- Welcome to Batticaloa, Eastern Sri Lanka!
Today we explored Sri Lanka's big eastern coastal city on foot in the blazing sun!
We walked far too much to be honest and as always ate some quality Sri Lankan food.
I've gotta say Batticaloa is a lovely little city, things are super chill and the local people are dead nice.

Welcome to Sri Lanka 🇱🇰
Batticaloa City has a nickname called Land of the Singing Fish. Because some musical sounds that related to an aquatic creature had been heard near the Kallady Bridge in the Batticaloa lagoon on a full moon day
It is the trading centre for rice and coconuts from nearby plantations. It was captured by the Portuguese in 1622, by the Dutch in 1638, and by the British in 1796. In December 2004 a large tsunami triggered by an undersea earthquake near Indonesia struck Batticaloa, causing widespread death and destruction. There are ruined Portuguese and Dutch forts remaining from the colonial period.
The shrimps will be fresh and top quality because the lagoon has many shrimp farms
Those coconut spoons were traditionally used to serve curries but now they have different types and sizes to serve other things such as rice etc .
The Batticaloa Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1628 and was captured by the Dutch on 18 May 1638. Later, the fort was used by British from 1745. The fort has a structure of four bastions and is protected by the Batticaloa Lagoon on two sides and a canal on the other two sides.
St Mary’s Cathedral. was first built in 1808 by Paschal Mudaliyar but rebuilt in 1994 following the partial destruction when there were fights between local Tamils and Muslims.
Video was very nice very nice , hi 5 .

We are back in UK but your vid reminded us of the charms of Batticaloa. Thanks.😁
When did you come back. Where exact are you now???
That green thing you tried at that government food thing was kola kanda.
Clean, green little town...loved your hotel/beach/dal wada (yummy)...btw Leish has got great dance moves! 💃😄...Thanks for showing the lovely churches. God bless them & restore the church community!🙏
My hometown ❤❤❤
You are doing a big thing by visiting these regions as not many are encouraged by the government authorities and the tourist industry to visit the areas where the minorities live. Many are totally affected by the war that ended in 2009. So many needed help but the government didn’t do much to reach out. The locals are very resilient and they will come through this crisis. Make no mistakes or doubts about the will powers of them.
Do not make racial issues without proof.
Very true. The government no the local people never say not to visit these areas. Wrong information does no good. Even the colombo locals love to visit trinco and now even visiting these area. You must not give wrong information like that.
@@adamweera5111 There is ample proof. The lands that were grabbed by the forces are not given back to the truthful owners who made a living there for many decades. So many people in the community were affected. It is the other neighboring governments who are helping to put up housing that were destroyed by the Sri Lanka government. Non one paid compensation to these people to rebuild. Everything in SL is similar to an apartheid government. Give the people of these areas the freedom to develop their own lands they will show what they can do.
@@dinijay3299 What wrong information my dear??? If you walk out of Sri Lanka and see how REAL democracy works. Then welcome to the new world.ONLY AFTER AFEW YEARS IN A real DEMOCRACY YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT STAGE S L IS IN
@@adamweera5111 what kind of proof one need. Best is come outside SL and experience real Democracy. Then with a little bit of knowledge and intelligence one will know where SL is standing. The other main factor is use common sense to find truth. Every God dam thing is done in Racial lines or what? Can we call it racial harmony. Maybe it is SL style doing it by grabbing land that belongs to generations in the North, East and in the Hill country. The treatment of the plantation workers for over a century in slave trade style. Those people earned the hard currency for the tea they produced. They were totally ignored and way below human dignity. Is it because they are Tamils from India?? No citizenship for these people and their rights trampled on. Every once in a 10 years they and other minorities get attacked . Who are the ones who are doing these atrocities and in whose name??? Jayawewa. SL democracy. It needs to be mentioned. Scammers are filled in that country. Gemstone, religious, TukTuk, hotel, spice garden all this is be mentioned. There are so many scammers in these lines to cheat the innocent tourists. Many come with good hearts but experience these Scammers. That is a good advertisement for the tourism industry in that country. Think of all these. Must not be GREEDY for the money that they have earned from working hard. They want to enjoy their holiday. So let’s make sure Sri Lanka gives them a chance and make them happy so they can comeback for another holiday or tell others about it. That is he way to go about and do good business.😀😀😜👍🏾
46:19 Absolute gold! Serendipity!
"Portello" is a type of Italian soft drink that originated in the 1960s. It's known for its unique flavor, which combines orange, mandarin, and lemon. Portello is often described as a refreshing and fruity beverage, similar to orange soda but with a distinct taste. It's popular in Italy and can sometimes be found in specialty stores outside of the country.
i grew up in sri lanka..and after highschool went to UK for higher studies, now living in NZ. never been to north of sri lanka sadly cos of the war at the time. im 40, and there will be a good number of us in my generation who havent not travelled to the north, especially if living overseas

45:56 To those who want to groove to this song it’s Ilamai Idho Idho / Ilamai Etho Etho sung by SP Balasubramanyam and music by Ilayaraaja. You’ll find it on UA-cam/ Spotify etc.
Fair play to you both walking around in that heat. Nice chilled out place. Loved your hotel, you pick some nice places. Nice to see you in holiday mode Ellis. I hear strictly calling you Alicia ❤

Bloody hilarious that shackin' out in/on the street 'n shop wi' the owner! 😩😂🥳
I agree with you about UA-cam food reviews. Fed up a famous you tuber overusing words like umami. Great Sri Lanka videos really showcasing the delicious food.
What's umami mean?
Lol what's the point if No one knows what it means. 😂
Snack shop played all time classic tamil song. They play that for new year. Vibes are awesomee.
53:51 I think you should try it some place else the chilli parotta is spicy sweet and sour.in india it's an indo Chinese dish so it's like a sweet and spicy sauce in. Which the fried parotta is tossed. You should have it with some raita and coconut chutney will taste heavenly
Nice day in the heat 🥵 some good content especially the dancing at the kiosk 💃🏼
I was watching Gary Butler live from Bangkok, Songkran festival earlier today.
Colombo ,Kandy ,Baticaloa road is called A1 road, that’s why they used that name

NO 1😀✌️
hi mate , i am about to visit pasikuda beach next month, could you please tell me about pasikuda beach and hotels around there please
when they say Salmon ,what they mean in Sri Lanka is tinned fish of any sort but usually mackerel. Love the critique of celon "kade" tea. if you looked closely in that lagoon, you would find young shrimp. by the million. My friend's dad was born in batticaloa . my friend's grand dad was the rector of the methodist school in Batticaloa in the 19th century. It had a big British population like most places. I think we should go back to the old ways.
Thank you
Yay!! 🙌 Alicia has an umbrella 🌂 😊 and finally she uses it 😅

Beautiful place!
41:32 Thank you for visiting my hometown and showcasing its beauty. It's disheartening to see the extent of plastic pollution on the beach you vlogged about. Contrary to what might seem, the local community is vigilant about keeping the beach clean, organizing frequent clean-up drives. However, the sheer volume of plastic garbage washing ashore is alarming. Many of these plastics are not locally produced but are brought in by ocean currents, originating from countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, among others (found it through the labels in those plastic bottles).
This influx of plastic waste is a grave concern for the entire east coast of Sri Lanka, adversely affecting numerous beaches. Despite the efforts of local NGOs and community initiatives, the absence of significant government intervention exacerbates the issue. It's high time for collaborative action on a global scale to address this pressing environmental challenge. Once again, thank you for drawing attention to this critical issue.
Yeah it's sad I wasn't blaming the locals as I don't know myself if it's dumped there or washed up from abroad. Asia in general has a big problem with this though I've seen many people even in Sri Lanka throw litter into the ocean :(
@@EllisWR Absolutely, it's a global issue that requires collective effort to tackle. Your observation about littering in Sri Lanka is unfortunately accurate.
