Absolutely I have to give it to the people who made it for the time before things like tcgpalyer or trollandtoad or before local game shops were super prevalent for younger kids that couldn’t have their parents help all the time this video would have been fantastic for showing them how to not abuse your cards how to not act like a dingus and how to get better cards without the randomness of packs. As well as taught the basics and some minor combos of the game.

I taught my younger bro, but I didn't use starter decks to teach him lol. we literally just bought packs and construct our decks (they didn't have starter decks in our local store, but at least it was a chance to teach him how to balance the deck)

I like how they essentially fix common misconceptions that the anime created. Sure 2000 life points seems fine at first, until you learn that you can attack directly.

🤣i mean, it was fine with the rules and the cards at that time in the anime and manga. especially since attacking directly wasn't a thing, because the writer wanted the game to just be a battle of monsters at first (with trap and "magic" cards to support them)
ATK of 1400-1600 was already uncommon then. anything beyond 2000 was rare and cards with 2500-3000 were the pinnacle of monsters

I love how the show was like: "8000 LP? That'll make the duels last an eternity!"
And in real life we're like: "4000 LP? Ho do you even survive more than a turn if it's that low??"
At least they have sleeves, they already beat out the duel links commercial imo 😂

Its like im watching the anime come to life before my very eyes
I genuinely love this so much. It's oozing personality. The "How to draw manga" artstyle of the cover, the kids' acting, the super cheesy quotes like "this will level the playing field a little", breaking the 4th wall and looking at the healthbars, everything about this screams 'passion project of a couple kids from early 2000s' that you can't help but feel nostalgic about it even if you haven't seen it before.

Pre UA-cam generally had good production value because videos where made by mostly pro Videographers
This looks like it has more value than some UA-cam videos. I mean, take a look at this, it even aged like fine wine despite the game evolving so much to the point most YGO players that already know their thing would consider this cave man YGO.
I say there wasn’t necessarily a lot of money put into the graphics, most likely it was just a few guys who had a real passion and skill for designing graphics and animations.. especially considering this whole production was done by a small, third party company. despite their obvious age, they still look really nice

@@okuu_utsuho yes, it's from yugioh SEVENS anime. The mechanic as far as i understand, summoning 3 cards that can make a single big monster on the field that gains effect of all the 3 monster, and their ATK increased when they are in maximum mode (aka when all 3 cards on the field)
This summoning mechanic only exclusive to the RUSH format

I bought the videogame on the Switch and there seems to be no maximum summon.

Once again, the fans do a better job than konami, in both explaining, filming, and acting. Not nearly as cringy as that official dvd

I think it helps that when players are explaining in their own words so it sounds more natural than a scripted video that sounds static and unnatural.

After getting his butt handed to him at local game shops he was excited to finally pick on his newbie friend. Little did he know, Bradley was gonna give him a new one.
They should hire these kids again as adults teaching the newer yugioh rules with the premise that Bradley wants to go through a nostalgia trip, and Ethan is like a regular YGO competitive player or something. Same cool effects, same slow and easy to understand explanations, some old and new cheesy kind hearted rivalry.
This DVD is actually how my friend and I learned to play back in the day.

Yugioh got so damn convoluted that judges don't even know official rulings at times, also at times the game makes you go cross-eyed.

the first complex thing is rules, mainly the hidden ones, like spell speeds and stuff
and the second is you have to know your cards
THIS is nostalgia, when it hits you right in your guts! Me and my best friend always used to play yugioh after school, eat dinner together and made countless sleepovers at weekends just to play even more yugioh past over our sleep time. I just love this video!
Actually, these kind of "unofficial/unauthorized products" like strategy guides, expansion/add-ons and whatnot that compliment the said official product that it was supplementing was incredibly common back in the mid 90s and early 2000s. Back then, you will less likely to get into legal trouble from the actual owners of said IP from producing and selling these stuffs commercially not to mention the majority of people back then barely have access to the internet at home.
If there was a duel guide now, itll just be 5 minutes of one guy taking one turn and summoning his whole deck with cards that have like 5 paragraphs of descriptions on each card

I enjoyed the fact the decks came with 50 back in the day. Remove 10 cards for consistency and everyone always picked different 40 (or just exchanged cards with previously owned cards) for a different experience.
That production is actually insane, its also from 2003. Impressive! Its ahead of its time!
Wow, that was actually a great DVD. I was expecting something bad and janky, but that was really fun and good to watch. It also takes me right back to the early days of the game. I forgot about the fifty card starters, too, that was cool to see.
This was actually such a fun video! You should track down and do the other two videos it mentions on the back of the dvd, the advanced and master duelist ones!!! I gotta see how the story between Bradley and Ethan ends 👀

Forget yugioh, I would've loved to have seen a video like this when I started playing card games in general to understand the importance of sleeves, card value, and even the ability to buy singles off online sellers.
Honestly, Its a good DVD. It has a setting that works, and explains all the basics even to the formalities. The only things it really left out were fusions and rituals
Also, they had to add chains, which were belittled back then.
Furthermore, little did the kids knew about there were going to add the following mechanics:

One day, I think it would be hilarious if you tried to successfully play a game duelist kingdom style, where anything goes so long as you can come up with a good reason why it works. It would be a mixture between Yu-Gi-Oh and an RPG game

I wish I would have saw this video 18 years ago when I first got into Yu-Gi-Oh. I didn’t know anything about card sleeves, buying singles, phases, combos, even booster packs, just structure decks and a rubber band to keep them together 😂
That's pretty much all I knew as a kid as well.
Me: Meh they're just gonna teach the basics what's so crazy about that?
Them: Alright kids here's how you can buy singles off Ebay and don't forget to sleeve your cards otherwise they'll be worthless.
Now you know you gotta make an updated Yu-Gi-Oh training video for 2021... Team APS would do it justice (and make a positive impact on the community)!

I had this on vhs when I was a kid, must've watched the first half like 50 times, mostly just playing in the background while I put together these rudimentary decks with cards I just thought looked cool 😅

I miss the Yugi and Kaiba starter deck so much. I loved those days. I wish they would reprint them. So I didnt have to spend a grand to re live my childhood.
Honestly I am surprised they haven't done so yet. Especially since the recent surge in nostalgia amongst people looking for older cards and grading them. But you can always just buy the singles for cheap and rebuild those decks for nothing. Depending on rarities you want and such. But if you go for all commons you could probably build on for those for like $20-$25.

I even had those same mats from that time. Summoned skull was an Ultra rare card back then so it was hard to pull in the original packs from 2002.

Imagine taking 4 or so years people who’ve never played yugioh ever, showing each one of these old guides, and seeing how they do
This video had me through a roller coaster of emotions. Better than most duels at my locals tbh
My wife actually found a couple copies of the Advanced DVD at a pawn shop once years ago and picked them up for me. I don't know where they went, but I do know that the full videos for all three have been uploaded to UA-cam. They're surprisingly decent for the time, actually mostly accurately explaining the rules and even getting into some of the meta of the time. Granted, I think it was mostly playground meta, but they also got into stuff like old school beatdown and Exodia builds, staples like Raigeki, Feather Duster, and Jinzo. They used a lot of the jargon I remember from back in fifth grade when I played with my Dad and brother at the weekly Books A Million tournaments, constantly losing to the older kids and adults who could afford stuff like Mirror Force, Yata, and BLS, haha.
I used to watch this trilogy rented from Netflix all the time.

@@beefiestsurprise269 back in the 2000's you can rent DVD's from Netflix and they send them via mail. You can rent it as long as you want and you reseal the envelope to return the dvd. This was before streaming was even thought of.

Halfway threw the video and clearly the older methods from when I was a kid are deffinetly better than now I love the classic cards to and still use them to this day good job bringing this dvd up paul ur a good dude
The modern way is just frustrating and lackluster. I still play the old-school way, which is not impossible but difficult to keep up. Anyway, I waited 15 minutes on the second turn for this dude to set up a 1-combo K.O. It's like they don't like the back and forth duels anymore. Dude, a game that ends in 2 turns is not a fun duel; it's just a boring slaughter.
