Well, I think that the Republican Party is too far gone to be saved. Keep in mind that the GOP adopted its notorious "Southern strategy" of deliberately wooing white racists more than 50 years ago. This isn't a new development, although it's been getting worse and worse.
Both Romney and McCain joined the Republican Party _after_ that "Southern strategy" was party policy. They knew what the GOP was like when they joined it (certainly by the time they ran for office). They knew the party was _deliberately_ using racism for political advantage, but they joined it, anyway.
For a half century now, the guiding policy of the Republican Party has been the willingness to do pretty much _anything_ for political power. Well, I say "pretty much," because I used to assume that they'd draw the line at treason. No more. These days, I'm convinced that there is nothing - literally *nothing* - Republicans won't do for political power.

It's funny how Republicans loved Madison, until the second he outed other republicans for their drug use and $#x parties. All the horrible things he's said and done was fine, but when he told on his friends, that was unacceptable.

Now that he's considered a lame duck. He still probably either keep his mouth shut or just do a tell-all, possibly to the 1/6/2021 Committee. Just a thought.
