My favorite singer today, Gigi de Lana. One of the 3 Queens from the Philippines. She got so many amazing covers but not a lot of originals sadly. But I don't really care 'cause she OWNS the 80s. The other two Queens are of course Morrisette Amon and Katrina Velarde.
They actually have a whole album of original songs that came out over a year ago. Strange bc they don't promote their album & when they do gigs (& they've been doing a lot), I heard they are not allowed to play them, so they perform covers. A lot of her fans don't even know they have an album. From what I heard, it has something to do with Gigi being signed by ABS-CBN/Star Music, but her band isn't. But she wants to keep her band with her. So their gigs are independent of these companies, they're doing it on their own to earn money. There is a full concert of them that is produced by Star Music where the whole concert is all of their originals. The video was released about a month ago but that concert happened a year ago, & not too many people know about this. The music industry in the Philippines operates differently compared to US. Over here in the US, you write the song, you own it. But for some reason, over there, these companies seem to have more control of them. I feel they helped them produce the album but decided not to spend money promoting & marketing the album. I don't know really what's going on, but it's sad. Most of the songs are in Tagalog. I just tried to look for the concert video & I can't even find it now. If anyone knows the exact title of the video, please let me know. You can post link but sometimes UA-cam will delete comment thinking it's spam.
@@TripTipsPodcast Yeah & they don't really talk about it. I just read comments from some fans trying to explain this. Actually when they do interviews, Gigi has nothing but good things to say about Star Music, her management company. Shes so grateful..It's because they signed her awhile back when she was just starting to get somewhat popular. They were broke during the plandemic lockdowns bc they had no gigs, everthing was shut down. That's when they started doing livestreams on UA-cam & FB, & their channel blew up. That's when they got noticed by these management company. Otherwise she was just ignored for many years. She was joining singing contests on TV so people kind of knew her, but only as someone joining contests. There are so many talented singers in the Philippines but few get signed, & so if they are signed, they are so thankful. There are 2 companies that control the entertainment industry over there (not just music but TV & movies as well), & thats ABS-CBN & GMA.

They do have some original but it’s mostly in native Filipino Tagalog. Most of their UA-cam videos are from 1-2 hour livestreams where they take requests from a song list which is why you can see her glancing at lyrics on her IPad.

My favorite singer today, Gigi de Lana. One of the 3 Queens from the Philippines. She got so many amazing covers but not a lot of originals sadly. But I don't really care 'cause she OWNS the 80s.

They actually have a whole album of original songs that came out over a year ago. Strange bc they don't promote their album & when they do gigs (& they've been doing a lot), I heard they are not allowed to play them, so they perform covers. A lot of her fans don't even know they have an album. From what I heard, it has something to do with Gigi being signed by ABS-CBN/Star Music, but her band isn't. But she wants to keep her band with her. So their gigs are independent of these companies, they're doing it on their own to earn money. There is a full concert of them that is produced by Star Music where the whole concert is all of their originals. The video was released about a month ago but that concert happened a year ago, & not too many people know about this. The music industry in the Philippines operates differently compared to US. Over here in the US, you write the song, you own it. But for some reason, over there, these companies seem to have more control of them. I feel they helped them produce the album but decided not to spend money promoting & marketing the album. I don't know really what's going on, but it's sad. Most of the songs are in Tagalog. I just tried to look for the concert video & I can't even find it now. If anyone knows the exact title of the video, please let me know. You can post link but sometimes UA-cam will delete comment thinking it's spam.

@@TripTipsPodcast Yeah & they don't really talk about it. I just read comments from some fans trying to explain this. Actually when they do interviews, Gigi has nothing but good things to say about Star Music, her management company. Shes so grateful..It's because they signed her awhile back when she was just starting to get somewhat popular. They were broke during the plandemic lockdowns bc they had no gigs, everthing was shut down. That's when they started doing livestreams on UA-cam & FB, & their channel blew up. That's when they got noticed by these management company. Otherwise she was just ignored for many years. She was joining singing contests on TV so people kind of knew her, but only as someone joining contests. There are so many talented singers in the Philippines but few get signed, & so if they are signed, they are so thankful. There are 2 companies that control the entertainment industry over there (not just music but TV & movies as well), & thats ABS-CBN & GMA.
