I said it before and I'll say it again: Stephen Curry ruined basketball. That's not a diss on him though. We know Steph is an all time great but the way he shoots and plays the game is one of a kind. Problem was when he blew up in 2015, he became so popular that kids would try to emulate that and think they can become the next Steph. But no one can be like him. So young players nowadays think jacking up 3's and shooting from the logo is good basketball fundamentals. It's also the reason why defense is getting worse and worse because so many players would give up on defense if their man blows by them so they can get back on transition offense and play high paced and shoot the ball nonstop. Only casuals and kids will say this is good basketball and it's old heads being jealous that players are more skilled. Learning to shoot 3's from far away and high scoring isn't being more skilled.
Just like everyone wanted to emulate Dr. J, Iverson, Deion Sanders, Barry Sanders, Terrel Owens, Micheal Vick, and Bo Jackson, and Odell Beckham. Times change and evolve gramps!

I know somebody will say its been like this, but thats just proof they werent watching nothing. 100 threes in a game. Never seen that. If its his fault its the 2022 Curry, not 2015. Outside that, the 2019 Rockets kept up with the superteam Warriors by jacking up 3s. That showed everybody that no matter how good a team is, you can win if you jack u p, and hit, enough 3s.
You have to realize everything eventually evolves in sports and life. NBA is more skill in handles , footwork, play making and shooting not just shooting from deep.
Shaq is wrong. The other day golden state shot 50% from 3 and got beat by Dallas, who shot 51% from 3. Both teams took over 40 3s each. It’s not only one, two, or three teams that can do this. Any team can do this at a given night, including charlotte. Now, some teams are more consistent, but if you want to beat those teams you have to try to get consistent at making 3s too. This is what the game has become. 3 is more than 2. Getting better at the 3 also makes your 2s easier. It’s over, this is the best strategy with the current rules. If you want to stop it, implement some rule changes.

The low ratings during the regular season has nothing to do with all of sports media repeating "all that matters is a ring/the playoffs are all that matters!" For the last decade. I'm sure that has almost no effect
Analytics tells teams that the only shots worth taking are corner threes, open threes, free throws, and layups. Hence every ofense is designed to generate those 3 shots. The Rules have also been adjusted to maximize those 3 shots. It's simply a question of math so to fix it you have to change the math. To change the math you likely need to do several different things. 1) allow hand checking on the parimeter again. This will make it harder to get into the paint on drives causing rotations leading to open 3s/corner 3s. It will aslo make step back threes harder becasue the defender can ride you closer with a hand on you. 2) They need to allow players to be very physical in defending the rim. They can and should still call fouls but the flagerants and ejections have to stop. 3) get rid of the restricted area under the basket. the NBA should play more back to backs as tired legs don't shoot distance shots as well. Players will never go for these things because they don't want a physical game anymore and Owners don't want players on guaranteed contracts getting injured. So if those aren't possible you have to explore some radical changes like, getting rid of the corner 3 by making the 3 point line a true arch or capping how many points you can score via 3 point shot or making dunks worth 3 points etc. Of course none of this solves the problem of the fact that the players don't really care about the regular season which load management proves every year. There really isn't a way to solve that without being draconian. Something like if you don't play in at least 65 games you are not elidgible to play in the post season (unless you average less than 18 minutes an appearance). You could give injury expemtions but have the qualification be something like have to have missed 15 consecutive games etc.
When I was young, and dinosaurs roamed the earth, I remember when the 3 point shot was first created. The great coach John Thompson at Georgetown said that they had it backwards. He said that it takes no effort to get an open shot from way out at the three point line, but it takes a real basketball play to work it inside. Therefore, he said, a layup should be worth 3 points but a shot from out at the line should be 2, and maybe only 1 point.
lol that’s one way to look at it. The 3 point shot is worth more simply because it’s a harder shot to hit. Your margin for error is much lower than a layup
He was right...we've had it backwards the whole time. Getting down in the paint amongst the wolves and lions for a dunk should be worth 3 , while a lazy, bailout 3 should be worth 1. I agree. He's right.
Maybe a regular inside shot should be worth 2 points, and dunks could be worth 3 points? I actually really like the idea of switching it up like that. More players would attack the rim, essentially being rewarded for exciting plays. This way teams can choose to attack the rim or shoot a million threes, and both teams can compete. Alley oops aren't exactly easy, let's make exciting dunks worth 3 points. I would honestly say that dunking on someone who's grabbing you is a lot more difficult than shooting from the outside while you're wide open.

The NBA removes illegal defense to slow down Shaq. In order to recreate the space they once had, players become way better shooters on average. Refs then forget what a moving screen is. @@mirkecWii change the scoring system to 3s and 4s. The reason people are shooting so many 3s is because it’s so mathematically advantageous. The point differential is huge and a below average 3pt shooter has a higher impact than an elite 2pt shooter. That’s one of the issues in the NBA when I’m watching teams like the Boston Celtics or the Thunder or any other teams is the three-point shooting is ridiculous. To have that many three-point attempts is crazy to me and it’s embarrassing. What happened to Showtime? Guys going for a dunks and layups crossover jumpers mid range things like that. Now on the fast break you’re pulling up for three instead of going for layups or dunks.
this was like watching Duke 20 years ago, all they did was shoot 3s i stopped watching all together, 3s and the final 2 minutes takes 20 minutes with fouls and free throws, every game ends the same way aside from a blow out
If the stats say the 3 ball is better, teams will do it. Teams have got lazy and not enough IQ in the back office of most organizations to actually know that an uncontested layup is always better than a 3. Unfortunately young athletes are being told to flair to the corners in stead of positioning for that layup.
regular season games are turning into what the all star game used to be. .and honestly playoff games are like what regular season games used to be.. and on top of that. the stars dont play on nationally televised games so nobody watches. and yes, all the game is now is a 3 point shooting contest.
You summed it up perfectly. It really looks like nobody on the court cares what the score is, nobody is out there firing the team up if they're down, and nobody plays with any edge like Kobe or Kevin Garnett back in the day
I just commented suggesting a system where each team is allotted fifteen 3-point attempts in the first three quarters. And then they are each given an additional five 3-point attempts in the fourth quarter. With this, they are forced to use them wisely. I believe in 2004 the average team shot about nineteen 3-pointers a game.
Or after making 15 or 20 3 pointers, anything beyond that counts for 2 points. So teams will store them and only try for them in the 4th quarter either when games are close so they want to blow the other team out, or they're so behind that they want to catch up.
They’re shooting more threes because it’s 50% more points at only 10% less FG % so you’re marginally adding more relative points per attempt assuming league averages in FG% from 2 and 3. It has nothing to do with personnel or coaching fads.. it’s all statistics.

In my opinion, the 2010s were the best era of basketball. 3s, inside game, defense, hustle, skill, it was pure hoops. Players cared about winning and worked hard on their skills. Now, players try too hard to be Steph Curry. We have star players like Jokic and Luka who clearly don't care about the game enough to work out or play defense. Other players like Joel Embiid, Zion, and Ben Simmons are all lazy. Everybody has a podcast and refuses to lock in, like why was PG talking about leaked lockeroom footage? Ugly contested jumpers have always been a part of basketball. Magic was far from a great shooter but he had no problem pulling up whenever over whoever no matter how ugly it was.
This is absolutely the point. You simply can't get a layup every single possession, because then a team will just pack the paint on you, and then maths tells you that you might as well take the chance at the 3, instead of the long 2
@ yea but yk how ugly and bad wide open missed 2s are its so much worse. Also getting to the basket and posting up is still king in the NBA. People just like to complain

The concept of a three point shot was always kinda flawed. Teams get rewarded for forgoing more advanced strategies and physical play in favor of just chucking up threes all game. It’d make more sense to reward accuracy vs distance, like for example any shot that goes in without touching the backboard first is three points, if it touches the backboard it’s two.

Been going on since like 2017. The game has steadily been getting worse the last 30 years. It peaked from 1984-1993.
I blame Mike d Antony and his late 2000s Suns. Zero defense and just outscore the other team. It’s unfair to call Curry the issue but it’s the 29 other teams that wished to have his offensive production by having a concerted effort make threes after the 73-9 season.
When you start calling Steph Curry a point guard, you know something is wrong.
You mean nerds like Daryl Morey! Steph is one of the few that should be taking 3s!
Just like everyone wanted to emulate Dr. J, Iverson, Deion Sanders, Barry Sanders, Terrel Owens, Micheal Vick, and Bo Jackson, and Odell Beckham. Times change and evolve gramps!
I feel like if he was the problem the league wouldve gotten like this year sooner.
I haven’t even checked out highlights this yesr
I stopped watching the NBA when they started shooting threes nonstop. It’s less aggressive and boring.

John Thompson was wrong
He was right...we've had it backwards the whole time. Getting down in the paint amongst the wolves and lions for a dunk should be worth 3 , while a lazy, bailout 3 should be worth 1. I agree. He's right.
Chamberlain would have just got the dunk outlawed twice if they did that.

And the coach won't do a damn thing because he's the biggest draw in the team. It showed that they couldn't draft well and team has no balance (Charlotte hasn't been to playoffs in years).
That sounds disgusting 3/18 …the coach should have said no more 3 point shots…..
When Shaq drops the Dumba** it’s always hilarious
Gone are days where 3s are beautifully set plays. Now the NBA is pure offense and no defense
I just don't see how you stop it, if threes are winning you games and championships, they will use it
@@mirkecWii change the scoring system to 3s and 4s. The reason people are shooting so many 3s is because it’s so mathematically advantageous. The point differential is huge and a below average 3pt shooter has a higher impact than an elite 2pt shooter. Switching to 3/4 reduces the net value of the distance shot and requires a much higher degree of precision to be effective.
@@BlazerManiacNumber96 Exactly! I've been saying this for years. The ratio is broken. The 3 being worth 50% more points is way too much; it's a glitch in the system. BUT... the problem with 3s and 4s is the free throws. You can't have players shooting more FT's because that slows the game down. You might have to go to 4s and 5s instead, and then make FT's worth 2. And you only get two free throws for a foul on a 3-point shot.
@@twown I think you can still have them shoot 3 FT’s, but maybe change the time limit to 5 seconds instead of (a loosely enforced) 10. Could keep things moving.
Scaling historic records regarding FT’s would be impossible though
@@BlazerManiacNumber96 But assuming the FT's are worth 2 points each, then the free throws (6 points) would be worth more than the shot attempt (5 points). That doesn't seem right either. (I've given this a lot of thought. lol)
@@twown Oh no, I imagined keeping FT's worth 1 point and just have players attempt as many as their shot attempt was worth. Yeah... this is the wrench in things lol
Imagine modern players shootin so many threes and still getting hurt and load managing and missing games with todays modern training and medicine and complaining about playing back to back games!!
you said a lot there chief so I'll give ya thumbs up
There you used to be a time when teams delegated the 3pt shot to the players who averaged over 40%.
Now everyone and their mama is shooting it.
33% times 3 is one point.
50% times 2 is one point.
So why would you need to shoot 40%?
The 3-pt shot is too valuable. That's the problem.
Because it's statistically equally efficient to the 2-point shot. What is it with people not looking at the stats
@@chief1325 lol, these plebs think that the 3 is just a circus shot. They purposely ignore its value, likely because their nostalgia teams from the past wouldn't even score 50 in this era. They would be routed by superior defensive tactics and peak offensive onslaught. Best 90s team would be swept by the Wizards to be frank.
@@freddypyotr3771 thank you lol
Old heads who’ve been out the league too long, and I love the fellas. No ones watching games because it’s too expensive!! Everyone’s on streameast
3s were such a big deal back then. When ray allen was hittin 3s it was just amazing. Because there was so much other stuff going on so when 3s were falling it was so fun. Its watered down now its boring
Wemby a 10’ guy jacking up 3s. Rather than dunking on everyone. 😂😂😂 All that to be told: “oh you are a unicorn”…
Nobody says Wemby is a unicorn. Wemby is a alien.
Adam Lefkoe is great at hosting this show.
this was like watching Duke 20 years ago, all they did was shoot 3s i stopped watching all together, 3s and the final 2 minutes takes 20 minutes with fouls and free throws, every game ends the same way aside from a blow out
If the stats say the 3 ball is better, teams will do it.
It really looks like nobody on the court cares what the score is, nobody is out there firing the team up if they're down, and nobody plays with any edge like Kobe or Kevin Garnett back in the day
@@jareddickerson5127 Giannis does, but most of the other superstars of today I'd agree
Yep players don't care, Adam Silver doesn't care, that translates through the TV screen. Why would they expect fans to care?
politics, 3s, and the refs are undeniably why ratings are down, in that order IMO
Put a cap on how many three's can be taken in a game
I just commented suggesting a system where each team is allotted fifteen 3-point attempts in the first three quarters. And then they are each given an additional five 3-point attempts in the fourth quarter. With this, they are forced to use them wisely.
I believe in 2004 the average team shot about nineteen 3-pointers a game.
Or after making 15 or 20 3 pointers, anything beyond that counts for 2 points. So teams will store them and only try for them in the 4th quarter either when games are close so they want to blow the other team out, or they're so behind that they want to catch up.
@@VCT3333 I like that. And it's less complicated than my idea.
They’re shooting more threes because it’s 50% more points at only 10% less FG % so you’re marginally adding more relative points per attempt assuming league averages in FG% from 2 and 3. It has nothing to do with personnel or coaching fads.. it’s all statistics.
That’s so boring
There’s too many games. Nobody cares or find games significant until playoffs come around
3’s are part of the game… we in Europe are more delighted when players hit the 3’s👌
And ya in Europe absolutely SUCK in basketball, watching European basketball is depressing
@@TheExclusiveOne720All the best players in the NBA are European lol
Shooting bad shots is acceptable??? 😂😂😂 dude you know nothing about sports
It’s 3’s and NO defense and stars sitting out way too much
Definitely too many 3’s being shot, I always get pissed at my Bulls giving up open layups to shoot a contested 3. I can’t how many times they’ve done that this season.
Ironically Boston, the face of Analytics, has among the best, if not the best/most versatile defense in the game. Yall just dont like when three point teams play defense too 😂
14 of 56 from three!?? Good lord
Sorry but I watched that garbage in the 2000’s. I’d rather watch teams shoot 100+ 3s a game than dribbling in circles for 20 seconds only to brick a mid range jumper.
Also, the NBA is entirely inaccessible. I watch the league constantly but haven’t contributed to the ratings in almost 10 years because I just stream everything online. To actually watch the game requires a blood sacrifice
I completely agree with you. There's a nostalgia from these talking heads ("back in my day" kinda stuff) for a game that is less complex and arguably, like you said, uglier to watch. I'd rather see the best shooters shoot, but somehow they're complaining about it in a Celtics (defending champs) vs Bulls game, two teams with good 3 point shooters (Kenny's analysis leaves much to be desired). I said it in another comment but I completely agree about the accessibility. Some of these online streams are better quality/experience than their official app, not even going to mention the blackouts for local teams,
Curry absolutely killed the game.
Casual take, by that logic so did Jordan
@@justsomeguy2142uhm aint no one wants to be like Jordan 😂 if you asked someone “do you want to be like Curry or Jordan” people will say curry because hes a crazy 3 point shooter 😂

@@princejellyfish3945 NGA THATS BEYOND THE POINT NOBODY WANTS TO BE LIKE MIKE ANYMORE DF? every kids dream is to be like curry 😂
Curry didn’t do this, this is lazy coaching and analytics
In Asia, shooters are the new demigods, kids can finally imitate someone in the NBA; the TV ratings are through the roof. I keep telling the youngsters, if you want to take basketball seriously, you got to be able to drain 3's with your eyes closed cause you'll never outgrow your opponents, but you can outshoot them.
Aight nba should move to Asia then cause nobody wants to watch that bs
@@AJB2333 Why not just change the rules then? Don't blame it on the consumers.
It also doesn't help that the media and fans push dumb narratives on good players who work hard and focus on the game like Jayson Tatum. Not to mention the officiating is probably the worst it's been in a while. It's a combination of a lot of problems.
Flops killed the game for me, stopped watching years ago when every drive turns into a foul.
But these fans that cry about too much 3s are the ones that cry that Giannis only scores in the paint. Make it make sense
Yeah some of these fans don’t know what they want they cry when it’s contact in the paint 😂
Giannis doesn't just score in the paint, he takes 3s too
Delete the 3 point line.
They gonna have to do it.
ratings are down because people don't watch TV as before, TV will vanish in a couple of decades
No, it's the 3s, the lack defense, the load management, the travels.. how you gonna blame tv.
@@TeamButchMcCray Because he’s right. Linear broadcast television has been on a death spiral for the past decade
@@BlazerManiacNumber96 are NFL ratings down?? I rest my case.
@@TeamButchMcCray NFL ratings have plateaued since the 2010s. People are not watching more football. They're just watching less of everything else. I know you really want this to be a simple discussion with easily digestible talking points, but the reality is there are several contributing factors both within and without the NBA's control. The overall popularity of the NBA has never been bigger, it's only dwindled in the US. Largely because it's simply hard to watch NBA games. Between all the different TV networks and local syndicates, you need like 5 different streaming services to watch. And there's 1,230 games in an NBA season.
@@BlazerManiacNumber96 excuses, excuses, excuses... NBA ratings are down because no one wants to watch that 💩 anymore. It is pretty simple, you're making it complicated. No one wants to see any team anymore.. there's really no need to defend the trash product the NBA office and players have put out. But have at it.
Chuck is right. Scared to really coach the players. He’s right, they will pout and things will short circuit. You’ll be looking at trade requests, poor effort, and bad defense. Extremely unlikable talent in nba. Not a good mix.
The should allow hand checking outside 3 point line
and in paint
this is all just labels. Ive been watching “the better” basketball recently to see where this criticism is coming from and it’s baseless claims. if they didnt have the 3 point label and viewed all jumpers the same we would have nothing to talk abt here. The 80s and 90s were full of ugly and awful contested midrange jumpers that they might as well take 2 steps back and at least have a chance at 3 points.
Every play ending up with someone jacking up a three is ugly. You can literally predict how every play is gonna end up. Might as well turn of the TV and look up the stats later. If you want to defend the NBA losing viewers then be my guest lol.
They should ban the 3 pt shot or give technical if someone shoots more than 2 threes. More power to the people and certain haters!
Stop it bruh that’s dumb😂
The concept of a three point shot was always kinda flawed. Teams get rewarded for forgoing more advanced strategies and physical play in favor of just chucking up threes all game. It’d make more sense to reward accuracy vs distance, like for example any shot that goes in without touching the backboard first is three points, if it touches the backboard it’s two.
The reason I switched off is that there are just way too many games to watch and keep up with. My life is too busy to watch hundreds of games of nba
Curry changed the game bro, he got everybody thinking they can hit from anywhere
