Funny personal story regarding Chex Quest..I was a kid when this came out and I found a copy of the CD in my parents back yard that someone through over the fence. We lived a block away from a grocery store. Some guy probably was walking around eating cereal and just tossed the CD away and I got a free game! :D
My dad destroyed my disc, saying that this is not a game. I'm sure he meant that this is not a game I should play at my age, but I was bawling my eyes out after that time.
In a few years, when he's a bit weary from age, sit his ass down and have a little talk about the disc he once snapped in front of you. Then, stand him in front of a mirror and make him watch as you snap his neck.
Pretty sure this was actually my first ever shooter... before even Rainbow Six or Half Life. I'll defend it to the grave. The arboretum level was stuck in my memory for years before I finally sorted out where it came from. I was young enough when I played this that I still had this sort of implicit expectation that there was a whole videogame world connected to the isolated parts I was seeing, and even though I knew I couldn't access it, I just fundamentally believed it was there. Man, childhood was awesome.
You might not be able to find the CD anymore but you can totally download this sucker and Chex Quest 2. I didn't even know there was a third one. I'm going to have to go find it now! :)
I always though that being hit by a spoon is awfully more brutal than being stabbed with a knife, i mean cmon its made out of steel and it hurts for 3 minutes
Also, you could say you were teleporting rather than killing with the Zorcher et al. but you can't say that with the spoon. Not any of the ones I have used anyway.
I had and played this! It was as close as I was able to get to Doom at the time growing up in a very controlling fundamentalist household, so I was appreciative of that.
You can also get the mod samsara for zandronum (a doom source port engine) and play as chexster and fight or work cooperatively with the characters from doom, wolfenstein, quake, heretic, hexen, duke nukem, and marathon. There are addons that add more characters as well
I remember me owning FreeDoom (look it up on google), and on a doomseeker search, I found this mod, I didn't know the name, and I deleted it. I reconized Chex, though. Well, I owe you for letting me know bout this.
I remember finding a secret room in this game with pictures of people I assume were the developers. That and I would always ask my dad to put in the 'red eyes' cheat code to make the Chex Warrior invincible. Man, this game was a blast for 5-year old me.
Thank you so much, I've been trying to remember this game for years! I played it with my cousins yeeeeears ago and could never remember what it was called!
chex quest comes with episode 2 and 3 from doom, type this in at the dos prompt: Chex -warp 2 1 or Chex -warp 3 1 it will take you to map one of episode 2 or 3 :).. how were they not sued ? :D it even has the original doom music lol
People weren't in the mindset of checking the files to make sure there isn't any surprised in the mid 1990s. I would say that most games of the time had some unused things in the code.
When I was young my granny got the demo for Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive in a cereal box and gave it to me and my brothers. It took me until 2015 to beat it. Now that's value.
When I was a kid I remember thinking the game art on the disc cover looked awesome but also assuming a free game that comes with a box of cereal must be a lame dud. This game turned out to be so underrated and kick-ass.
Hey man, this is my first comment on one of your videos, but I found your channel like 6 months or so ago, and I really dig your material so far. You have a very chill and organic style, like a more slow-paced and full exploration of the games, which is perfect for the material you cover. Great work!
Ooooooo, this video gave me the desire to see a Tech Tales about AOL! (this is a friendly suggestion, i'm sure I could research it myself but your voice is so conducive to learning and retaining information)
Man, I remember when I saw this on the shelf at the grocery store. I had no idea what I was in for, but I knew I wanted it. Chex Quest, Myst, Yobi's Basic Spelling Tricks, Spider-Man Cartoon Maker, Descent and Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon were my childhood (so was DooM and Duke Nukem 3D, but don't tell my mom :P).
Because it's the hardware I grew up with, the hardware the vast majority of people had, the hardware that's the most compatible with the most software, the hardware that causes the least amount of problems, the hardware I have the most of on-hand, etc etc...
I ended up getting that game in a box of cereal! I got that cereal just for the game, and my mom made me eat the Chex. It was a fun game for me, and was well worth having to eat the sugar free trash.
Oh man, Chex Quest! I remember when me and my brother pulled it out of our cereal box! I wasn't much of a gamer back then so I watched him play it before eventually picking it up for myself. Complete classic!
I have a whole stash of copies laying in my basement. Guess that's what happens when you accidentally order 30 boxes instead of 3 (It was a stupid mistake, and I had to eat cereal all day everyday, and yes I ordered stuff you find in every shop online, that's how lazy I was right at that time. Also had to order 10 gallons of milk after receiving my metric buttload of cereal)
+Denis Vasilev Since September of last year, when the comment was posted, I got rid of all but one of them, which I can't give away, so, sorry but I can't.
george willimott Well, yes, he DOES use both hands for guns like the Shotgun, and other bigger guns, but if you look at the hand he holds his pistol with, you will see that it is his LEFT. He also punches with that hand, too, so...
I like that UA-cam lately recommend me these old videos. I watch every new LGR Video but i am too lazy to watch the old ones. So its nice to see them in the recommended list.
You fucking rock man! I remember installing this game & playing it for HOURS AND MONTHS! Usually I am very critical of UA-cam videos, but this hit the nail on the head. I was playing Doom3 & thought about this game. Thank you for doing Chex Quest justice by delivering a honest review. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
This brought back some weird memories that I recall from when I was about 4 years old. what. I vaguely remember that cover art but I do remember eating chex cereal very clearly.
Oh wow. I remember playing this as a kid. It was really had as a kid, I'm sure if I play it now the difference in difficulty levels would be negligible as you say. I never knew it was a doom clone until college when I mentioned this game to a friend and he told me! I did love this game. Thanks for the little nostalgia trip. :)
I still have the original copy of this game. And I had no idea there was a 2nd one. I absolutely loved this game. And I thought it was hard. Expecially on the later difficulties. Enemies would randomly spawn and you had next to no ammunition.
Chex Quest 3 is pretty good I mean it's the first two Chex Quest games plus a new episode, and since it's based on Doom any mods for the original Doom or Ultimate Doom work with it though there may be issues with some as CQ3's monsters are no longer resprites of the Doom monsters they're based on, but weapon mods work really nicely with it, I remember playing through it with a Duke Nukem weapon mod, it was pretty fun kicking Flemoid ass as Duke.
I absolutely miss buying cereal to get something right out of the box. I believe Chex Quest was the reason I chose the cereal as a kid, and been buying it since!
They get games codes cheaply elsewhere, sell them there, and I get a 10-15% cut for referring people. They are indeed a nice little place to buy certain games, and I even use it myself!
the flying things at 3:34 used to scare the shit out of me when I played this as a 10 year old. I LOVED this game! I got it out of a box of cereal in the summer of 1999 when my family first got a Dell desktop with Internet. lol. That computer and the disc are long gone now.
Even here in Japan everything came with a free trial of AOL. They were still shipping discs with PC related items when most people were using Dual B channel ISDN (128k) on unlimited usage plans (around 2000 - 2001).
Hey Clint! They just put out a Chex Quest 3!! Available for download on Windows. Crazy that they brought this game back. If would be cool if you did an update segment! Love your vids.
I remember playing this a bunch back in the day. When I was a kid it blew my mind that a PC game came in a cereal box. I beat the game a bunch of times.
I remember this game! I still have it in my basement full of old Windows 95 games somewhere. Me and my brother played the hell out of it back in the day. Never knew there was a 3rd game though.
Funny thing is, out of all the games I have watched on this channel, I actually have this one. No idea when it came into this house but I remember it being a favorite of mine when I was younger. Mine works just fine but does not have the jacket anymore.
Around 2003, my brother and I got an Amazon Trail demo (yes, by the Learning Company) on a CD-ROM in a cereal box, and we actually enjoyed it. Edit: It was the 3rd edition.
If you're familiar with the term "drinking the Kool Aid" and noticed the wink and smile at the end, you'd know I'm just kidding around. I love Lazy Game Reviews! I'm a big fan of Clint's stuff! :-)
yeah, I had this disk back in the day. And yeah, it is based on Ultimate Doom. It's been awhile, but I believe the disk or the install folder had a hidden folder on it which contained a wad file, or something like that. That file had the first few levels of Chex Quest and the rest were DOOM levels. All four episodes and whatever graphics that were not used in the game.
I found an original game in the sleeve a year or two back at a goodwill for under a dollar. Money well spent. The review is on it, it's good, really good to the point that it should be considered too good for lame advertising stunts. Whoever chex paid to work on this, loved doom and really cared to make something with their time that wasn't garbage like most things of the sort were. I didn't bother with the crappy install, just pulled the WAD into gzdoom and went at it and it was a good ride. Due to the size it's great to return to if you have like a free hour or less and want to accomplish something.
I still have my game disc. When I was a kid I made a trading card game based on this, as well as a comic book and a few fan fictions. I was kinda into it. This love translated into a fairly decent collection of Classic Doom games though
Oh my gosh it's been so long! I remember I tried this game out as a child (I was like 7) and got scared the heck out by it because I was just that way when I was young and did NOT expect a first-person-shooter out of a cereal box. XD I don't even know if I still have it because I never touched the game again after trying it for like 5 minutes.
I actually remember playing this at my cousin's house. I couldn't get passed the 1st level because I didn't know the controls. But now I want to play that game again and actually beat it
i one got a mario cart clone "Pet Racer" from cereal box, which was a part of my,my brothers and my sisters childhood, and now I'm eating cereal while watching this.
A few skin changes for the enemies and the status bar and it would be possible to turn this into a pretty convincing Buzz Lightyear FPS without much effort.
I got a Ghostbusters record attached to a box of cereal once, and another time, I got a Ninja Turtles plastic bowl and spoon which I think was shrink wrapped into the cereal box. Good times as a 4 year old or so.
same here. I was 10 when my parents first got a computer in the summer of 1999 and I got this game out of a box of Chex. haha Then soon after, I discovered Rollercoaster Tycoon, The Sims and it's many expansion packs . . . surprised the hard drive didn't explode.
"Don't use those 50 free hours all in one day". I feel that joke was underappreciated.
Me too, considering the number of "but there are only 24 hours a day, I don't get it" comments I got :P
I've watched this at least twice and I think I just caught the joke this time around. :)
@@LGR I liked that joke, but I have to be honest, I wondered if it would have been possible to use all 50 hours in a day using multiple modems...
Someone should tell him there's only 24 hours in a day
@@LGR not the way I use the internet... Mwahahahaha 😈🤣
Funny personal story regarding Chex Quest..I was a kid when this came out and I found a copy of the CD in my parents back yard that someone through over the fence. Threw.
Nice dude
Santa saw something good in you that year.
That poor fool, didn't know what he was missing out on.
"Some guy probably was walking around eating cereal"... That has literally never happened
My dad worked at General Mills, guess what he brought home for me one day back in 1996? I love you dad. :D
Aaaawwwww, that's sweet. :3
xiaochicash Nice dad you had
AOL? :p
Chlamidia?
New Mom
That little animation of the Chex guy at the bottom looking back and forth just like the Doom Marine... That's the greatest thing I've ever seen.
My dad destroyed my disc, saying that this is not a game. I'm sure he meant that this is not a game I should play at my age, but I was bawling my eyes out after that time.
***** doesnt seem like he would.
No offense dude, but GOD I wish the annoying little brats who play CoD online had parents like your dad. >.>
unnamed715 i agree.
Go to stole his money and buy a new copy...for revenge XD
In a few years, when he's a bit weary from age, sit his ass down and have a little talk about the disc he once snapped in front of you.

I came here after AVGN most recent video & didn’t know LGR also reviewed this!
same here :)
Welcome
While looking at the comments for the AVGN video I saw LGR's review on the sidebar. I shouldn't have been surprised.
Pretty sure this was actually my first ever shooter... before even Rainbow Six or Half Life. I'll defend it to the grave.

Brutal Chex quest anyone?
my hand is up for this
You can get that by running Brutal Doom v20 in Chex Quest 3.
Nice
maybe thats no a mini-zorcher Weapons beacuse a Firearms
Let's not ruin this perfectly fine game with that Brutal crap, please!
Absolutely. Not sure when it'll happen but it's in the works!
Sort of. But I was talking about the way the game handles specifically, and how enjoyable it is to dispatch enemies, which isn't very good in HURL.
You can also get the mod samsara for zandronum (a doom source port engine) and play as chexster and fight or work cooperatively with the characters from doom, wolfenstein, quake, heretic, hexen, duke nukem, and marathon. There are addons that add more characters as well

That's the secret in level 2. You get the LAZ Device (BFG9000) in there.
I loved playing this game on my dad's Windows 98. Along with other MS DOS games like Jazz Jack Rabbit, Commander Keen and Uh Oh More Lemmings!.
Watching you pass by all those hidden areas was painful. Also made me a little impressed that I remembered all of them. Go me.
Thank you so much, I've been trying to remember this game for years! I played it with my cousins yeeeeears ago and could never remember what it was called!
Loved this game. Was one of my first PC games along with my first computer in 1996.

hmmmmmm
but the real question is... are you still playing as a Chex warrior and zorching demons, or is it just the actual Doom game with original assets?
When I was young my granny got the demo for Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive in a cereal box and gave it to me and my brothers. It took me until 2015 to beat it. Now that's value.
i actually Favorited this video as I was so happy to have a reply from you (one of my favorite youtubers) keep up the great work :)
I love when I get recommended a random LGR video. It reminds me that it's been a while since I had a good LGR, cozy binge train going
When I was a kid I remember thinking the game art on the disc cover looked awesome but also assuming a free game that comes with a box of cereal must be a lame dud. This game turned out to be so underrated and kick-ass.
Fun fact, they are apparently remaking the game as we speak. No joke. Destructoid has an article with a trailer for it.
it's actually remade in unreal

i like to think that Pvt Fragg only ever uses his dominant hand.

Why? There is no shipping, it's all digital, and they'll send codes to any email address.
I had already made that spooning joke in my head when I first saw that spoon.
"SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON" said the Tick.
I absolutely miss buying cereal to get something right out of the box. I believe Chex Quest was the reason I chose the cereal as a kid, and been buying it since!
