The new Streets of Rage 4 DLC was just released, and it made a great game a lot better. They added Shiva, Max, Estel, and SOR3 Roo as playable characters, made a higher difficulty mode that you see here, a roguelike survival mode, a training mode, character balance changes, alternate colors, and new blitz, special, and star attacks for every character in the game. And it only costs $8 (with a 10% launch discount right now)! They went above and beyond with this update in my opinion. It's an incredible value.
I was looking forward to playing Shiva the most, so I had to try Mania+ with him first. He's an absolute beast, and easily one of the best (and most fun) characters in the game. I only experimented with his two movesets a little, but his flying kick blitz attack is definitely better than the final crash, and I think his second star attack that summons the phantoms is more useful for clearing out screens of enemies. His other star attack is better for extending your combo, but that's not really necessary. I think his other forward+special might be better than the one I use in this video, since this attack leaves him vulnerable, but I haven't really tried it out yet. This attack is still decent though, you just need to be careful with how you use it.
Mania+ is a fun new addition. The score requirement for the S-rank seems to be the same as Mania, so all of the extra enemies can make it easier to reach (although that also means there's more opportunities to get hit and lose a big combo...) For the most part, it's not that much harder than Mania, but some stages can get a little crazy. Like the area before the Ms. Y fight in the final stage, I was still getting overwhelmed while using both of my star attacks lol.
This run had a few bad deaths and costly combo drops, but I knew a no death clear wouldn't happen without quite a bit of practice. Maybe I'll try that in the future.

The beat em up genre is alive and well. SOR4, Ninja Warriors Once Again, Capcom Beat Em Up Bundle, and the upcoming TMNT game. Hopefully this keeps going because I love that era of gaming.

I really enjoy shiva's new variety of ways to attack your opponents, he's truly the weapon.
Note that Shiva doesn't pick up weapons... He just kicks them into the air and launches them at enemies.
A skilled warrior like Shiva doesn't need a weapons to win.

Everyone can cancel moves with defensive special. Shiva a monster? I don’t think that’s what you’re really seeing. I think Iconoclast is the monster.
@@chunkylover5367 Right lemme be more specific - you can cancel shit like Max' slide with the defensive special which is a godsend because being utterly helpless post-blitz is what makes characters like Blaze, Adam and Axel is needlessly frustrating. I kinda get why they did that since the Bloodborne style health recovery system means defensive specials are potentially more broken than they would be in a conventional beat em up, but it's still annoying to have to sit there and watch yourself get hit with no recourse. Though Max' spinning vortex is just plain dumb
I freaking love Shiva and knew if he came out as DLC he would be my No 1 character in the game...and he is so freaking better than I could ever have hoped for! The combos the moves the specials! And air juggle! I was in love soon as I first tried him out!
They move so damn fast on mania. Shiva is even faster. Sheesh.

Never played a SOR game before, got this yesterday together with the DLC and Shiva was love at first sight right from the character select screen. Love seeing what's possible to do with him! 🤩
The SOR4 team just make the game much much better, all content from only $8 is a dream, also as a fan of SOR3 they add much new things i was asked like you now can roll with the weapons or the star move of Axel sor3 use the sword and of course the survival gives the game a infinite replayability!
If you dont buy the game yet, now is the best oportunity.
You can also play roo from SOR3
@@DatBoiRatchet yes, as a big fan of sor games (Sor Remake included) playing roo dont make me feel that initial stepback of sor4 , with roo feels good run , roll up/down and all the moveset from sor3 , and now with the sor4 combo system!! that is what this game must be from day 1.

this game has an interesting effect on me when i watch a long gameplay or when i actually play it, even though i have been just playing it or watching it for 30 minutes somehow it feels like it has been hours, could not say why. Anyway, awesome play ma dude :D

It's really interesting that Shiva in this Game as a boss was a total fail, But as a playable character instead of being nerfed he is a freaking monster...😱😱He is literally a one man army, a force to be reckoned...
I say it was about time we got a break from unlockable boss characters being mediocre, as "that meme" suggested. Shiva looks just as fast as Blaze, maybe faster. I'm now interested in playing as him. I main as SoR 4 Blaze.

stage 4 was kicking the living hell out of me. Seeing you tear through it was such beautiful therapy. Currently up to Y Tower and Mania+ is a wonderful mix of challenging, frustrating, and therapeutic puzzle untangling.

Shiva's redemption arc of villain to hero was character development not common of the 90's era games. I think that is the reason fans like him as much as Axel.

That wasn't even something I planned lol. While I was fighting him I just noticed that the top part of that area is pretty tight, so you can infinitely air combo him without him getting knocked away.

Congratulations! You are a boss! I tried to play in "hard" difficulty and I don't succeed at the "Chinatown" level. On "Mega-drive", I succeeded to finish the first "Streets of rage" in "very hard" difficulty !

Thanks! I used a couple of his unlockable moves, the blitz and star special. His unlockable forward+special might be a little better than his default one too, but I didn't try it out much. All of his attacks are fun to use though.

I just can't decide which of the two blitzes i prefer. Final Crash is a classic but this "Liu Kang" kick looks tremendously fun to use!
While final crash is cool, it sadly dosen't have near the amount of utility that the flying kick has, not to mention final crash putting you in a state of voulnerability after coming down after the move against uppercutting foes. Just try spirit palm followed upp with flying kick directly after and you know what I mean. Not even the Goro's (white suit karate guy who counters) can stand against that combo and gets an instant guard break and the flying kick will land all its hits on them, at the same time retaining the energy spent on the spirit palm. Very dirty indeed.

I knew this was coming! Yes Shiva 4 is a beast! Also shout out to the new color palates and blaze s 2nd moveset! Definitely a great dlc already spent 6 hours playing it. I ll probably get a mania + clear myself here soon
Curious about this 2nd Blaze moveset. How do you select it and how does it work?
I haven't even experimented with any of the other character's new moves yet. Going back and trying everything out to find the ideal combinations makes the game feel more fresh. It's an awesome addition, and undersold in the marketing imo.
@@iconoclast575 Ah that makes sense. Yeah balance changes can often change how it feels to play a familiar character even better. Like all the changes to Axel so far have improved his fun-factor easily.
@@QueenSydon You select the moveset when you choose your character but you have to play Survival mode to unlock the moves.
@@mitu123Copper Nice. That sounds cool, and I like that survival has an added incentive to it. Personally I'm not a fan of challenge modes that don't unlock anything.

they made the game very exciting and difficult too!😭
They made Mania+ too difficult at points that it's tough to survive unless you get lucky since it's a cheap difficulty. Thankfully I got all S Ranks on it for stage select pretty quickly.

Iconoclast, what are your favorite beat em ups for solo play?
Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon, Final Fight, Warriors of Fate, Armored Warriors, Sengoku 3, Streets of Rage 4, Battle Circuit, Zero Team. I think that would be my top tier. I like almost everything I've played though, so it's kind hard to pick favorites to be honest.

May be a stupid question, but what causes his different throw? There's the more common leg slam throw, and there's the judo throw and I can't figure out what causes the latter.
Shiva in Streets of Rage 4 is the only selectable boss character I know of, that's not nerfed and actually stronger than his cpu counterpart. I'm glad the devs decided to let loose and let us have fun with this particular character. He's literally a God in this game. This is how an unlockable should be and feel like. The characters are fun. I wish they included enemy characters like Streets of Rage Remake V5.2 and totally cut loose. Why not 🤷♂️ I'd love to play as the Twins, Baron, any of the other bosses , just for fun.
He is nerfed. Many of his infinite combos were removed. Still the best, and still has infinite combos.

It's his alternate blitz attack. You can unlock it by playing survival mode.
