I don’t even really see but this tutorial was so amazing I kind of want to start sewing again!
On method two (the binding that is not ragged on the back) I did the following to prevent so much thickness on the back. I cut my binding strip 5" wide and folded it in half to get a 2.5" wide strip as opposed to a 3" one. That gave me one clean edge because it was folded (I placed this edge on the back of the quilt) and one raw edge for ragging (that went on the front). I then proceeded the clip this strip on just as you did with just a little less on the back. This made two fewer layers to sew through. Worked great for me.

I’ve done something similar. Except I used a silky binding. I just sewed the outside layer of flannel with a 1/2 seam to get a small ragging effect. Then sewed a silky binding to the INSIDE layers of the quilt.

thank you. I made a queen size quilt for my son and used your binding folding in the back. it turned out fabulous. I actually did fold a second color and put it inside the front of the binding so there are two colors ragged along the inside binding. by ironing it all down together flat first, I had no problems sewing that much flannel together.
That is such a cool idea! I love the added layer in a different color. Creativity is the best!
I really like the look of that binding on the front! I’m wondering about sewing it to the back of the quilt and pulling around to the front, then sew the 1/2” seam and clip the edges. The back will look like a regular binding and only have the ragging on the front.

Or you can use a walking foot and not worry about having to lift the pressure foot because all your fabric will move smoothly together.

Thank you for your video! You make it fun to watch :) I like the ragging on the back. I imagine it helps hide any crooked stitching you or I could have. When you use an extra piece of material with your batting, is it the same flannel material you use to make the quilt? I’m thinking of using a color piece that matches my other material. Thanks again!

Yes, when I add the extra layer of fabric it is the same as the rest of the blanket (flannel or flannelette depending on what the fabric store calls it) But you can easily change the color to whatever you wish. And you are so right! The ragging is a beginner sewers best friend😍! All mistakes can be hidden and you end up with a beautifully finished project! Happy Sewing!

Love your tutorials, am on my 5th rag quilt, i had a problem in the begining as i could not keep up with the front and back - i found that placing a pin with a big head on the front helped to keep me straight. that way no marks and when ready to sew together i didnt worry about accidentally switching back and front. I did that before and .. it was a fussy mess till i finally straightened things out

I love this! I too make a lot of rag quilts for baby gifts. I love the idea of not having the frizz on the back. To do this, do you sew the back binding on the quilt first or both binding at the same time.
Thank you, I really do like how it adds extra thickness to the edges. I would sew the back binding first then flip over and attach the front. Similar to how I did the placemat binding at minute 5 in this video ua-cam.com/video/tXLFlCALsfE/v-deo.html of course instead of folding it inwards you would leave the top with that open edge for snipping. HOWEVER, I have been so busy sewing other items these days I havn't added a rag quilt binding since this video 😊So if you try it will you let me know how it goes? I would love to hear how it went as you will be sewing through a lot of layers. Perhaps try a jean needle or a new needle so it is sharp before doing this. My next planned rag quilt is going to be a butterfly for my niece! I am excited to get back to snipping! Happy Sewing!

Have you made a rag quilt with three layers of flannel instead of batting? Would you still add the x to keep them together? Is the thickness somewhat comparable? Thanks!
I have sewn rag quilts without batting and just a third layer of flannel. If you do this you don't need to sew the x because all three layers will be cut the same size. It won't be as thick however so it really depends on where you live. I live in Canada so the thickness is always appreciated 😂
On the clean binding side… in order to avoid ironing you could lay the binding down on the clean side, stitch it, and then fold it over to sew the other side. That way the seam is kinda hidden on both sides and really is easier. Right? Lol. I’m kinda new at this.

So when you fold your 3 inch binding in half you are sewing the front and back side down at the same time with a 1/2 inch seam? If so I am very confused when I get to the first corner because I have to fold the top and the bottom before making that turn. I am very confused on this step
Can I use cotton on the back and top and flannel in the middle?
Yes! Just make sure to prewash the fabrics because they will shrink at different rates.
How can i make my rag blanket bigger ? It is finished but looks way to small for my 2 year old toddler .Its already ragged can it be made bigger at this point?

Hi Elaine! Welcome :) You can make rag quilts with cotton fabric but you will still need some flannel to get the ragged look. I have a tutorial where I walk through cotton rag quilt tips here: tamarasjoy.com/quilted-valentines-table-runner/ And you should prewash your fabric as cotton and flannel shrinks and different rates. I say that but never do it.......I should really take my own advice! Happy Sewing!

Hi JoJo. You could do this in a large blanket too. Or you could do a normal hem. Thanks think both would look nice. Maybe yo a small tester first to see if you like sewing this binding before committing to a large one? So glad you found me on here too! Rag quilts are one of my fav blankets to sew.

How many squares do you need for a throw rag quilt?

Do you think I can make the back larger than the front, fold the edges over to the front (folding the corners neatly) and then sew 1/2 inch all around and snip the front edges? Does this make sense?
I am not sure if that would work. If you are thinking of doing this with the "no cutting" method then you would end up with folds around the entire edge doing this. With a normal rag quilt I can't see it working either. BUT if you try and prove me wrong let me know! I just can't picture it. If you want to do a proper binding go do minute 5 in this tutorial ua-cam.com/video/tXLFlCALsfE/v-deo.html and I walk through all the proper instructions on how to add binding. Unless you did the cheaters version I do on this tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/QSRJI-nH_Kw/v-deo.html But then you would have to add the backing fabric when everything else is already sewn. That's the only way I can see it working. Hope I make some form of sense! Happy Sewing!

I plan on making a quilted blanket for someone as a xmas present, but i’m not sure how many squares I should cut. They’re adult sized 🤣 and I plan on cutting 5x5in squares. Do you have any idea how many I should cut for both sides?
Sorry Katelyn. I am going to leave the math to you. Each seam will eat up a full inch of fabric if you do 1/2 inch seams so keep that in mind when figuring out how many squares you need. Happy Sewing!

Hi Lydia, I just measure around my blanket and then make enough strips to fit around the entire outer edge, with some extra to spare. Hope that answers your question.
Hi new hear I would like to make a rag quilt with 10"squares please can you tell me how much fabric I would need please? I was thinking of a size 60 x 70 inches, and how many layers with I need? Thank you.
Welcome to the world of rag quilts! Here is my tutorial focused on how to make a rag quilt:ua-cam.com/video/Fia6ApOPBIw/v-deo.html To figure out the math just take 60" divided by 10" which equals 6. So you would need around 6 squares...BUT then calculate the seams you will sew...if you sew your seams at half an inch then each seam will take away a full inch of fabric. Sewing 6 squares together would take 5 seams plus the outer edges equals another inch. Which is a total of 6 inches lost when sewing all 6 squares together. So it would be up to you if you wanted to change the size of your squares to create a blanket the size you are looking for or if you just wanted to add an extra square totalling 7 squares across and it will just be a bit larger. And then of course do the same math for the opposite measurement of 70". Hope that made sense, Happy Sewing!!! I LOVE rag quilts! Tag me on insta so I can see your blanket when it's done :) Oh! How do you do the corners when you only rag on one side? I can't figure it out.
I am sorry it took me so long to reply. I wanted to make sure I had time to explain the process. I have reviewed my video and I actually have a more recent video that will explain the process better if you were going to just do one side. In this video: ua-cam.com/video/rEKYavSb5lo/v-deo.html I walk through the process of binding a table runner (the same way you would do a full quilt). What you would do is follow the tutorial until the last step. Instead of sewing the binding folded inwards on the top you would fold it flat sew it and then you can rag that section you left flat.
