Tearing Down The Roach Palace!

  • It. Is. Gone. (and there was much rejoicing!) Spoiler: I wasn't there when the main part of the house came down, so you won't get to see that. Oh, how I wish I would have been! I really wanted to see it come down! Please take a (big!) moment and keep reading...
    The gas stove actually dates from 1988, had a digital timer available as an option (probably very expensive!) and was made by Tappan for GE. I'm curious what liquid is (was?) used in the oven thermostat capillary tube and bulb. The GE service manual says only that it was "caustic". Whatever it is, it flashed into smoke (exactly like that from a fire) and dissipated almost instantly when the tube got broken. (Amazingly, the fluorescent lamp tube above the stove's console was unbroken when the tractor grabbed it.)
    When I say that the stove wouldn't bring a pot of water to the boil, I mean a large pot of water. Small ones it would, medium ones took a long time. That's been my experience with every gas stove I've ever used (one from Whirlpool and another from Maytag, both slightly newer than this one).
    Every water pipe in the Roach Palace had burst, something I discovered when I had the water service restored not long after purchase. One had to pull up a part of the kitchen floor and reach down about two feet to get at the shutoff valve. I was somewhat amazed there WAS a shutoff valve!
    Still of the impression it could be saved at the time, myself and a good friend started gutting the kitchen. During that process, I discovered newspaper used as insulation in the walls. Unfortunately, none of it was sufficiently intact to make out a date or any headlines.
    Things really went downhill when my father suggested we take the metal roof off of the kitchen to see what was under it. Part of me knew better, yet it happened anyway with no plan to repair/replace it, and that was the beginning of the end.
    Until I bought it, there were no smoke detectors anywhere in the house. I later learned the humidity would set them off! Of all the circuit breakers in the box, only about half did anything. Someone tried to wedge a Siemens two-pole breaker onto the bus bar in the Square D box...and went on to try and power a 240 volt A/C with it, to predictably successful results, I'd imagine.
    About three or four years ago, there was a rash of vandalism. Many people were affected. They got into the Roach Palace, the yard shed, some of our cars, and the new garage. (How they did that had me puzzled until I remembered the old "credit card" trick. I've since resolved this problem. Amazingly, the Roach Palace's door wouldn't yield when I tried that, which explains why they went in through a window.) They even unplugged the DVR, and then, as a way to really thumb their noise at us, plugged it back in after they left. The only real damage was to the dial glass of my Zenith 6S52 radio, which came with the palace. It could have been much worse.
    I'm not sure what happened with the deinterlacing around the 16 minute mark. Nor was I going to re-export it, after the computer spent nearly two hours on that task! You'll live.
    We have tractors (most specifically, an International Harvester 756) that could certainly have taken most if not all of the old house down. I didn't want to chance having the old house fall onto the new garage or somewhere else that it shouldn't have. I was nervous about that happening even though the people I hired have done this before.
    I wanted to save the TV antenna mast, so the Keykeeper, myself and our father all took it down. I cut the legs off with a saber saw and then we lowered it down to the ground with a rope. I'm not sure what I'll do with it. Someone approached me about wanting it for use as a concrete "drag", and I may just send it their way.
    Since the last part of this video was shot, more dirt was brought in and the lot graded further. So far, nothing has grown or sprouted.
    Everything in this video took place over about three and a half weeks in August 2021.
    Next project? Quite possibly having the trees removed from the yard. I don't know what, if anything, I'll put in place of the palace.
    Trivia: the name "Roach Palace" comes from an issue of Consumer Reports Zillions, which was a magazine they published for children. One of the restaurant reviews in it ended with words to the effect of "tune in next time, when we review the Roach Palace".

    The new siding probably only helped to trap in the moisture and make the degradation even worse.

      I'm wondering if the root cause of the moisture problems was a combination of the "foundshion" and the bare soil underneath the house

    Even though it's the end of an era for the infamous Roach Palace and it's sad to see it go, it's good that it's finally been put out of its misery and a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. It's just too bad it wasn't maintained properly by the previous owners. Man, it just disintegrated into splinters! That wood was extremely rotten. I'm definitely thinking the roach palace is from the late 1800s rather than early 1900s, now that I see it without the aluminium siding, due to the siding and trim around the windows, the general placement and size of the windows, etc... The next saga is to figure out what to do with the lot lol.

    There have been two times in my life when I can remember being dirtier than I though possible during demolition work. One was at my church fellowship hall when we demolished the chimney, and the whole thing leaned into the room and took a third of the drop ceiling with it. The other was when I helped Uxwbill demo the Roach Palace kitchen. It was epic. It must have taken me three showers to get clean from that.

    Watching this house come down and hearing a lot of the woes you had with it reminded me of a house I was renting for a year after coming home from deployment, which had similar issues with sagging floors and squirrels running amok within the walls and ceilings, along with an awful stench during the summer presumably from their nesting within. I even heard a couple of the bastards screaming at each other in the ceiling as I was trying to nap on the couch after work one day, to which I answered with the end of a broom handle jabbing furiously into the ceiling to shoo them away. It was an otherwise awesome hangout, with a two-car garage, and about as back in the woods as you could get within city limits, but my goodness, was this place past its prime. What gets me is that someone just recently bought the house from the guy I was renting from. What its fate is from here is beyond me - part of me hopes for an against-all-odds revival, part hopes for it to be put out of its misery.
    On another note, I just happened to be thinking of you the other day and decided tonight to take a peek at your channel, and I'm glad to see you're still making videos. You're one of the first channels I had ever subscribed to in the early days of UA-cam, and I was equally as intrigued in all of the older tech you dig into as I was into the car-related shenanigans. I've had opposite experiences with stoves. Love gas stoves. Never really enjoyed electric stoves. The coils never seem to lay flat, and only a couple sections of the coil make good contact with my pot. With good contact electric stoves do seem to be able to heat a pot of water to boiling a little faster.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  2 роки тому +3

      @@jordanjohnson714 I read, studied and did some asking around back when I first had trouble with this stove. A lot of people said "all the gas stoves you've ever used were cheap, low output models, better options abound and you should find one". So I went to some appliance stores, where they all said gas far outsold electric. I did see burner capacities varied depending upon which surface burner was in use, though I didn't know how or try to find out how I could equate that with performance figures from electric models.
      I have come to believe that a lot of it is what people grew up with, which of course for me was electric. (Commercial kitchens seem to be almost universally gas. I've only ever seen one commercial-grade electric stove.)
      Gas of course wins for extremely precise heat control (maybe an electric induction model would excel here also, I don't know) as compared to electric. Years ago, I was trying to make some ricotta cheese from whey previously used in the cheesemaking process, and it was then that I realized what a benefit that extremely precise heat control would be.
      Long story short, I'm willing to believe that this was just a poor introduction to gas stoves and that better ones can definitely be had that will match or beat electric options. For now, though, especially as I really like the 1971 Hotpoint, I'm going to stick with it.

    • @jordanjohnson714
      @jordanjohnson714 2 роки тому +1

      @@uxwbill I think you're right! I grew up with gas stoves most of my life so it could be that that's just what I'm used to. There are certainly ups and downs of each. I hadn't realized that gas stoves allow for more precise temperature control - I probably haven't paid close enough attention when I cook my food to notice.
      No problem with sticking to the tool you like best. It bugs me when people are adamant you're "doing it wrong" because you don't have the "right" kind of tool, whether that's for woodworking, stoves, or barbecue grills.

    Maybe some other time we all will see what is the new plans for the old place where the new house will be construed, or something else for your desire.
    I don't know that you see my video that I post to my YT channel talking about the repair of the Samsung SyncMaster 931B monitor that I changed to both used and new electrolytic capacitor and got it going again.
    Anyway, hopefully we all will see what the future is for your plan right at to the old place where Roach Palace used to be.

    Windows have to be torn out before the demolition for safety, so that way the demo crew dosen’t have to worry about getting cut up by broken glass, i’ll also be honest with you, you are literally the first person i know as of this video that likes electric stoves, i have one myself and absolutely loathe it, considering getting propane tank installed or Natural gas line run to my house and changing over to gas cooking, thats just me though🙂

    THANK YOU for taking the stove clock! With a bit of lubrication I'm sure it will run just fine. If the stove were made by GE it would surely have a Telechron movement. Seeing as the stove was made by a third party the clock is likely made by somebody else. Also AFAIK Telechron never made clocks of that style.
    Also, I couldn't help noticing the old PC case, it looks like an Enlight. I've been looking for drive mounting rails for mine.

      @eDoc2020 2 роки тому +1

      @ymxctrails Usually gears in clocks are brass or plastic. There might be some steel bits on some of the slow-spinning digits but nothing in the main gearbox where it would cause problems.

    It's always good to get rid of something once it gets to the point where you have made the transition from "I want to fix this" to "I want this gone". Usually something pretty big has to convince you of that. Sometimes it doesn't have to be that big, but in the case of an entire house...and this one in particular....this is pretty big. Glad that you got it down, and I hope there is something you can do with the land.

      My mind began to change after a good friend of mine and I gutted the kitchen. What cemented it was the joist that started to fail when my brother stood on it. Every time I tore into another part of it, the situation got worse and worse.

    I was thinking about the Palace and when you were going to demolish it and this video popped up shortly thereafter. I bet you are relieved. It's a huge liability, not to mention that you're paying taxes on a piece of property that you couldn't really use. I hate it that it was too far gone, but I've seen houses like this before where the people that lived in it until they died never did any maintenance and let it rot, though, it looks like the Roach Palace was too far gone long before then. I couldn't imagine what winters were like living in that house with no insulation for what seems like as long as the house was there.
    I bet your neighbors are pleased the house is gone.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  2 роки тому +3

      I am enormously relieved and glad that it's gone. I wasn't that concerned about someone getting into it again or getting hurt (my brother and I made that extremely difficult after the vandalism incident).
      The old man who lived there probably hadn't been doing anything for upkeep in at least ten years, and his family found trash bags piled hip deep (with trash in them) throughout most of the house. They missed the ones in the yard shed, which I found after closing the sale.
