Abe sittin like a grandmother watching her kids unwrap presents on Christmas
Lol haha!!!
Hilarious haha Abe is such a legend
AND the tea cup lmfao
😂😂😂
.....as one of the just crispiest drummers on earth
Abe, the most badass drummer of all time: Sips tea calmly.
He's such an old lady I love him
I think the self title record is amazing honestly.
My fav from them without an ounce of doubt. And next to Lateralus and Dirt it's tied for my top 3 favorite records of all time. Deftones Tool and AIC for life.
@@justinrisen1929 awesome that all 3 of those bands collaborated on some level
Deftones one of the best bands of my generation, they will go down in history!!
One of the best and most innovative bands of all time, not just generational. Took brutal music and married it with beauty like no other band.
I grew up with Silverchair, Tool, Deftones, Karnivool, COG, Deep Purple, The Doors, Master Of The Puppets, Audioslave,
And I'm so grateful!!
They have gone down in History...
The best band of all time in my opinion.
Abe and his little tea cup. So classy!! Lol love it!
Got into Deftones when Around the Fur came out I was 14 and I’m now I’m still a huge fan at 40. Can’t wait for the new album to come out
Abe is such an amazing drummer...
He is half the band.
very underrated player, he has a groove thats all his own, on some songs he almost plays the drums like it's a hip hop beat or something, a lot of their contemporaries tried similar style and never came close to creating some of the awesome patterns he has created (think of songs like digital bath, or Rx Queen, the groove is insane so funky and unique)
@@GyroLamb Well said, Street Carp, when he transitions just as Chino is singing “new address,” and “oh I confess,” the three kick bass/single crash delayed hits make that song what it is! So bad ass.
If you took Abe and chino and out them with just about anyone it would still sound like deftones
One of my favorite memories is skateboarding with Chino in Louisville on the Around the Fur tour.
That album is up there with albums I've listened to hundreds of times!..
that’s dope as fuck bro i didn’t even know that he skated haha
with him? omg are you friends with him.. thats cool do you talk still
Im kinda sad that chino doesnt really seem to like self titled and said it didnt work and stuff. Its perfect to me in its own sound and vibe, one of my favorites personally. I like that deftones albums all have their own unique vibe and to me self titled is an essential part of their discography. I get it though its associated with bad times for them.
Absolutely agree on all counts. That record came out the summer that I was 18 and my bond with it was total and indescribable. For a long time it led the pack for me among what I consider to be the holy trinity: Around the Fur, White Pony, self-titled. I think that record gets a bad wrap from many quarters and that it is much more cohesive than what people give it credit for. I have the "bandaged love" painting of the deer from the CD booklet tattooed on my abdomen and probably getting "dark days" tatted on my knucks soon.
its awesome, its also perfectly sequenced, i love how the heaviest part of the album, the ending to Bloody Cape goes right into the piano ballad ''Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event'' its so jarring, they perfectly captured the chaos that was happening inside the band and chinos feelings.
Fully agree! Best record for me. White Pony is cool and all but this one has the kind of mix and "live band playing together" sound that appeals to me more. Which is funny since it sounds like they pro-tooled the hell out of it.
@black spring SAME. My memories with Self Titled are very vivid.
I remember first hearing Hexagram on freakin NAPSTER and it absolutely blowing my mind. I was so excited for it to come out.
Self-Titled is a great album. Diamond Eyes and White Pony are still the high water marks but Self-Titled is so incredibly underrated in their discography
good to hear Chino say ATF one of his favorites. that album is perfection.
Great questions.. . This is the best interview I've seen... Shouts to the interviewer for knowing his topic inside and out
Beez is great. Super knowledgeable and awesome dude
I was looking for this comment, he is so laid back but asks good questions at the same time
*in Gary Oldman's Dracula voice speaking to this video*: i've crossed oceans of time to find you.
It's a funny feeling in my chest to know that this interview took place two months before Chi passed away.
Chi died in April, a month before
It was April 13
This interview took place in February 2013, Chi died in April 2013 so OP is correct. If it had been after Chi's death they would've definitely mentioned it.
i love this band so fuckin much i really cannot describe it
I'VE WAITED EONS TO WATCH THIS AGAIN. I'VE TRAVELED FAR AND WIDE ON THE INTERNET TO SEE THIS MASTERPIECE AGAIN. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH FOR THE UPLOAD BRO!!!!
Around the 24-minute mark, when Scuzz asks when the dark days for the band that began around the time of self-titled ended, the way that Chino says "It went on for a while" and genuinely laughs for the first time in the interview. There's such a special quality in that moment for the lifelong Deftones fan. It's as if he says it with an almost conspiratorial air, like he laughs for those who are in the know. That this band has seen more than its share of struggles and dysfunction. That this music in a sense is music for those of us who suffer. Those of us who know dark days. Hang in there, friends.
deftones made depression look beautiful...the greatest band ever
You’re into depression cause it matches your eyes 🫶🖤
Chino is so handsome, I can’t stand it.
Abe having a spot of tea! LOL
their best interview, so in depth. thank you for reuploading this
Wonderful interview
Abe should do more interviews, i had no idea he was so articulated and sharp. Scuzz always makes great interviews
Love Abe
“Wildly different”
It’s true they are but OMG he says that sooooo much lol 😂 I love scuzz, great interviewer btw
Wooo! The Scuzz interview is back! Watch this kids!
It's good to see this interview again. Thanks a lot.
I love Abe so much 🖤 what a god tier drummer :)
What a fantastic interview!
thank you so much guys. i was looking for this interview for so long. i love how they talk about all of their albums here.
Thank you! Just found this channel and I’m binge watching everything 😁
Thanks for tuning in
awesome material, thank you so much
they truly are the greatest
I guess I will have lived a happy life if I ever get to achieve half of what they have achieved and be half as cool as they are
Deftones 4ever
I had the amazing experience of meeting them and hanging out with them after a show in Berlin, and Abe was rocking a towel on his head like a someone getting out of the shower, so seeing him chilling and sipping tea here makes total sense lol! My favorite band of all time!
The Dark Days were full of hard drugs and booze. I personally love Self-Titles and Saturday Night Wrist. 😂
Fucking awesome, thanks for uploading this. I think the diamond eyes part is missing ):
I'm old enough that Adrenaline was my 1st Deftones album... on tpae... and then my friend got Fur... and I copied that and liked it a LOT around the time right before Pony came out and I was into psychoactive drugs at that time in my 20s and Pony BLEW ME AWAY, I couldn;t get enough of it, it had the same impact that SuperUnknown by Soundgarden had on me in my teens... I got the Deftones album when I was going thru a dark phase, it was actually 05 when I got it.... I never knew Wrist and never really listened to it until I had my 2nd coming with Deftones... I never really listened that much to the "new" Deftones from Diamond thru Koi... I only had a recent re-re-love-affair with Deftones when Ohms came out. I didn';t even KNOW Gore existed until I started making a definitive complete discography of their works. But now, hell, I';ve gone beyond Deftones, I made a compilation of Chino-related tracks from his early coabs with Soulfly to his later colabs with dude from Linkin Park... I have ths track by some Hispanic named band that's all complex and jazzy at 1st and then goes to Latino hip hop and back.... Mike SHinoda, that's the name I couldn't remember... and... Crosses sounding SO much like Depeche Mode and harkening back to my college days being into Goth very much... and back in the early 2000's when I was experimenting a LOT... I got into post-metal like Isis and Neurosis.... and discovered PALMS... if any of you reading this have never heard of Palms... you can thank me later. To say it's the most beautiful thing Chino's ever put his voice to is an understatement. It'll make you cry, it's so beautiful anbd stark. I eagerly await the release of a re-worked EROS.
Oh and I only saw Deftones play live once because of my isolation.... I saw them in '97 opening for Korn.... I got my wnter coat stolen in Montreal. Truth be told, Chino wasn't very good at singing back then. I thought they were gonna be dead in the water, but Chino pulled through and found a more fitting vocal range and style and NOW I think he's one of the best singers in metal OF ALL TIME... right up there with Layne Staley, Chris COrnell, Phil Anselmo, MJ Keenan, annnnnd call me a shmuck but... Thom Yorke (not metal, but one of my fav vocalists to sing along to)... But considering CHino's major influences include Depeche Mode, I no longer have to feel any sense of "shame" for saying I'm a big fan of them. LOL
Suadade, Shadows & Light
Palms gives me chills every time
@@SethHMG I have a couple songs by them, is there more than that? It was all I could find online...
@@nodrogdivad that’s the only one with Chino and Chelsea Wolfe but they have a few others w HR, Lee Scratch Perry, Randall Blythe, and others.
They have a new track that dropped this year called Chill of Death. Nothing comes close to the guitar solo on S&L
Nobody sounds like the deftones but you can tell they draw from a bunch of different genres. Can’t put your finger on it necessarily but that’s why they’re so good. Shoe gazey metaly digitally brilliance
Epic.
It kinda hurts my heart that Chino doesn't like and won't listen to Adrenaline. It's like, the record that changed my direction in life, musically. I LOVE that record. ATF and WP are my FAVORITES, but I absolutely STILL love the first record
It's a stupid thing some artists have where they start to think they're too good for their early work, even if their early work is their best stuff. Brandon Boyd from Incubus is the same, probably a good majority of people would say S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is their best album, but he's decided it's cringy. Stupid and unfortunate mindset.
Same with Daniel Johns and frogstomp
Chino has always been so humble for an inconic metal singer. He's more talented than he realises....
I miss you so much my God!
Ya, hard left is right. White Pony was revolutionary.
❤
Funny he mentioned Will Haven. I saw Deftones with Will Haven in 97 at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel, Providence, RI. Sick show, but I had a busted collarbone so I couldn't get in the pit.
Also, I find it hard to believe that there were fans that abandoned Deftones because of White Pony. If they did, fuck em. That album is one of 3 perfect albums front to back. My opinion, obviously, but also fact
that interviewer is funnnnny 😂
Bizarre, saturday night wrist was my favorite 😂
I believe this was uploaded in May or April of 2013
yeah, was posted on sharing lungs on may 24th 2013
Always wondered why that song on Diamond Eyes was called Risk... I think I have my answer lol
It’s a shame that the band have such dark memories of making “Saturday Night Wrist”, I love that album and it has some of my favourite Deftones songs.
👆✌️
"let your freak flag fly! " Yassss
Deftones have always been such a humble band. Music always before ego. It definitely reflects in their music and is a big part of their success
Sorry but that is not something you can say about Chino.
Abe sipping tea? Shut up this tops it all.
"Coffee*
Is this the one where they keep saying "come on, man!" to each other?
They have never made a bad record despite thier feelings on the matter in my opinion lol all absolutely amazing in thier own right. But if I was to pick any low points for me (only hypothetical because I really cant) it would be Gore and SNW though I absolutely love both of these records and SNW is actually the main rotation for me right now. Also unpopular opinion I feel White Pony is somewhat overrated. Masterpiece like the others but gripped me the least out of their best if that makes any sense? ST and KNY and Around the Fur are my favs for sure.
Koi No Yokan is the best album they've ever made.
why so much hate for the self-titled??
Because it's very average and doesn't remotely hint at the genius they are capable of.
@@mrcloopreturns4265 i think you should listen to it more closely if thats how you feel
@@321doucheface I've listened to it loads. Simply put, it's a product of its time and in no way as timeless as their other albums. It reeks of its contemporaries, the production is typical of albums of its era, it completely lacks any ambience and is simply a one trick pony of aggression married stylistically with urban bearts, rhythms and vocal delivery. Another term for that? Nu Metal. Thankfully, Deftones distanced themselves from that genre with each subsequent release, before eventually transcending all genre tags and tropes and making timeless music, devoid of classification.
So....nah, I'm good. You go listen to it some more, take your baggy jeans and Limp Bizkit t-shirt off and realise that it ain't the 90s pal
@@jsullivan2112 the issues you're describing applied much more to the Saturday Night Wrist period. Deftones was self-titled because the original title/track list leaked and Chino got upset and cut the title track at the last minute. It was called Lovers and was actually one of the best tracks they recorded for that album. ua-cam.com/video/98iSgIe2eGk/v-deo.html They released it as a b-side on the Hexagram single.
@@mrcloopreturns4265 the self titled album ain't really nu metal but okay
.it seems to me that Scuzz shares adhd with the dudes and that's why this interview works as it does :)
The interviewer looks like an older guy trying to look hip and young. That hat though.
Why is "alternative" a CORNY thing to say?
first
What do you think about Black Stallion? Mike from Linkin Park and Knife Party? There CRAZY video ua-cam.com/video/rlpb0kBiDjA/v-deo.html
Wow.I luv the honesty of Chino..great interview
