    When it comes to set rotations- I think yugioh is past the point of that being a feasible option.
    It would require Konami to completely restructure how sets are designed, and the game's reliance on archetypes would need to change as well.
    Plus considering how much of the game's popularity ties to anime nostalgia, rotating formats makes it harder to support popular strategies like Dark Magician, Hero, Blackwing, etc.

    • @troy242621
      @troy242621 4 роки тому +4

      You can always reprint the older cards into newer sets to renew their legality, but really I'd rather just have a format that uses newer cards but banned the degenerate T1 nonsense. I don't like this competition of who can prevent the other person from playing YGO anymore.

    • @arzeenine
      @arzeenine 4 роки тому +1

    Don't have Twitter so here is my hot take:
    Making so many generic extra deck monsters makes the game boring sometimes. Because everyone is playing similar extra Decks. Like Eldlich and Adamancipator, or as we should call them Needlefiber Decks. More cards that are slightly more specific would probably make the meta more diverse and interesting because powerful Links etc would actually be played in their archetype or you need space in your combo Deck for another engine.

      Let me rephrase this:
      People playing staple cards makes the game boring because everyone uses staples.
      People are going to have strong generic cards. Just because it’s in the extra deck doesn’t make them better. Complaining for the thousandth time about decks being “needlefiber decks” is the same stupidity as complaining a deck using an engine is “x deck”. People played brilliant fusion a lot, doesn’t mean they were gem knight decks. People played Orcusts with mermaid, but the orcust cards were the main source of the power and the other cards were consistency, so they both end on the decklist’s name. Just because a deck uses a staple card/engine does not automatically make it a boring deck.

    • @goncaloferreira6429

      the generic cards problems( staples) has it´s root at the game´s base design. it also requires less effort from the developers and increases the price of said staples to terrible levels.

    I honestly don’t like the idea of yugioh having a set rotation. One of the reasons why its appealing to me is the fact that (aside from being banned or limited) they can always be used. Toeki Wilson On what? DuelingBook is alright, and probably the best simulator for IRL as it’s all manual, but it also can have some scenarios where some jank got used and now both players are wondering what to do. EDOpro can definetly feel a lot faster, but automatic dueling isn’t a very accurate way to play the game. Having a reminder every time something happens doesn’t happen in IRL yugioh. I’ll throw in Konami’s Grindy switch game which actually does a somewhat good job, except of course the grind to get your decks, then you also are playing it all in an automatic simulator (would be nice to be able to disable that in an online setting), but I do give it credit for saying things like (Your effect didn’t activate because it missed timing).

    • @ThePhantom555
      @ThePhantom555 4 роки тому

      Agreed. I recently started teaching someone how to play. Luckily for me they had a knowledge of everything up to synchro summoning. Beyond that they were completely lost but I built them a Valkyrie deck (powerful, spits out wins, doesn’t require an extra deck, cheap) and they enjoy the game as a whole.
      However if I had a person that’s NEVER played YUGIOH in any way, shape, or form I’d absolutely start them off with speed duels. Personally I think the “format” of it needs to be adjusted a bit. I built an unofficial 20 card Yusei inspired stardust/synchron speed duel using just regular yugioh cards and I think it’s pretty fun and very nostalgic of old school yugioh and also really simple to understand. There’s not enough room to play every summoning mechanic, and being limited in zones, life points, and turns really helps ease new players in.

That's as close as you're gonna get, where the MC trys out a bunch of decks, they explain deck building, combo extenders, and a lot of the decks dont even have trap cards in them. It's also a fun read, watching the MC go up against Thunder dragons, against a kid who's trying to place well in the dragon duel, and they go into further combo explination at the end of each chapter.

    "Create some kind of alternative format"
    Amen. Been saying that for a while now. It is INSANE that MTG handles this so well and yet YGO fails completely to manage it. Have a standard format, have a modern format, have a legacy/vintage format. It's really that simple. Standard is the latest stuff from the past 3 sets/boxes. Modern is basically master format yugioh with the ban list, and legacy/vintage is strictly cards up to a certain set (preferably legacy could be up to XYZ and vintage could be all sets before synchros came in). I really don't think this would be hard to implement. Modern means the current tournament scene/format is untouched and standard would be an interesting alternative. Finally for casual/nostalgia players you can simply avoid the headache of dealing with stuff you've never seen before. Literally everyone wins.

It could be that they’re just stuck in their ways but if the marketing people see that enough customers/fans want change, the might be willing to hop on it to boost sales and get more people in, especially if they’re trying to compete with other card games in the market.

    • @I2obiNtube

      @@romkin1197 Fully agree. They arguably don't have any interest. Konami's corporate approach to making money is push volume. The idea that bringing old players back in to the game in an approachable way where they can use their old cards and have fun just doesn't make sense to them. "We'll just sell speed duels to kids as the new easy to understand YGO, so no need to fix the old game". This is pretty much going to have to come from the player base at LGS tournament level. I can pretty much guarantee that if Duel Links is outselling new YGO boxes, Konami will probably eventually lose all interest in supporting the TCG in time. If you're a competitive YGO player now I would be worried at how popular Duel Links is and doubly worried that Konami has essentially released a replacement product to the TCG.

I can see why some people think straight up banning some cards could be hindering for the players but that doesnt make it "bad" if a card is just bullshit. I also stopped at pendulum because of the "walled garden" you mentioned. While I did pilot archetypes I never played them in ranked - I always used my own crafted anti-meta deck (2.7 W/L over 3yrs). Pendulums introduced additional mechanics that I could not reliably compensate for at the time so I had to abandon the pursuit. When I looked into using them myself I realized how "forced" the deck lists felt (this is the walled garden you mentioned) and was completely turned off from any and all yugioh pendulum onward.
    Keep in mind I don't even like playing with archetypes... I preferred lockdown : preventing the use of the grave, and special summons... morphing jar #2 and macro cosmos.... maybe some dyna pachy with safe zone.... yeah... now that's the stuff... • @JolanJoestar

      I think that the physical alternate formats were very much DoA given how Konami of America didn't let you play speed duels without using speed duel only cards in order to allow themselves to force you to chase a 30$ Kuriboh Card instead of picking up the rare version for 5 cents from 2 years ago. Traditional is just FTK city, so there's no fun in playing that.
      Digital alt formats, however, are extremely profitable and popular. Because that's what Duel Links actually is. A straight up different format. Fusions, Synchroes. Selective card pool. Deck restrictions with a different banlist. Different Master Rule. But it still uses the same cards, gets constant updates, constant balancing, overall a lot of dev attention.
      So it's a very mixed back condition, really. Personally I do not know what to expect out of Rush Duels but they seem to be, at their concept, targeting exactly what Paul discussed in the video. They're essentially a super simplified version of yugioh, which is much easier to get into. The anime is aimed at younger kids in order to pull them in. They're printed in separate structure decks and booster packs, allowing for less anime chaff in the main(core) sets, and more relevant archetype cards or reprints. It has potential, in theory.

    i dont think that hand traps are unfair or anything and they didnt ruin the game but hes kind of right when he says that it ruins the part of the game. the problem is that it takes the entire "poker" element that yugioh had where you could place a magic card face down and bluff if you havent got another play and i loved that part of the game. now the hand traps just take away that extra fun that yugioh had by changing the mindset from: "if they have absolutely no cards on the field then you were safe to attack and if im in trouble i could place a card face down and scare my enemy into not attacking" to: "what they have in the magic/trap zone is irrelevant if they have one or more cards in their hand and whats the point in trying to bluff by placing a magic card face down when you are automatically bluffing just by having a card in your hand".

    I kinda disagree with the Anime thing. I like the out-there save the world thing for pure escapism. It's a show that uses the card game to facilitate the forward momentum of the story and shouldn't be the be-all and end-all.
    However, I could see like a one-shot ova like that but not a full series

    Maybe it's just because I'm young and was only introduced to Yu-Gi-Oh! when it was already complicated, but I don't think these new rules turn people away. My local comic book shop holds plenty of tournaments, but it is true that they don't stock many new cards. I'd blame this on Konami doing a poor job of supplying their American market. The game has grown and I don't think the people who are interested in playing would be turned off by having to learn new rules. Most kids won't even touch the competitive scene and won't have to worry about not knowing certain stuff. Classic players drop the game because they no longer have the time to keep up and don't want to spend that time changing how they play. I'm sad that there won't be any new card type to coincide with the anime this time. Yu-Gi-Oh! should continue with what makes it unique rather than chasing sales. Konami fails to understand why people like Yu-Gi-Oh! and why they continue to play. If the game is the same 5 years from now, I'll drop it. I don't play competitively, but putting that thought in and seeing how things evolve is fun. Old Yu-Gi-Oh! is a bit boring. People dropped it because they liked the presentation of it when they were kids rather than the potential of the mechanics.

    Hot Take: As bad as Konami is the community is worse.
    Konami to me at least has proved over the last year that no matter how much good product we get for a reasonable price the secondary market will ruin it for everyone else by buying everything out. Examples: DUDE , 2019 Megatins, the legendary decks and Duelist Packs

    i think a good way to solve the problem presented at 12:00 is to make it similar to Pokemon (and actual game not the tcg) where they have different formats depending on how good the Pokemon is, for example really good Pokemon are put in overused, and some not as good Pokemon are put in underused. so you can use Pokemon in under used in both underused and overused, but you can only use Pokemon in overused in overused (Ubers would be more like trad format)
    so say meta cards can be put in overused, slightly worse cards in underused, worse cards in rarely used and so on, so newer players can play lower formats to start out, and if they can go from there, and also people who just don't want to play a format where everything's broken, they can just go to a lower format.
    also this would let a lot of really bad deck be a lot better if they are put on a much more even playing field.

    I'm glad I made it into this video! I'm the person who posted about artists not being credited.
    And honestly, I would have posted this as another hot take but I feel like it's a pretty mild one at that: The moment Yu-Gi-Oh! stopped having alternative formats be supported by Konami, they hurt the longevity of the game big time. I, for one, feel that Traditional and Unlimited are extremely lazy attempts at older formats. But if they were still supported, then people could come up with newer, more interesting formats and then Konami could adopt one of those to support, thus being able to print more cards that cater to that format and its audience and make more money off of more people due to having a wider audience.
    That's one of the strengths Magic has over Yu-Gi-Oh!: alternative formats that can rise up and be adopted by the creators of the game. (Also, Magic credits its artists and it's actually a HUGE boon. Every time a new Seb McKinnon art is revealed, the community at large gushes over it, the card doesn't even have to be good, the art carries the cards most of the time. It breathes some positivity into the player base.)

    • @Aigis31
      @Aigis31 4 роки тому

      I'm also extremely happy Konami is obviously taking steps towards having control be viable again, because Yu-Gi-Oh! feels like it always breaks that mold of "4 deck types" (those being Aggro, Control, Midrange, and Combo), where most decks that are competitively viable are combo decks, and maybe there's one or two control decks to regulate them, but midrange and aggro decks in recent memory have kind of been nonexistant?

    • @Aigis31
      @Aigis31 4 роки тому

      It's differentiating, for sure. Not necessarily a bad thing or a good thing, just different. I do feel it limits design space for competitive play though.

    • @Aigis31
      @Aigis31 4 роки тому

      Ooh also on the hand trap point: I miss the age of trap cards being relevant because the ability to bluff backrow was the best mind games Yu-Gi-Oh! has ever had, period. With hand traps it's just sorta... does my opponent have it or not? There's not any action (such as Setting a bluff card) that would make you think about the possibility of those cards existing and being a threat.

    • @Aigis31
      @Aigis31 4 роки тому

      I also haven't kept up with the game too much over the years, but it's almost comforting to see Yu-Gi-Oh! players suffering product fatigue like Magic players are.

    Few of my hot takes:
    1. Cyber Dragon Infinity pushed the game into being more proactive rather than reactive. With easy access to powerful omni-negates being a common thing for archetypes, the game changed to be more about "board control" over counterplay. Omni-negates should be a thing tied to hard to summon with lots of resource usage like Quasar or tied to slower cards like Trap Cards. Konami has backed themselves in a corner with modern power creep.
    2. Archetypes are way too homogenous now. While they still have unique gimmicks to change their overall playstyle, they always have the following: a low level searcher, a play enabler with some for inherent summoning, and a field spell and/or omni-negate effect. It makes modern archetypes extremely boring to play.
    3. We desperately need to separate casual and competitive in our ygo simulators. Sims like Ignispro, D.Nexus, and Percy, dont have ways to give players a better idea of what they are playing and that often leads to casuals whinning about unfair and competitives never getting to actually play because their opps scoop on turn 2.

      And they have a searchable continuous trap that negates effects.

    I mean, here is a thing about limiting special summons: Ressources like mana. Make cards that allow for more special summons than the limited ones. It's a win-win.

    I actually quite enjoy legacy support for older Decks, even the ones that weren't super popular like Dragunity or Charmers. The new Decks will maybe get support later, but until then legacy support and new Decks introduced!
    I 100% agree with that special Summons limiting thing. It would be horrible for the game because it limits EVERY Deck, not just the Meta ones.
    I think Pendulums didn't ruin the game, but people just weren't willing to adapt to them well like they should have. I actually love their designs and their text boxes, and I'm a pretty casual player. I also use Pendulum Engines in Decks that aren't the entire Deck, but only like a 3rd or 4th of it, although I know many people do not play them that way.
    Actually, I don't care if I have my hands on those cards because I have 3 Imperms rn and my only plans with them are to sell them. When I had a high price Ash Blossom and Ghost Ogre I sold them. I'd rather sell boring Meta cards with high price tags to get what I want and enjoy myself. I would never buy the Salamangreat Structure Deck because I couldn't sell the Ash Blossom for much money XD not even kidding.
    YES TO THE HIGH LEVEL PLAYER COMMENT! JUST YES!
    Anyone who hates New Yugioh because it's new they're dumb. However I do understand the complaints on Pendulums or Links that makes sense to me. There are also issues with the products and formats that do need to be fixed. The Tournament numbers don't actually mean much.

      Literally any game that exists will have a defined good category. There are probably a few exceptions where the majority of options work, but the majority of games don’t let you pick up whatever thing you keep in a heart shaped box to a competitive scene and win, unless you happen to really like a competitive strategy. You aren’t going to go into a competitive LOL game with a character that doesn’t fit the team comp because you like it. You won’t go to a competitive Overwatch game and play a character that doesn’t fit the team comp because you like it. And while those examples are for more team based games, I’m iffy on throwing in smash because ultimate is pretty well balanced where a really good player can perform with a really bad character.

Certain cards are printed to have specific interactions with certain scenarios dependent on when the card is printed. Often, this causes unbalanced interactions as the game changes. A great example, if anyone plays Pokémon, was the transition from Sun and Moon cards to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon cards. It was awkward when some broken cards from S&M were being abused with powerful cards from US&UM, but when the previous format rotated out, it created a completely different game. Hardcore players can play their broken cards in expanded (basically legacy) but there are way more checks and balances when a wider scope is used.

    As for the whole yugituber part. while i don't agree with the idea of over hyping a card, I DO agree that because of yugitubers, unique ideas become way too well known knowledge. look at the gizmek tech card that was first showcased at the crush card cup. It's like playing a 4-5 times as strong Monster Reborn. Although now with MR4 in place, it's a lot more fair since you can only pendulum summon 1 monster from the Extra Deck at least at a time

    I'm not fond of how YuGiOh is played nowadays, but not because of the more recent card types like Pendulum or Link, but how most duels are just a race to see who can set up and execute their OTK first. The 20 minute set up for a field wipe and OTK, even when on the winning side, takes the fun out of the match. There's no tension throughout the game or satisfaction when you pull off a particularly table-turning move or combo.
    I miss old YuGiOh, not because it was simpler, but because it felt more like a power struggle that lasted long enough to BE a struggle. Being outplayed one or two time rarely meant an immediate loss, and you felt like you were working to retake control of the duel. A good back-and-forth added tension and had both players think on their feet, and when you finally won, you felt a great level of satisfaction, like you managed to overcome something great.
    Myself and a friend tend to ignore anything from Synchro onwards, and the decks we build tend to result in more tense and fun duels. One of us pulls a decent move, then the other pulls something better to gain some steam, and it hits us hard, but then makes us look at our cards more carefully. Could we play them in such a way that we would find a way to combat the other? These are the kind of duels I miss.
    Also, I'd like to see a few more ways for older summoning methods like Fusion and Ritual to become more generally viable. Admittedly, I'm not too familiar with top-level competitive YuGiOh, but I rarely see viable decks involving Fusion or Ritual, so I'd like to see a way for these to compete a bit more

    There is a funny series from Hyde Audio Dramas on youtube, that actually writes the characters from the first 3 eras of Yugioh in more of the context we would have liked to see more of, where they act like just card players (with some anime overlap but in the context of the players. Like Jaden is a card shop geek, and Yugi literally has the heart of the cards luck that lets him pull the rarest cards in any pack he wants, and older characters have more modern decks based on their characters.) A lot of the humor and duals are pretty much how I wished the anime actually was, where similar to beyblade, the fan series makes the show feel more like its reflecting the game, realistically.)

    Speaking of hot takes; I know a guy irl who literally has a problem over people buying trading card packs and gets a mental breakdown depending on what or how many packs that person buys. He used this excuse on me to manage my money and demand that I do trades only and sell my cards on eBay even though there’s a major flaw with a couple of those things. People overprice cards during trades; fees on eBay are outrageous and support buyers 75% of the time more than Sellers without protection making you lose more money! He’s very naive and is simply talking out of his emotions and feelings without any type of consideration!

      I'd buy packs just to annoy him. That's fucking retarded.
      Plus, there are those of us who enjoy opening packs, I know I very much do

      @Sillimant the crazy thing is his reasoning behind it makes no sense! He believes packs are simply just a waste of money; that cards take up too much space! Ik because he’s literally brought up this situation to me for almost 2 years. I even have the evidence to prove it; most of the time he’s denial and doesn’t want to accept reality!

      that's not so much a hot take as much as it is one guy in your area has control issues and is taking them out on anyone he thinks he can exert his perceived expertise over
      you'll encounter those type of people damn near anywhere

    I like your take on the classic card support. It's what made me consider yugioh as a magic fan. I have nostalgia for those cards the way my older friends have nostalgia for old magic cards

    I think that Yugioh can be fixed if once per turn literally means once per turn

      @Leroy Sims these are some of the most random arguments I’ve ever seen. There is no logic between hard once per turn and the game taking skills. I don’t care about your opinion, but don’t just randomly complain about things with arguments that make no sense.

    13:19 this also applied to KOMANI's music arcade games like beatmania. Their in-house music producers are no longer given credit by their name. Instead they were refer to as BEMANI SOUND TEAM.
    For this, some people also speculated that because Komani had a merger with a pachinko company (legal gambling business), which resulted in this.

      It's not that people dont like it it's more that it's the weakest series, at least before interesting shit happens, it has no stakes at all for a bit compared to the OG series, it's like if dragon ball Z ended and then dragon ball super was a slice of life sitcom

    • @Jackson-tx5uc
      @Jackson-tx5uc 4 роки тому

      @@gamergamer7508 I get that, but the stakes are bullshit. I know it's a children's show, but come on, it's the same formula every time.
      Protagonists having a good time, bad guys appear, they show their "evil" intentions to take over the world, it's so unrealistic.
      I'm not saying it shouldn't have tension, but I would prefer something more down to earth. For example, the protagonist losing more often, and side characters making their decks constantly more powerful and competing with the protagonist, just like irl.

    THE REALISTIC ANIME IDEA IS AN AMAZING IDEA! Look at Bakuman or Gundam Build fighters. Bakuman, a manga about making manga, and build fighters taking out the life or death scenario and making it into a competition where people remote control their custom Gundam.
