  • Judy Carmichael recorded a special two-part conversation with Tony Bennett on her Public Radio show "Jazz Inspired". Judy and Tony talk about his long career, his classic recordings with pianist Bill Evans and his recent collaboration with an all-star cast (Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, Michael Bublé) on his new CD, "Duets II".
In this clip, Tony talks about the process he and Bill Evans used in conceptualizing the songs for "The Tony Bennett and Bill Evans Album".

Bill Evans not only improvised melody lines over chord changes during his piano solos, he also improvised complete arrangements of tunes, before and as he played them. This is the skill of a highly-evolved Jazz musician, who can improvise every aspect of the music.

That's why we all love Bill! Check out my conversation on "Jazz Inspired" with Zev Feldman about his double CD of unreleased Bill Evans with orchestra, trio and solo. www.jazzinspired.com/browse-shows/zev-feldman?rq=feldman

RIP Tony. He always championed bebop and the cause of different music.

This is some strange coincidence. I just started relistening Bennett and Evans and was marvelling (once again) how magical the recordings were. And now, this video shows up. A post from Tony Bennett on Mother's Day. I have to agree with you. Both recordings are magical. You can see my avatar is a drawing of my man.

Art Song. Tony and Bill reached that level. And they reached it second to none, whether it be Schubert, Brahms, or Mahler. Tony and Bill made great Art Song together.

They are great albums. With Burt Bacharach's death, I've been listening to his tunes, and I'm sorry that Bill and Tony didn't record A House Is Not A Home.
