  • Today we explored Jaffna, Northern Sri Lanka by bike.
Not gonna lie we checked out a local fish market on the coast then ended up spending most of our day eating all the Sri Lankan street food!
We tried jambu on the road side, ate the whole menu in a local women run restaurant then tried mutton kottu for the first time followed by some red jalebi.
Can't forget we had a super refreshing roadside orange juice as well as trying the infamous Sri Lankan wood apple.
Jaffna, Sri Lanka is an alright little place! 🇱🇰

We used to get this in south Tamil Nadu in the 90s; the fruit is very pungent. Keep the tender ones soaked in salt water for a few hours to get the most out of it. It's unpopular now and rare to get.

Hope you know, Jaffna faced the worst ethnic violence in Sri Lanka, which lead to the killing of millions of Tamils over decades....may b people there are yet to overcome...that pain...thats why they seem to be keeping to themselves...just sharing....so you know the back ground

Did you know.. There are many jambu varieties that range from rose apple, water apple and wax apple that come in different sizes and colours ranging from dark red to pinkish white, the most common is the small red variety. However, all of them have a slightly sweet watery taste.
I think you tried the Wax Jambu . The unique fruit is a beautiful bright green colour and is shaped like a bell. The fruit's snowy white flesh is crisp and refreshing like an apple and has a light, mildly sweet and flowery rose flavour.
Wood apple is one of the common names of an edible fruit from several trees. The fruit shape resembles an apple and the name wood apple is due to the fruit hard shell. Native to India, the tree is cultivated in other countries such in Pakistan, Sri-Lanka, and Bangladesh. The fruit is also known as elephant-apple, monkey fruit, or crud fruit.

Interesting that you speak to Tamil people using Tamil words. The vast majority of tourists assume that everyone in Sri Lanka speaks Sinhala, and so try to use Sinhala words with Tamil speakers as well, ignorant of the fact that they speak a completely different language.
So, thank you for doing your homework thoroughly 😊
