A mistake I have to point out is that kovir actually supported the north in the nilfgard wars just not openly. Many mercenary companies were paid by kovir to fight for the north. Now the reason they didn't openly support the north was because of trade with the empire but they also didn't want nilfgard to conquer their neighbors
Fun fact, two of their coat of arms ( the one with the wheel and the one with the armor gauntlet are actually German coat of arms in real live, so Switzerland is a good Komparsin since Switzerland belonged to the HRE back then. )
One thing I would add to Witcher 3 is Geralt and Triss in Kovir. Maybe a really small area like their house or just a cutscene of them going there. It's a shame it seems like CDPR ran out of money when making the game😂
A duchy isn't a separate kingdom owned or vassal to another, it is a part of a kingdom. More state(U.S.) rather than separate. A duchy is ruled by a noble family a king allows to rule it. If the duchy does fine and the kings taxes are paid it is left to self rule. The reason for a duchy is less for the king to deal with as for governance and localized problems.
I assume that Kovir is based on Switzerland or Austria and I also think that Kovir might also be based on Northern Italy. The reason why I say Northern Italy is because Northern Italy is also very mountainous which includes the Alps
Kovir could be based on the city state of Venice, not necessarily Italy as a whole. The story with Redania also reminds me of Norway. Sweden once gifted Norway some seaterratories in celebration of its independence from danemark. Turned out later that there were huge oil reserves in that area which build norways wealth
Actually, this tale of the resourse ritch kindom that was given away for cheap rather reminds me of Alaska, which was owned by Russia but was bought cheaply by the USA before discovering its rich oil resourses. But yeah, the other hints rather leads towards switzerland.

Couldn't Kovir also be based on Norway? Norway was for a long time a Swedish colony / vassal known for its poverty due to the harsh landscape. Then Sweden left them into independence to rid themselves of the financial burden Norway was on the Swedish state. Later then oil, gas and other earthly riches were found and Sweden very much regretted letting them go. Now Norway isn't the poor neighbour anymore but the rich neighbour. Just a thought.
Random questions but when did the discovery of minerals happen in Kovir and when did Redania lose its power in the region? I'm about to head for my third run of the Witcher LARP in Poland.
