Partly that, but also when supposedly left of centre parties move right ecomically-speaking. It's a pattern seen throughout Europe and Scandinavia. Its a longer fight imo, will take more than one of these two getting elected - their respective runs changed the national discourse and woke a lot of people up politically. Corbyn has had his reputation ruined, but his message is still resonating. :)

Just finished reading Bernie's new book. He's focused on making the lives of average Americans better while Trump, De Santis, and most of the GOP are fixated on xenophobia and punishing anyone who doesn't fit their preferred demographic.
Agreed!! Bernie was the most popular Presidential choice on the West coast of the US and many of us still agree with his ideas and actions helping the middle class do better and get ahead. The MAGAts arent welcome in a lot of places here too.
It's a mixed bag. The structural issue is the duopoly that in its creation divides into 1 against 1. It doesn't incentives broader solutions. Everything is reactionary counter-opposition.

Bernie, in his first few statements highlights how traditional Labour values are no longer represented by the current Labour Party. Bernies' basic questions indicate how things (Starmers 5 Mission statements) should not be taken at face value: On GDP growth, - 'Who benefits from that growth?' Lack of support for the Trade Union, - 'I don't know how you have a political party that doesn't stand with the people.' Starmer has surrounded himself with like-minded people, outlawing many on the Labour left from having a voice. Again Bernie asks how one can have a seasoned politician like JC and not give him ground. Counter arguments and positions within any party are beneficial as they bring healthy thought and balance. This is lacking in the Labour Starmer has fashioned. These are sad times indeed.

You could fit all the people who own half the world's wealth onto an airliner. In other words, a few hundred people own half the world's wealth, it's staggering and it's frightening but it's also potentially something to see as an opportunity. Gates and Buffet have made pledges to give up the vast majority of their wealth. If the other multi billionaires follow suit then there's some hope.
Bernie is also smarter, better informed and more articulate than the average U.S. politician. Bernie may not have won, but he changed our political landscape for the better with each campaign.
Well of course they have purposefully allowed the NHS to get to such a state to make a private healthcare system look like the answer. When you speak to some people they cannot comprehend why a private healthcare company would want control of public healthcare, they often cite how it won't make them any money, they seem so intellectually constipated they do not realise they can simply increase prices when people have no other choice. I really do hope people fight for the NHS, like Bernie says there may be issues but those can be solved. It does seem like it won't be under a Conservative government (they are doing this intentionally) and Labour's track record with the NHS is not great either, this Keith guy doesn't give me confidence, I have serious doubts that he will do the right thing but I would hope that if he's going to win I would hope it will be better than the buffoonery over the last few years, the bar is so low should be easy. If more Americans had a chance to hear Bernie, they would have voted for him. During the primaries in 2016 he did great considering he hardly got any national media coverage. Main $tream Media had a blackout against him. He did better in 2020 primaries but could not overcome the attacks against him. Since 2016 Bernie has inspired more people to vote and to run for local office, than any one else. Our voter turnout is sadly very low. He also helps to raise money for progressive candidates. Bernie is 81, but looks and sounds much younger.
Pay-go is not the way. Steer clear of the US model. Don't let them tell you privatization will improve the situation. It will steal public assets while providing poorer service to the majority and better service only to those who can pay.

Don’t let private money into the NHS, Major’s government pushed that agenda with PFI projects and funding and applied it to various sectors, not just the NHS. Recent events demonstrates the issues that has eventually created.
Starmer does stand for something but it doesn't have much to do with the UK. Bernie Sanders stood by the workers for 50 years. Starmer stood long enough to gain leadership of the party. Healthcare is more than a human right. It's what makes us human in the first place. A key part of being human is looking after sick or disabled people. When palaeontologists see evidence of sick individuals who have clearly been looked after then that is interpreted as a sign of growing human-ness E.g. a skeleton with a healed fractured femur. Which would be a death sentence unless the individual had been looked after and nursed back to health. Or a skull with no teeth and signs that all teeth had been lost years before the individual had died, and therefore must have been cared for. An individual with a withered arm, and so on. Caring for other people in a group is an essential part of human nature. Take that away and we stop being human.
Love this man, he got me into paying attention to politics, the way he comes across with everyone, left, right or centre, does not matter, you can always agree with him on something!

I don't agree with Sanders on every issue- particularly in the realm of foreign policy- but respect and admire him for his work on healthcare. If there's anything America can tell us, it's that we cannot allow ourselves to ape their system.

Bernie is also smarter, better informed and more articulate than the average U.S. politician. Bernie may not have won, but he changed our political landscape for the better with each campaign.
Well of course they have purposefully allowed the NHS to get to such a state to make a private healthcare system look like the answer. When you speak to some people they cannot comprehend why a private healthcare company would want control of public healthcare, they often cite how it won't make them any money, they seem so intellectually constipated they do not realise they can simply increase prices when people have no other choice.
I really do hope people fight for the NHS, like Bernie says there may be issues but those can be solved. It does seem like it won't be under a Conservative government (they are doing this intentionally) and Labour's track record with the NHS is not great either, this Keith guy doesn't give me confidence, I have serious doubts that he will do the right thing but I would hope that if he's going to win I would hope it will be better than the buffoonery over the last few years, the bar is so low should be easy.
A shame Americans couldn't recognise Bernie's common sense and fair approach.
If more Americans had a chance to hear Bernie, they would have voted for him. During the primaries in 2016 he did great considering he hardly got any national media coverage. Main $tream Media had a blackout against him. He did better in 2020 primaries but could not overcome the attacks against him. Since 2016 Bernie has inspired more people to vote and to run for local office, than any one else. Our voter turnout is sadly very low. He also helps to raise money for progressive candidates. Bernie is 81, but looks and sounds much younger.
Healthcare is a human right and we all have a right to be treated as humans.
Pay-go is not the way. Steer clear of the US model. Don't let them tell you privatization will improve the situation. It will steal public assets while providing poorer service to the majority and better service only to those who can pay.
I love Bernie, it's upsetting that LBC gets him on to talk about what the labour party needs rather than just talking to Corbyn.

Why talk to Corbyn at all? He couldn’t articulate what Labour needed when he ran the place and now he’s not even going to be a candidate at the next election.

Healthcare is more than a human right. It's what makes us human in the first place. A key part of being human is looking after sick or disabled people. When palaeontologists see evidence of sick individuals who have clearly been looked after then that is interpreted as a sign of growing human-ness
E.g. a skeleton with a healed fractured femur. Which would be a death sentence unless the individual had been looked after and nursed back to health. Or a skull with no teeth and signs that all teeth had been lost years before the individual had died, and therefore must have been cared for. An individual with a withered arm, and so on.
Caring for other people in a group is an essential part of human nature. Take that away and we stop being human.

He makes an astute point on the rise of right-wing politicians who break democratic norms. It's easy to look at that in isolation and throw up your hands and sigh at "right-wingers being right-wingers", but the support they get from voters is a symptom of a political system that's out of touch with ordinary people. I don't agree with Sanders on every issue- particularly in the realm of foreign policy- but respect and admire him for his work on healthcare. If there's anything America can tell us, it's that we cannot allow ourselves to ape their system.
I would argue he’s not bad on foreign policy. Maybe he was a little naive 30 years ago but not now. He’s just too maximalist on some domestic policies, especially when voters are considering electability.

With a GDP of 3.131 trillion and a population of 67.33 million the UK has a GDP per capita of 3.8million. Given that our insatiable consumerism is destroying the planet we don’t need growth, we need to find a sustainable balance, we have more than more than enough right now it just needs to be spread a little more fairly!
