it’s as close to have your finger on the pulse of what’s popular as one can get! i think she’s the best person to be in that position because as both the audience and group age, there’s somebody there who can keep them relevant in the long-term, ensuring their success even past this era.

@@aesovXIX it means the people behind and in the group are the same as the audience they're trying to attract- in kiss of life's case, it's young people in their late teens-20s. a target audience is who a company in any field where the goal is to make money is attempting to market towards.
This is one of the very few K-pop songs that actually sounds like Y2K because it understood what made Y2K what it is. Y2K was a phenomenon that happened because of the belief that the year 2000 would be the end of the world. Therefore, many futuristic sounds mixed with R&B and pop made that era's sound so specific, which followed it even further in the early 2000s. This comeback is just so good, and it also gives a lot of Bratz girls vibes, and I love it!
i think the reason so many groups falsely label their music as Y2K is because they don't reference actual Y2K music or artists, they just do what makes the most money and label it as Y2K to get more attention
YESS! I feel like so many groups that claim to be “y2k” are so loosely based on y2k that they still want to be based on modern trends which doesn’t really make it y2k.
yes. i’ve mentioned this on twitter but y2k is more than just a fashion trend. there’s also a whole sound associated with it.
It's a very different & refreshing approach to the Y2K sound/aesthetic. So far, a lot of groups have either leaned into the 00s punk rock aesthetic or the UK garage/soft aesthetic. Now while these releases have been great, the industry was taking too long to actually expand on Y2K or look at other aesthetics/sounds of that time (EX: where's the Timbaland-inspired songs?!).
Midas Touch was the song that finally offered us something new. Plus it was very nostalgic for those who grew up in the 90s-00s. It's reminiscent of what main pop girls like Brittney Spears, Christina Aguilera, & the PCD were putting out.
I just hope the styling for this cb reflects that too bc how are you going to have a song called Midas Touch & not wear gold?!
100% agree with Bratz girls vibes - I added this song to my Bratz playlist.
I do have some songs on the playlist that kinda fit the vibe - just to pad it out (WAVE by IVE, Super Cool by Class:y). But Midas Touch is one of the songs that definitely 100% fits the vibes (along with other songs like Spicy by aespa, OMG by Little Mix).
Just a reminder that King Midas was a tragedy, his greed/curse destroys everything he loves and later Apollo gives him the ears of a jackass for not being the best judge in a music competition between the god and a satyr. Which is why it works that they say they have the "Midas touch" specifically and suggests that they are more than mortals, thus able to handle that power. King Midas was unworthy and didn't understand the ramifications of such a power. KIOF is worthy.
Also love the references like Arachne Natty and Belle with the peacock dress, evoking Hera, Haneul turning a guy into stone like Medusa, and Julie having a shiny top shaped like butterfly wings, always surrounded by hearts, that's gotta be Psyche.
Midas touch means gold. They are gold... simple
I’m glad Korea is starting to see these girls and know the group. RM retweeted sugarcoat on his social media, jungkook followed them on TikTok I believe. And Midas touch is trending all around in Korea. They are slowly getting their and it’s great to see. They are known for the music before their personalities which is good. Tired of groups with zero vocalists and just visuals and dancing (with zero presence).

Kiof gassing themselves up on Weekly Idol pretty much confirmed my beliefs on their confidence being natural. I like this comeback period, and I'm impressed by the fandom not freaking out over them not leaning heavily into the lore this time. Imho, it just shows their versatility. Ngl...being stuck with Vegeta is only slightly better than being stuck with Perfect Cell.
I 100% agree that their confidence is real. I’ve watched a few of the variety shows they’ve gone on and you can tell they’re not afraid to be confident about themselves and their skills. They’re boisterous and incredibly candid for an idol group. A very “what you see is what you get” and I love that about them!

If I had a nickel for every time I've seen Taejiu relate a kpop girl group song to his mid 2000s schoolboi childhood activities, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't much but it's weird that it happened twice.
I actually want to thank Kiss of Life and XG personally for giving me some of my favorite songs of the past two years. It gives me hope that this particular musical niche I love will go far in the industry!
Kiss of Life actually just recently uploaded a commentary video on their Midas Touch MV and explained each of the scenes in the video! I really like the story behind the song and the overall concept tbh
To be a under 3 minutes song (and I completely hate them) they did it amazingly and I was shocked they had and intro, 3 choruses and pre-choruses, rap verse, a bridge and a little outro
For me Kiss of Life released bangers after bangers so far even their bsides slay. They are one of my ult groups already. Also love Belle and Haneul can sing really well. Julies raps sounds good and Natty is an all rounder.
Kiss of life is only getting better and better, which is awesome

KIOF is imo the best 5th gen has to offer right now. i'm so so glad their company is not putting them in a box, letting them explore different styles with girl crush. i can't wait to see what they have in store for us next.

The dedication to concept, all the late 90s/early 2000s (specifically Britney Spears) influences, the song itself and it’s incredible production, the vocals, the extravagant MV (perfection) I just can’t get enough of it…I’ve had high hopes for kiof even before they debuted and they are soaring so far above it. Really excited to see where they go. Midas Touch should act as an example to Kpop rn.
Tbh my favorite Kiof member is Vegeta. Sure he’s a center hog but like, he does it so well-
In all seriousness, they did the thing. Nobody is my favorite waking up in the morning and not wanting to do anything song tbh (that and my new creative writing song it just makes the mental juice start flowing)
See, this actually feels Y2K. It feels Christina, and Britney, and even Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC. Those were THE pop artists to be around the turn of the century (I was barely 8 though, so there may be some Disney effect bias). There’s a certain amount of over the top when I remember Y2K pop, and Midas Touch encapsulates that perfectly. That, and it’s a grown song for grown women and it’s so refreshing nowadays.
I just don’t understand what most kstans are calling Y2K. It’s not bad, but it’s not what I associate with Y2K pop. Y2K pop has bombast. What usually gets called Y2K honestly sounds like what I used to hear when I had to be on hold with our ISP mid 2000s because Comcast had god awful connection in the country.
It totally makes sense as to why someone like you wouldn't be too invested in a group like KIOF, since I feel their target demographic falls into the older teen/young adult women category. And evidently, one does not have to specifically fall into the target demographic to enjoy their music of course. Despite this I think its very telling that you still respect and applaud their success and objective music quality. Their talent goes being mere interest, and I feel they have the power to go further within the kpop sphere. Their talent and musical prowess shouldnt go unnoticed, and I'm glad you made a video even if you don't really actively listen and engage with their music. I feel many kpop enjoyers should learn from this and recognize that thier personal enjoyment of a song does not equate to its objective quality. Sometimes a song or group isnt for everyone, and not because the group and their songs are bad.

11:39 Exactly. As an older millennial I never understood the New Jeans Y2K correlation musically. Aesthetically yes- the dress exactly how I did in High School. But musically they actually remind me more of 90s R&B- groups like SWV, Total, 702, and Blaque.
i was playing midas touch when i was cleaning and my mom fr thought britney made a comeback 😭 its so early 2000s genie in a bottle esque music.
What I especially like about kiss of life is how they stand out in the industry rn with their specific vibe as you said the hypnotic Britney Spears kinda y2k which nobody else really approached like this. It kind of reminds me of how gidle brought the same kind of standing out in the industry with confidence.

KIOF does have the most consistent y2k sound. sugarcoat and nobody knows are strong examples. I looooove new jeans but the “y2k” sound people are referring to is just them making pinkpanthress dupes. Uk garage was a genre before pinkpanthress but she honestly made her own little niche and new jeans is emulating that.
KIOF just casually showing the whole industry how to do the Y2K concept properly & slaying hard while doing it. If they're from the Big 4, everybody would've lost their minds over them.
i have been a fan of KIOF since debut. I have really enjoy the quality of the music they have put out. I have been most impressed by how they perform. Every performance they have done felt as if they have been performing for a few years now. They just do not feel like a rookie group
I like this track launch because it is "sincere" the lyrics and choreo do the confident sexy together.
It isnt a enpowering sound + a sexy choreo that may goes against the lyrics contents in their narrative or pictures.
Not that empowering + sexy dosent work, but sometimes the tone and logic dosent feels "truefull".
Like a hero with long untied hair, using fliflops in their regular uniform to do hand to hand combat. Maybe a cool outfit but works against efficience of the objetive.
Newjeans music is so modern and so is their fashion, they aren't y2k lol
To me, the group who replicated y2k most authentically was G-Idle with Allergy. Both the sound, the costuming, the film references all reminded me of my childhood so well
I feel like sweet juice by PK was close to the sound you’re talking about too but the styling kinda knocked it out of truly being that vibe
Really nice video, I like your interpretation of the MV and song. The only criticism I have is that the song is too damn short, I don't think the build up for the line "You'll see I got the Midas Touch" is enough to give it that punching OMPH-feeling, and for the bridge they should've gone ham with the harmonies and vocals(and made it like 10-20 seconds longer), but regardless of that it'll definitely end up being one of my most played songs of the year!☺
Also a side comment on the creative director, it's a shame idols don't have more freedom or say in their image or identity as a group, because I'm sure these companies are just sitting on a goldmine of brilliant minds who don't get a say in their artistry😞 Of course she deserved to be in the final line-up, but at the same time knowing that she probably wouldn't have had these opportunities makes me a bit happy with the outcome😅
indeed ,these girls really reminded of an old kpop group I used to stan named "the grace", IDK why but they popped in my head during few second on the musuce video and I loved it.
When haneul was on top of the piller (sorry i can’t spell her name) I am reminded of a trip I took to Italy were there is this old castle that would put fallen enemy’s heads on sticks to scare enemy’s away.

I haven’t been into kpop for years but I decided to become a kiss of life stan. They’re so talented and continue to improve. Midas Touch is so addictive.
I love this song so much, it really scream BRATZ, but I also agree with the 3-minute song issue. I literally today went back to listen to butterfly by BTS today and when it was done, I was like "wow, the movement in that song, the progression through it was so fulfilling, captured my attention the whole way through, made me feel a range of nuanced emotions, and captured the best qualities of BTS because it had the time and diversity in itself to do so." And then I listened to MAGNETIC after and felt like I was listening to a 20 second sample, because of the jarring difference between a 4:30 song and a song less than 3 minutes. I genuinely believe KIOF could have so much more to offer with an extra rap verse, or a bridge, or something. But I'll just be praying for it in future releases
I love how despite the song being called Midas Touch, the music video makes more references to Medusa. Midas is vain and pitiful at worst, while Medusa takes an actively villainous role. Just something to think about!

I love Midas Touch, super catchy, nostalgic like you said. I however like their b side Nothing more. Very suited to their voices. I was sad there was no connected storyline like their previous releases. Bad News and Nobody Knows for example were great together. That aside I believe this group will do big things and take the road less traveled by so good for them.

I absolutely loved this song along with other 5th gen releases so far. Hopefully we can get your opinion on YoungPosse as they have a very hip-hop style and their songs are rather different than traditional Kpop music.

YES! NMixx - Dash and the whole album is a masterpiece, I love Boom's ending. I would say definitely Rescene's two releases and Midas Touch are also in the lead so far. I know we are focused on the title track but I wish you talked about the bside "Nothing" because it shows a more raw side to KIOF and is also a full English release. It goes off of the "we choose love" concept but more of in a way they choose self love rather than love from a boy.

Honestly, I kinda miss the sound from their debut album. Maybe it's because of my age, but Midas Touch doesn't really do anything for me nostalgia-wise. Don't get me wrong, it's a good song (although it's length definitely isn't doing it any favors), but all I really get from it is "Huh, sounds very 2000s. Neat." and overall feel very neutral about it. But I dunno, it could just be me being more nostalgic for late 2000s - early 2010s music lol.

HEYA comeback performance stage showed their vocals, like they gained confidence after doing half of the world tour.
Still may not be the best, but the improvement is definitely worth something.

The music video in some parts reminds me of aespa’s salty & sweet mv and the cgi makes me think of the spicy mv… contexts are completely different but just those details you’re talking about. Also not a bad thing!’ Just what came to my mind for similarities first

I feel that maybe im reaching but the girls also have some references to greek myths, belle being the queen of gods, here, because hera’s animal is the peacock, natty representing Arachne which was a great weaver that got turned into a spider as a way to get her punished by athena for saying that she was better than her (she was actually really good and athena also made her a spider ebacsue she coulnt found any mistakes in her work). Haneul being medusa with all of those stone heads around her and the snake that first appear with her. And lastly Julia being eros/cupid, the god of love and erotic love, with all the references of her being inside a heart. Maybe they werent the inspirations but it would be so cool because the name of the song is based on a greek myth.
Great song! Though my favorite release from them is still the debut EP. I also agree on the song length. I'm not a fan of this sub-3-minute song trend in general.

I totally agree about the MV oozing confidence and being overall nostalgia hit. I absolutely love it. This is something I missed in kpop. KIOF are a breath of fresh air. And on another topic, pls excuse me but WHO THE HECK said that KIOF is "too sexual"? THEM??? TOO SEXUAL????? LMFAO. Tell me you haven't watched any Jessi/AOA/Sistar/Hyolyn/Hyuna/Secret/Rania/Brown Eyed Girls/Bibi video and know jack shit about kpop without telling me. People got so used to 13 yos debuting their brains short circuit when they see young adult women feeling themselves smh.
There's a certain segment of K-pop fans that are conservative in nature that don't like anything too suggestive, even if the members are adults. I remember seeing a comment from someone who said they briefly stopped being a fan of TWICE because "Moonlight Sunrise" was too sexual(and then hopped back on for "Set Me Free").
I've watched 10 episodes when i was on the age that i immediately hated the villain because they're bad, so i can't say now if i like Vegeta or not

This song fully converted me to be a kiss of life stan, THEY ARE THE ONLY SLAY GROUP EXISTING IN THE 5TH GEN and I've been so desperate for that. They are giving us the grown woman gg fantasy that has been missing since the 2nd gen. You can feel their love and passion through their delivery and performances. Their energy feels so genuine.
Their vocals and concept is just like mama moo. Only kiss of life and babymonster have😮the best vocals and performance in this generation. Rest all are only publicity stunt. The most poor quality is of😢lessarafim. New jeans are also good but they get alot of😢publicity becoz of bts company
