Here's a tip that I unfortunately forget: when dry brushing fragile pieces, support them from behind with your finger(s). Can't tell you how many arms, swords, etc that I thought were sturdier than they actually were.
Yeah I should have mentioned that as I had to do that with the top of the witches staff 🙂

One thing I've tried recently is drybrushing brown + bone instead of grey+white, feels like it makes colours look a little more natural for some models
This is probably because brown and bone colors use red pigment while white and gray typically use blue pigments. With bone and brown you get a warmer hue in your colors 😊
Love all your slap chop videos. Ive been inspired by them to take up painting, after not having painted since the late 80's. Thanks a lot for such fantastic content and encouraging us all just to, have a go! Obviously!

Another tip I recommend is to experiment with your black and grey steps. For example I tried a very dark brown and beige and I love it. Reds, oranges, yellows, and most importantly skin tones look fantastic; while colder colors have a bit more vibrancy to them.
I do need to get some other colour primers and see the results, cheers for that 🙂
I was just thinking I would dry brush my orks green and white. Kinda hoping to get some more character to the paint job.
Also it will change how the cloth and armour look. Hope it's cool in the end😂

Recently been wanting to get back into painting. Bought a load of paints. Been mulling over which primer to use. As you said you've tried a load and opted for the one in thew video, I'll be giving it a shot. Cheers!

Slapchop was my gateway drug to drybrushing everything lol. I play Space Wolves and started batching them out by giving them an all over coat of "The fang" and then drybrushing Russ Grey then a gentler layer of Fenrisian Grey up to a very gingerly applied layer of Blue Horror. When I go in with contrast paints and speed paints it lends a bit of coldness to those areas.
In the spirit of sharing things we learned. I would recommend trying to slapchop a model but rather than using grayscale select colors. It lends to the temperature of the model, is the only way I can think to describe it and looks cool. Sorry to ramble but one of my more recent experiences with really breaking away was when my wife needed some Pink Horrors painted. They aren't my army so I tend to use hers to experiment with painting. I primed them with a dark Maroon before dry brushing on Pink horror, then a 2Pink Horror 1White mix and finished with the light edge brush in Blue horror. The Blue horror put them over the top. (I went nuts and gave them a gentle sprits from directly above with the airbrush of a blue to pink colorshift paint they look cool but hurt my eyes now) Before hitting the contrast paint spots.
You ramble on as much as you want, I love hearing what people are doing as sometimes I hear things Ive never done and then go give it a try 🙂

These really came out fantastic! I got the 2.0 complete set recently, and I really have dived in .. I seem to always have a hard time choosing colors..

i would add another step to this add highlights, you can make the slapchop go from about a 6/10 to a 8/10 just by adding in some lighter colours on top or even just simple edge highlights

Must say it's thanks to you I got into painting 3d printed artisan keycaps and I love it with slap chop :D Would like to ask if you maybe can do a video where you'll show like maybe 10 base speedpaint colors? I have some speed paints but want to expand colors and I don't really know where to start with 2.0 paints :D And sadly can't afford all of them

I definitely don't like overly black contrast elements on faces. To remedy, I would avoid black as a starting primer color, at least for faces.
And to be honest, I don't think that black has much value on small minis, as it obscures detail where every little bump is precious.
Instead, I think it makes more sense to prime with the darkest color you intend for the mini's color palette. At the very least, a dark gray instead of a black. But for schemes that are earth toned, a dark brown often can look great.
That said, if you're going for a grim-dark look, then black is your go-to.

Is it really important to do circular motions with the dry brushing? In your video here you mention it but then you don’t really do that (especially when you were doing the white layer), but it turned out great.

at 12:10 you say the paint handles can be downloaded from your Patreon. I happen to be one of your Spruegineers and I can't seem to find it. All other files like the dry brush pallet and the Single Display Diorama are easy to find. Can you say where these STLs are hiding?

I sometimes think the stark contrast between the black and the white stands out too much when I see slapchop. The shadows seem too dark and thick to me, has anyone tried a mid grey prime with dry brushed with a light grey then white. I’d imagine it’ll lighten the model and make to transition from shadows to highlights less jarring but I’ve no idea if that’s the case.
what color for dry brush, you use? My ist only grey XD after grey and white brushing :(
Great tips! Curious - how “damp” does the brush need to be when using the moistening pad? How many drops of water do you put in it?

Plastic palete will become gray/white very soon. How to deal with it? Paint it with some dark color all the time?
@miniature hobbyist Getting ready to paint a Mekboy workshop if you were painting it would you slapchop it or just airbrush it with a metal color then go in with regular acrylic paint for things that are not metal first time painting terrain piece
For terrain/diorama pieces I am now airbrushing, using dirty down rust and dry brushing and using normal paints to pick out small items. Slapchop might work but you would use lots of a large piece lol 🙂
What printer do u use?
The #1 slapchop tip I've gotten that has made several times as much impact as any other is to use oil washes. They massively increase definition and contrast, and take virtually no skill or effort. They do take a bit of bravery though, since your nice mini will look like you dropped it in a muddy puddle until you wipe the excess away.
Oil washes are neat but never used them with slapchop, do you wash after fully painting the model?
@@Adunapheth Yeah. My go-to is an airbrush zenithal, then transparent/contrast paints, then an oil wash. Wipe the wash off the raised areas after 15-30 minutes. You can then optionally go back in for a few highlights, then finish it out with a nice unifying matte varnish. It's very fast (If you don't mind letting the oil wash dry overnight).
The slapchop existed but im pretty sure your channel was the one that started the snowball

Also with all your improvements, would you be willing to try to paint a normal model with only folklore paint and your most basic tools, to show off how you changed and go over what you would change after you finished?
Yeah, I think I am more of a Dont Try This kinda guy lol, I am currently painting some models using normal paints and thinning paint, it is trickier and a longer process, should get the video out wednesdayish next week, fingers crossed it doesnt look too bad lol 🙂
