    I spent many years extracting honey in a dilapidated shed with a hot knife and a hobbyist's extractor - no running water, no heat/AC and no way to keep bees out. I then strained and bottled in my kitchen. What an enormous waste of time and effort!! I finally got to a point of all-in or all-out with beekeeping - either I invest in a proper honey house and equipment like yours or I get out, altogether. I chose the latter. Congratulations on your fantastic honey house and spectacular collection of equipment!! Thanks for creating and sharing another great video!!

      Thanks Jwoodyr! Sometimes I think like the latter may be bliss! LOL

    I think you should run the honey pump. Place a sump between the wax press and the extractor. Then, use the pump to move the honey to the settling tank. No more lifting buckets of honey into the settling tank.
    Either way, nice set-up and great video.

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  2 роки тому +4

      Yes. That's the standard way. Decant from extractor/wax cappings press into sump then pump to settling tank, but I just don't have the floor space for pump/sump and find I can more than keep up with decanting 30 litre buckets as the uncapping is automated and frees me up to move the buckets

    Wow, Laurence, such an amazing setup you've got! Lyson is top quality brand, so if you treat it well it will last forever (and it looks that you do, because it's shiny as if it was brand new). Also the distribution of the room is very clever, you've maximized the space so well. Bravo!

  • @davedouglass6

    Hi Laurence, the top comes off the extractor quite easily. You can then lift out the spindle. Not necessary in most seasons obvs, but does allow a very thorough clean. Great room, great video 👍

    Hi Lawrence, very professional setup you’ve got for yourself there mate, looks like you have payed for the very best yes lyson is top notch and well made none of the plastic equipment you see on some sites , If I was 30 years younger and had a lot of your get up and go we could be in competition with each other but alas I’m a lot older and I’m happy with my 17 hives and my second hand honey spinner I’ve converted to take a drill instead of hand cranking. Thank you Lawrence for all your hard work and dedication you have for your subscribers and all the good work you do with your bees.

    V nice.. looks like you have quite a decent production capacity.. but since you ask.. I would have my extractor situated higher so I could run it into my storage buckets directly.

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  2 роки тому

      How do you mean? Honey out of the extractor needs filtering prior to to storage, else it needs filtering post storage. We in fact do both as a double precaution but the extractor can get fit a 80lb bucket underneath it? Why does it need to be any higher?

    Very nice set up Laurence. In the process of upgrading my equipment and have gone with a 32 frame Logar automated extractor & a Swienty Dana Api Matic 1000 with 45cm turntable. I will be speaking to Abelo about a creamer, Apimelter & settling tank. Can’t wait to get it all into use 👍.

    I've been looking at building a shed to extract in as the 3x2m utility room is a bit on the wee side 😂 I'm going through the building regs and was wondering how you got round the waste water stuff? My understanding is we really don't want to put wax down the normal drains. Do you collect it somewhere?

    Hi Laurence, Great video thanks. Question: What would you suggest the minimum distance from bees to a honey room? I have very limited space. Thinking of splitting the apiary with a high net fence - bees on one side and shed for extracting , jarring and candles on the other. I would be interested to hear your thoughts buzz. Is it crazy to even consider close proximity to the bees?!

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  10 місяців тому +1

      Absolutely - do everything you can to avoid this. It will be a nightmare come extracting time rendering the shed mostly unusable

    you can use LEAN and isx sigma methodologies and conduct time and motion studies to improve the efficiency....i think the height of the first machine is more and if there is space the loosener can be in placed in between the capping press and the extractor

    It took me 10 hours to extract, jar and label my 4 supers in August last year 🙃

    I have mostly national supers but recently bought commercial supers as they are easier assembled and hold more honey in one lift compared to national, so I am nearly half and half now. All deeps national BTW. I hope to expand more and more every year and will probably need an uncapper at some point. How big was your operation when you got the uncapper? and is there ones out there that would take commercial and national?
    I seen a chain uncapper that I think might work.

Next thing I know half my house is filled with things like a honey extractor and other smaller pieces of equipment that take up a lot of space in my living room lol.
