. However as time went on I did begin to observe and appreciate proper melee gameplay. That is what brings me here to your channel.
Cheering for JD this S(A)SL!!
When I was young and playing I was terrified of ladder, and the custom UMS maps always seemed to have super good players. SO I never got too far.
Played Lost Temple every day. And some Bloodbath.
Playing 3v3 BGH was what I had the most fun with in SCBW!
When I used to play StarCraft in the early 00's I was really heavy into bound and evolves UMS maps. So much fun
Back when Brood War first came out I used to play
-Custom games like Evolution, Phantom, Tower defense, and mazes where you had to micro/solve to get a solution to get through
and Fastest.
I never ever played Ladder or low-income maps. Not even once despite hundreds and hundreds of hours in the game.
Those custom maps were the true early brood war in my eyes.
Who remembers SD Fast Money before fastest was around? They just had 8 minerals around the main structure.
Always love me some JD.
Now can we get a 3 way tournament between JD/BISU/FLASH while they're all in great form?
Maybe someday I will work up the courage to queue a few matches on the ladder, but it’s been over 20 years at this point so who am I kidding really…?
look up a few build orders and memorize / practice them. it will help for BGH ladder
Loved the custom “Test of survival” maps in addition to the usual money & fastest maps.
Going from 1-3 units with 1/4 life barely hanging on, to wiping the map always gave me chills.
Have always loved how you say layer instead of lair.
Nice to see Flash getting back to play Zerg.
I don't play anymore but I do enjoy watching.
Back when I was a kid in the mid 2000's, was huge into custom games, (Diplomacy, Tower Defense, etc)
Zerg is so HYPE!
Played when younger. These days I play a lot of UMS, its just simple fun
I'm too old and tired to play BW when I get to play RTS. These days I just play the very relaxing WC3 when I can play.
yeah i dont play any more but when i did i actually usally played customs like zergling blood or bunker wars tower defense/wave maps and some cool custom made rpgs there was some incredible custom map makers. if i played a "standard style" it was bgh money maps i hated ladder
I used to love UMS way back when. MTG, SCV football, ww2, etc
Money map is fun because you don't have to focus on expansion, but low money is more fun to watch
Actually, Artosis, using just the probe tip is the most efficient way to extract your vespene gas.
Lol, I ran a clan early 2000s that exclusively backstabbed these games
Actually Artosis- having an XXXL Coffee on hand IS a further optimization 😂 blessings and have a great day
Would love to see you cast some fastest!
Love seeing Jaedong in good shape. I just wish he could figure out his TvZ mid game
Spoiler: Flash won the game by using mass medic optic flare to blind every single unit from his opponent.
Every S tier protoss when they encounter an actually strong pro: Wtf I can just a-move suicide my units in over and over until I win?
Used to play as a kid but not anymore. Mostly nostalgia for me now.
Is that x x at the end the equivalent of a g g? Sometimes I see different symbols and don't know for sure if it's supposed to mean something else.
I play aoe4, but I love all rts on UA-cam. I like playing longer games, so ffa usually lasts longer. Back in the day, BGH and LT were the best.
I feel like the PvZ commentary was higher quality this time than before. RT have you been practicing your PvZ? ;)
I used to play a ton of money maps in college. I guess it was fun because the battles were bigger idk.
1998-2003 i played money maps all the time
born 01 got introduced through my dad, we dont talk anymore but I would probably beat his ass in a game lmao. play sc2 broodwar customs with my friends when I can convince them to play, never played the game competitively nor can I, I play to many comp games for me to pick it up, but maybe one day I'll drop them all and pick up the game. thanks for the daily latter games their so consistently entertaining
I tried to be competitive at BW back in the days but didn't worked out, I didn't had the stamina, focus and other skills and now I know it was due to ADHD.
I used to say that Starctaft ruined my life but it was ADHD really alongside society being very late in technology, online games and such making it a lonely life in general but especially if you often move from city to city
we used to play default maps of Satcraft in match of 5 players FFA
EMPEROR FIGHTING
Jaedoooong! Almost as good as flash! ❤❤
Then when you lose it’s like “yeah, I should’ve, because I’m trash and I know it”
This game gave me the sweats.
3rd base was indeed artosis levels of late becaues of the mass zealots.
I played this game on release and haven’t touched it in 25 years.
I like to play the BGH money map. Sometimes online with cpu is funny too.
been playing on and off since the game came out in big chunks. currently playing again, a tiny bit of ladder but mostly with my brothers.
I play on the ASL maps but only against the computer because I can't figure out the ladder.
Brain's zealot+corsair really didn't do anything except delay himself from getting the goon count he needed to take back some map control from zerg. Jaedong blocked it perfectly and then crushed him with pure macro. Just kind of a straight-up strategic loss for protoss there
IS ARty going to cast the SSL?
he already does. its on afreeca channel
@@RJB_TV TY
I have literal chills right now
Hello everyone, is the Blizzard entertainment website spoilt ? Because I cannot login to my account. Do you have any solutions for login ?
A bit lost, what's fastest / money map players?
It’s kind of a catch all term for historically popular custom maps that have some combo: nearly infinite resources, resources that spawn next to your base, simplified map design, team battling (3v3 is most common), and in recent years increased game speed. It has a lot of its own unique strategies involved and some people get very good.
people who play those maps which has abundnace of minerals or 50 mineral patch on top of each other basically it simplifies the macro aspect of the game for more action
edit: the map BGH he mentions refers to Big Game Hunters which are default in the library when you install the game you can check replays on yt with "BGH starcraft" or "fastmap sc"
Also the good fastest players, as Artosis mentioned, are often mechanically very skilled and very fast, but it’s not really the same game.
Got you! Yeah the one time a year I might play some StarCraft that's what I play. Not really having to worry about expanding and build-orders (at my level anyway) makes it a lot more casual!
These days I only play some old favorite UMS maps. Sometimes would do some team fastest and BGH. 1:1 just feels very stressful.
