You are wrong about the college degree. 1. It demonstrates real world ability to finish what was started. 2. Getting a college degree (should) require rapid learning & assimilation of massive amounts of information - which is one of the many skills a Marine Officer needs to have. 3. College experience (as opposed to a technical school) should provide a more worldly view than what most non college grads have. 4. Fundamentally two of the roles of an officer is to do planning and enforce the rules of the organization. Likewise getting a college degree requires planning out and executing a qualifying curriculum.. Lots of people get bachelor’s degrees, very few get to be Marine Officers. If the individual cannot figure out how to get first one, no way are they going to be competitive with peers for a commission.

I'm more for adding other options rather than doing away with the college route altogether. I disagree with your worldly view assertion considering the amount of information that is available via social media, UA-cam, podcasts, blogs, etc. The information that was mainly available to college students through texts and lectures is blown away by 4k video and first-hand perspectives available on-demand.
Trade unions also require planning and executing a curriculum in order to attain journeyman status. It's unfair to write off careers that don't require a degree like they don't have increased responsibility and leadership positions. The difference being, people who enter the workforce immediately are actually dealing with working in the real world while learning to deal with others. Most college students aren't putting in 40+ hours of actual work in a week.

He was in one of the earlier ITC classes and you're right, they did change the pipeline a few times, A&S, pre-A&S, added in communicator roles, etc. I was an instructor at the ol MSOS

GREAT description of OCS (sorta like TBS) in that people are out for themselves and cut-throat competitive. waaaay later then it becomes more team environment.

Love the episode, as always! That said, I have a suggestion (from my background as a tv broadcaster now twitch streamer) - I’m hearing a big discrepancy between your volume of microphone and the guest’s. My guess is that a) you have an amazing microphone that is perfectly situated in front of you b) your guests are using their computer microphones a lot of the time. C) you have your microphone perfectly tuned whereas there’s is what it is. My suggestion to solve this issue would be to either turn your microphone down or move your microphone further from you - that way the input audios of both mic’s will be closer so in post (if you want) you can boost the volume of both microphones. Don’t know if it’s the best solution but it will work! Keep up the hard work on the show and congratulations on finally graduating Journalism School! 🎉

Why does an infantryman need to be educated in the classics? In combat, officers must lead with a full understanding of historical morality and combat ethics. An officer is the educated moral compass.
For the record, I retired a LDO LtColonel, but I was self-educated in the classics and humanities, political science, and history.

It was a bad example. My point was that people that went straight to the workforce should also be considered for officer positions. In the internet age, a four year degree is no longer required to show competence or leadership when looking for the future crop of officers.

@@FormerActionGuys it’s a small world. I was also an infantry officer at 2/8 but from 2017 through 2019. It’s interesting to listen to what the battalion did during the OIF time period.

The British don't really require a person to have a degree to be an officer. They do put you through about 3 semesters at Sandhurst or Dartmouth ( Navy). They have unarguably some of the finest officers in the world.
OK jarheads if you want to know how a tank works the absolute last person to ask is a guy with a biology degree ASK A TANK MECHANIC.
That's from a guy with a Biology degree.
