Almost as if basketball isn't that big worldwide. Sure Jordan was but rest of the NBA doesn't even compare to football. They have Messi as their athlete, they're fine.
I'm glad Nike got him and he had input on the shoes, if Adidas just matched the offer and didnt let him have input who knows what wack shit we might have instead 😂
Funny, considering Kobe went to Adidas before Nike, a lot of people knew how the Kobe 2 threw him off so hard without any input (those unreleased Kobe 3s look absolutely surreal and he made the right call to bail on them). Adidas, at the time, really didn't know how to work closely (and by fully) with their athletes.
Reminds me of when the Hershey's Co. was going to discontinue Reese's pieces. At the time Steven Spielberg was working on the film, "E.T." and he approached M&M Mars about using M&Ms in the movie but they weren't interested. So he approached Hershey's and ended up saving my favorite snack.
Maybe someone at Adidas thought it was an incredible opportunity, but like Mike said, they weren't strong enough in the States yet. They just weren't ready at the time.
The thing is you don't get ready without taking chances. This is the chance to define two brands. One became a name the other is remembered for passing on the greatest basketball player of all time
@@themaker2149 That is true, but in business you're also constrained by reality. So glad they didn't. The swoosh logo has always been the best logo of all. Jordans also would've looked like garbage cause Tinker was not working under Adidas.
You should watch the movie "Air" it came out in 2023, and it goes into great detail as to how Jordan became the face of Nike and the other shoe deals that were on the table.
Adidas really dropped the ball several times with great athletes who most became Hall of Famers...ppl should've been fired just for not paying attention

@user-di2qo7he3z And the toaster design might've also played into that too. Those unreleased Kobe 3s looked way too weird even for him to wear! Seriously, it really looks too weird that even Nike's Alpha Project from the early 2000s with that weirdness was alot better than what Adidas did at the time!
Poor MJ, he really loved Adidas and in the earlier days so did everyone else. The fact that he even went up to Adidas to try and get the same deal is insane.
I watched that 6 part series about the Lakers when Magic joined the team. It showed him turning down Nike for Converse. Said it cost him to lose 5 billion dollars. Jordan made the right decision to go with Nike and the rest his history.
This was about 1984. Nike was basically unheard of outside US if at all. Would rather go for Converse that time. Adidas was dominating outside of US, but the founder recently died and mgmt was chaotic that time. In the meantime, Adidas sees MJ as a "short" rookie still needing to prove himself in the Pro world. They would rather bank on a tall - center-type player. That's what separated the foresight of Nike vs. all the other brands at that very early stage.
