Yeah, nobody saw that one coming. Not even with Clara's confused statement that she knows all the Doctor's faces, but doesn't recognise that one - even though he has his back to her. Then when it's revealed who he is, I think it's more surprising & shocking as to who the actor playing this new Doctor is, rather than the fact there is another Doctor we know nothing about.

It was especially great after all the weeks or months of speculation about what the Doctor's name was going to turn out to be, that the actual twist of the episode was some previously unknown version of the Doctor rather than that the Doctor's name had been Steve the entire time.

One that I would put on the list is the revelation of Missy's identity at the end of Dark Water. Everyone thought she was either The Rani or Romana reborn. I remember myself being shocked that they went with a gender swapped Master and thank the universe they did because it gave us one of the best versions of The Master and one of the best Who characters overal. David Tennant's return is really not much of a surprise and is in fact the most logical choice. His doctor was always known for say "I don't want to go" and The Curator, a future version of the Doctor using the 4th Doctors face (Tom Baker) said that he would be revisiting some of the old faces. Because Ncuti had a scheduling conflict and couldn't shoot this season, they needed someone who would rekindle the dying spark left by Chibnall's disaster. David Tennant, the Doctor who didn't want to go, is the best pick to fullfill all the criteria.

I always remember being really concerned at the end of the series 1 episode Aliens of London, not knowing how the doctor was going to survive, what was going to happen to rose and harriet jones, and how was jackie going to escape from the slitheen in her kitchen! 😂
Also the ending for the series 3 episode Human Nature was gripping just because the episodes themselves were so unpredictable, what was going to happen to martha and nurse redfern, and would john smith return to being the doctor? 😊
But seeing the tenth doctor start to regenerate at the end of The Stolen Earth was just a ridiculously clever cliffhanger! 😊

In 'The Power of the Doctor', the sequence where the Master (aka Rasputin) has the Doctor trapped, surrounded by Cybermen and Daleks, then breaks into a Dance routine to 'Rah, Rah, Rasputin was such an enjoyable WTF moment. One cliffhanger that should’ve made the list is Ten’s regeneration in Stolen Earth after he got shot by the Dalek! “It’s too late… I’m regenerating!” That cliffhanger had all of us viewers hooked for an entire week asking ourselves if David Tennant did indeed decide to leave the show after three series (which he did announce a few months later). It was almost as gripping as Trek’s The Best of Both Worlds, Part 1’s cliffhanger!

The "Bad Wolf" reveal at the end of "Turn Left" even had a real world manifestation, with every word on the cover of "Doctor Who Magazine" being printed as "Bad Wolf", all cleverly hidden under the graphics on the plastic bag that issue came in. I'd have loved to have been a fly on the wall during the conferences between the folks in Cardiff and the staff at Panini, coordinating everything to pull that one off. Best DWM gimmick ever!

Don't know if we can make suggestions here for future top 10 lists but I'll give it a shot. Would it be possible at some point to make a top 10 "Most influential Companions" list? Not most popular, because everybody's idea of the best Companion is subjective, but which ones have had the most influence on the Doctor themselves and the overall storyline as a whole. Obviously, those who have been on the show the longest would have an advantage being able to influence events more and be involved in more story arcs. I have a biased number one of my own but I won't divulge their identity here, but I would certainly hope they make the list! Don't know if it would only include New Who Companions, or some classic ones as well, the obvious choice there would be Sara Jane Smith, of course. Thoughts on this? And if this isn't the right place to put in a suggestion where can I send it? Thanks. 🙂

Then I was wondering why the clothes changing as well and finally, the return of Ten where The Doctor and I had exactly the same response and both said 'what?' at exactly the same times.
A sad story, but as a proud Whovian, I will make no apologies for my nerdiness.

Not sure exactly where, the ABC wasn't the most up to date, I think we got episodes a year or two after they were shown in the UK. As for Hartnell's clothes changing, something I only learned about myself despite being deeply invested in the show most of my life, it happened whether we saw it or not, and no amount of "lived experience" will change thatunless you've got a TARDIS parked in the backyard. There's nothing wrong with incorporating new information into our world view, it's how we grow as people, but denying facts because you didn't seen them (there should a video confirming it here on UA-cam) is only going to blind you to new experiences.

@@nigelhickman2274 To be honest, I wasn't sure whether you were serious or not. That being said, I've never let anyone get away with denying facts about things that cannot be argued with, like science and certain historical facts. Trivia about TV shows is easier because the evidence is usually available. The trick is to not let ego get in the way of learning. That's where a lot of people in the US, the ones fond out wearing red hats with outdated slogans on them, are in trouble. Their ego won't let them recognize the fact the person they, erm, hung their hat on, is really gone and never coming back. They cling on to their delusion the same way the church hung on to their beliefs when people like Copernicus, Galileo and Darwin started making sense of the madness that is the real world. I'm lucky, in that years of being treated as a medical curiosity (I've a couple of rare medical conditions) saw me displayed like a lab rat, a condition I had to let go of the ego to accept in order to try and get to the bottom of the issues. :P

Landing on the planet Xeos(possibly Xeros) exploring a vast Museum. The Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki come across their future selves preserved as displays in this Museum.
The Mind Robber(2nd Doctor) ending part 1
Having seemingly escaped a strange noise engulfs the Tardis crew. Suddenly the Tardis breaks apart. Jamie and Zoey cling onto the Tardis console as it floats then spins into nothing. Meanwhile the Doctor spins slowly. The console spins away and replaced by smoke.
    The War Games(2nd Doctor)
Final moments of episode 10, the Doctor put on trial by his own pepole(Timelords). Found guilty his regeneration is forced upon him. Fading into darkness we see for the last time the 2nd Doctor and no clear sign of the next Doctor.
Carnival of monsters(3rd Doctor) part 1 ending
The Doctor and Jo Grant's first Tardis trip now the Doctor's exile had been lifted. Appears to be on the SS Bernice a cargo ship sailing the Indian ocean in 1926. Only things are far from normal as a hand reaches out and lifts the Tardis up.
The Android Invasion(4th Doctor) episode 2
The Tardis has brought the Doctor and Sarah Jane to the sleepy village of Devesham. By the end of episode 2 more questions than answers from this deserted village. As it's revealed that the Doctors companion isn't what she appears to be.
The Deadly Assassin(4th Doctor) endings episode 1 and 3
The Doctor without a companion returns to Gallifrey. A premonition appears to show a tragedy in the making. By the end of part one has the Doctor done this terrible deed. Part 3 in the Matrix the Doctor is facing an opponent a freeze frame with all not well.

River Song being Amy's daughter is simple. River's timeline runs in the opposite direction to the Doctor's, and presumably Amy's too. So everything makes sense.

Great video, as usual. The cliffhanger I'm longing for is a future multi-doctor special that ends with Christopher Eccleston teased... But only if they deliver in the next episode. I believe in miracles, and I'm patient, and since they've somehow gotten us all to ignore it when prior incarnations age, which is completely illogical, I won't care how the f*1@ old Eccleston is as long as he's there. I can wait.

I was very fortunate in this particular instance because when there's something I want to see no matter what I don't read up about it and generally try to avoid anything about it (yep, I know I"m weird) but that meant when David Tennant appeared at the end of The Power of the Doctor it was a *total* surprise. I mean I didn't even know he was coming back in any form. Mind. Utterly. Blown.

Don't worry Ellie, a year will pass quicker than a Blink. :D You know how wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey time can be. :D
While I'm happily on board with everything in this list, the moment from new Who that got me the most excited was in Time of the Doctor. Specifically, it was when the regeneration went into Smith (who's surprised Pikachu face was totally delightful), and I realized before it was stated that our favourite Time Lord had been given a new regen cycle. Being a literal life long fan (seriously cannot remember not watching the show in my 50+ years), it excited me because I knew it meant at least another 12 actors in the role. I could never have anticipated going through four in eight years, but never mind. It meant a future when one seemed oddly uncertain, given the talk going around at the time.

    • @y_fam_goeglyd

"Santa Claus" is a relatively recent usage in the UK. He was always Father Christmas until my own kids were old enough to know what he represented, in the mid-90s. A lot of us people older than about 30 will still default to FC, there are those either side of 30 who'll swap around a lot, but the 25 and under gang tend towards using "Americanisms" far more frequently.
I'm not saying that _no one_ over 30 uses Santa, or no one under 25 uses FC, but it's a generalisation and it's distinctly personal. But I would agree with Ellie that the majority of the population (at least those who celebrate Xmas) still prefer Father Christmas. This will undoubtedly change over time as all things do.

I'd kind of guessed that Whittaker would regenerate into Tennant. Not because of spoils or some AHA! moment while watching, but because of the logistics of filming & broadcasting.
David Tennant, Catherine Tate & Bernard Cribbens had all already been confirmed as returning for the 60th. Officially released photos don't appear to show any other previous characters. Then it was announced Tennant would be appearing in 3 special episodes. At that point, Ncuti Gatwa was still some time away from being revealed as the next Doctor.
Given that it takes around 9 months filming, then extra for post production, and filming for the 60th had only then begun, I thought that they would be cutting it a bit close to the new Doctor, provisionally scheduled for Xmas '23 or NY '24. Which is when I first began to suspect that there was going to be more to Tennant's return, other than to celebrate the 60th.
And then Gatwa's casting was announced. Filming with Tennant was still ongoing, while it was revealed that it would be a few months before Gatwa would begin filming for his first series. And auditions were still ongoing for his companion.
By that point, I knew there was no way they'd be able to finish filming & editing a full series for the provisional date that Gatwa was to make his debut at the time the BBC & Russell T Davies were saying. It was then that my suspicion that Tennant was returning as the Doctor proper - not just as 10 for the anniversary celebrations - became cemented. Obviously I didn't know for certain & for all I knew I was thinking in Cloud Cuckoo terms.
The more I thought about it though, the more certain I became. Production logistics aside, I knew there was no way that Ncuti Gatwa's first, full proper outing as the Doctor would be in the anniversary episode, opposite a very popular, former Doctor. It wouldn't be fair, as it should be about HIS debut, not the return of an old favourite. RTD & John Barrowman had previously stated that Jack was written out, when it was confirmed Eccleston was leaving, so as not to overshadow the new Doctor. And Jack was the companion! If they did that then, I doubted that they'd have the new boy eclipsed by the old guard now.
So when Tennant appeared on that cliff edge (very dodgy place to regenerate!) I wasn't shocked. Maybe a little surprised, but not dramatically so, since I was already half expecting it. What I didn't know then & still don't (obviously), is how everything is linked with Gatwa's debut. It's a smart move to potentially have TWO new Doctors, at the same time, as it doesn't distract from the fact we know 15 is already there, lurking in the background, adding to the anticipation & excitement of seeing him proper, as the trailers clearly show.

I somehow missed the spoilers of David Tennant returning, so for me, it was completely out of left field. (Although not random or shoddily-done, given how Tom Baker's "The Curator" suggested that he was a future incarnation of the Doctor, and him saying "you'll find yourself revisiting a few of the old faces.")

What, no Daleks emerging from the voidsphere at the end of "Army of Ghosts"? The Doctor apparently regenerating at the end of "The Stolen Earth"? The discovery of the buried TARDIS and Ruth saying, "Hello, I'm the Doctor" in "Fugitive of the Judoon"? (Well, I guess that one wasn't a cliffhanger.) Or, going to classic "Who", the Dalek floating up the stairs at the end of episode 1 of "Remembrance of the Daleks"? Those are some of my all-time favorite "What?"s!
