About Wasteland 2 Directors Cut:
Wasteland 2 is Post Apocalyptic, Tactical Role-Playing Game from inXile Entertainment. A sequel to the classic RPG Wasteland [a 1988 post-apocalyptic computer role-playing game] which was the predecessor of the more widely known Fallout series. In Wasteland 2 you control a group of four Desert Rangers and up to three Non-Player Characters. The game pits you against the hard wastes from the onset; you will have to use your wits, brawn, smack talking and well explosives to make your way through.
This new, 'Directors Cut; version improves the graphics, UI, adds additional voice over work, a more refined combat system and much much more.

Just finished downloading this on my ps4 and went to make up my chars I knew before finishing the first one I would need help. Not knowing how the skills and what not would affect gameplay made it hard to make the squad, so I went looking and found you and I'm so happy I did find you. Mal I have watched it yes I'll need to watch them again. And I had the char creation vid playing on my iPad as I made my chars I copied your chars as I had no idea what was what. I'll might make up a new team at some point when I learn the in's and out's of this game. Loving it so far on the pic version can you adjust the font size. I can on the ps4 thank god.

This is just great never really had problems with combat but building a team that does not become useless in the long run. Still watched the video great thing about is how simple you keep this. Many people try to show off with overusing lets say "pro talk" but you explain things easy and natural good job.

I just want to thank you for making this video. I rented this when it first came out and I have to admit that I simply did not get it and wrote it off. Now I downloaded it again from Game Pass and and still did not get it. Until I ran across your videos. Now I can play for more than and hour without being wiped out as I now understand the mechanics of the game.

I had Wasteland 2 sitting in my library for a while and tinkered around with it. I decided to wait til later to actually play it and then the DC came out. So, I decided to play it instead. Thanks for the advice Mal 😊 I played the original when it was brand new 😉 yep I'm old Lol wishing someone would do a reboot of Bullfrog's Syndicate, I work doing concept art and texture work and just finished a major project so after quite awhile away decided to look through steams catalog and find something to play for the sheer enjoyment of it , generally I get games for the sole purpose of looking for ideas and inspiration extremely happy I found this one and even happier that you made these tuts thanks bro 😊

Damn I made a good party but didn't know I wasn't supposed to go to the Leve L'Up mine so early in the game. Mayne that's why its called literally "LEVEL UP". Because you need more health to kill some badgers.

hi, question here. how will i know the enemies line or radius of sight? specially when i am positioning my squad, the combat will initiate out of nowhere that always caught my boys off guard. thanks for the guide!

Is there a reliable way to tell how close you can get before the enemy starts combat? Most encounters you are KOS, I want to know just how close I can get before they attack first and I lose my advantage.

How do you zoom out that far? Is that pc exclusive? The camera is way to close on my game for me.
Also how do break up your group for individual assignments?
since i play on easy, i try and just blitzkreig combat; i rush in with 2-3 of my closer ranged units, while my sniper and maybe a medic-type unit, for emergencies, stay back. i do the same playstyle in x-com and it never lets me down

Hey, Mal I noticed you have your leader as a shotgun user. Are shotguns of any use in the game (is it worth having at least one character skilled in using them)? or is an assault rifle a more effective route?
Addison you may want to check out the 'quick start' guide for deeper recommendations but I would say overall you are MUCH better having another AR weapons user. Good luck out in the wastes!

Good video, well done. I just have some basic questions that maybe you covered but I must have missed. When you click End Turn, is that just for the one person or for the group? The action points listed, is that for one person or the group? I just started playing and got to my first combat and totally screwed it up. I'm used to games having tutorials and this one just didnt :) .
End turn is for that character. As is action points every character has different different AP amount which is most dependant on good Coordination.

Hello - Trying to remember what that red cross hair to the left of your weapon is for.
I'm glad I found you this early. Believe it or not, I left the station with my terrible terrible team (ranger) and somehow didn't even get to the radio tower but triggered Ag Centre/ Hightower. It's been a year since I've played (never finished early /mid game) and so I thought "ok, why not?"
2 encounters into Hightower I was out of med packs, out of ammo, and the closest to rage quitting I have ever come. Then it dawned on me that maybe I was playing it wrong. Well, not wrong for rookie maybe but who wants to lower the difficulty? Watched your "character build" vid, your "first 2 hours" vid, and now this one.

Thank you very much for this detailed guide. The first video I have watched on your channel. Learned a couple of new things even after 8 hours of game play.
Question: How do I target/destroy enemy cover? Must it be done with explosives? (The game will not let me target the enemies' cover directly). The only time I have ever destroyed cover is by accident (missing an enemy).
Comment/Criticism: For the purposes of guides, I wish you would have used characters at a lower level with lesser gear. It is your playthrough and if you want to farm random encounters or kill NPCs for superior damage weaponry, I understand.
But imo the base audience viewership will not likely do this, especially at a "starting dungeon" like Radio Tower. I would have preferred if you reverted to an earlier "guide save" so I can get an idea if your tactics really do work when you don't have an absolutely overwhelming advantage on the enemy. Hopefully you can make an "Advanced Combat Guide" that would show the enemy actually inflicting damage, using med kits in battle, etc.
+trudeaup Well upgraded weapons (or not) with basic lvl 1 - 2 the Radio Tower fight is extremely easy, it is all about the positioning, so while I understand where you are coming from regarding the gear; it would have made no difference in the outcome. I also have a Radio Tower Guide from non-DC available with starting characters and no upgraded weapons ;)
As to destroying cover, the only reliable ways to do it are a shotgun user with Perk upgrades or explosives. Good luck out there Ranger and thanks for taking the time to comment! =)

I just got in my first fight with some bugs and literally all of my attacks missed for 3 turns so I quit to get help
Just bought it. Huge fallout fan- old and new- so i thought I'd give thia a shot since it plays like Fallout 1 & 2. Definitely need to get used to combat in this one.
hello and sorry this question is so late but I just started playing the game. imm watching this video on my tablet so the resolution isn't the best but did I jjust see the damage on that sniper rifle at 50? and the night stick at 40?! how the hell? you said you only played two to three hours before that example fight at the radio tower (which is the very first mission) where did you get that equipment and how did you afford it? I've been playing for 15+ hours (on hard) and even after I beat highpool and ag, then went back to hq with 2000+ in scrap (dirty deeds) and bought all the best merchandise from hq weapons merchant and I'm just barely touching your sniper damage and I'm half damage with blunt weapon. I've also met with the traveling merchant multiple times and never have I even glimpsed a night stick
+Derek McGowan The M24 Sniper Rifle is a 'rare' find but I was fortunate a travelling merchant had it on her and 'donated' it to my cause. That single fight against the merchant and two guys took like 30 mins and every explosive I had. You can either save up to buy it or you can try to kill the merchant. Good luck Ranger Derek!

Did you try to hire Angela Deth at the very begining and use the shovel on Ace's tomb ? lol
The PS4 version does not allow the camera movement to overlook the field - it does not have the ability to show the opponent's weapon - and it does not have that option that you show (with the sniper) to show range. On PS4 you hold a button that says "attack" and that shows if you can attack - it's range is not as far as you have on the PC and it actually inhibits the ability to "pull" or to attack first.

Well, I've done it twice... there is a bit of RNG to find the 'right' vendor and the battle takes a LONG time. Last time I did it... took the use of grenades and about 30 mins to get through it. Somewhat of a challenge to recreate, but I suppose doable.

I really, really wish you would've made some videos about the random encounters you grind northwest of the citadel at level 1. Those fights are impossible for me to do with this group, even if I save scum. I don't know how the hell you did this with ironman.

How u select someone individualy? There is "U" to select all team members only.
Click on them or highlight one with the cursor.
F1-F4 lets you pick your default goons, if I remember correctly
I'm stuck on how do you have 5 in your party. When you set up your group you only showed 4. I guess I missed something, but I did go back and look again, still same.
It's a follower he picked up at the start, you can have up to three of them.
I found an assault style ranger with SMG, Opportunist and Tactical Positioning works pretty well. Just shoot them in the back to get Tactical Positioning damage bonus, then hopefully part of the burst gets the target below the 30% so you get the extra damage boost from Opportunist. Then for armored targets, such as synths and robots, I go for Energy Weapons and Robotocist.
For a Sniper and Heavy Weapons build, would you go for Whack-a-Mole and Tormentor perks for the extra hit and damage vs targets in cover?
+CaptainBipto With a Sniper, maybe... as for Heavy Weapons, doubt I will ever use it again (just not worth it IMHO).

Hey Mal, I am trying a Two Pump Chump sniper build. Starting off with 9 Coordination and 8 Speed. Giving me AP 10(12) when in combat and CI 11 and +25% to hit. I am going for Bloodthirsty and Tinkerer. My first attribute point will raise Coordination to 10 for another AP point. So I will be on 14 AP in combat for first two turns, plus AP per kill at level 10.
For the R270 sniper rifle thats 2 shots per turn for 2 turns. With the Bullpup thats 3 potential shots per turn for 2 turns. At level 20 and 30 raise speed to 10 for more CI and AP. The other 2 points dumped into Awarness for CI or into Strength for another AP. If I reach 50 by endgame, I could end up with 16 AP for first two turns, I can imagine the carnage I can do with 2 shots per turn with the Dragoon.

I was thinking for a Heavy Weapons/Energy Weapons build. Way of the Squeezins quirk for the +3 AP and +25% damage. If I use the same Coordination and Speed as the above sniper build. With Tinkerer and Bloodthirsty perks. Along with Tactical Positioning and Robotocist. Just run around drunk shooting up stuff. If I get Atomize for energy weapons, and shoot people in the back when drunk. It should do some damage against unarmored targets.

My problem is I can't see past the dark area. Plus the PS4 has really wonky controls. And it's really hard to set up. Any tips?
The "dark area", you mean the fog of war? I assume yes. Not sure how you overcome this on the PS4... can you move your people around individually?

I'm on the ps4 and I do not have options that you do have on the computer I can't set up a fight I can't split my group I can only take one guy out of the group I couldn't with this fight I tried to do that it wouldn't even let me shoot the guy because he wasn't hostile

Just got Wasteland in the ol' Humble Bundle; is Luck really pointless? In fallout it used to help get random encounters and items etc
Friend of mine ran extensive testing on the luck stat... after seeing the results I ave to say, yes, it is pretty much a 'dump' stat. GL out in the wastes!
Mal Yeah your build guide works awesome, I originally put luck on everyone to about 5 or 6 and had a pretty rough time on normal mode, now I feel almost OP on Ranger setting, such an awesome game, appreciate your videos & time
I know this is a combat tutorial, but just a note. If they don't actually initiate combat but start talking, there is a good chance that with the right *ass skills you can browbeat them into letting you pass or giving info.
How do I use ambush on Xbox?
I’m finding the game very difficult. Granted I’m new but I can’t beat a pack of animals random encounter when there’s a 75% chance to run. I came across like 5 lizards, I barely damage them and they poison and destroy me. I’m on easiest difficulty too. Wish the game was a touch easier on easiest difficulty

I have a question tho, do you have any idea if the developers are going to let the game be opened for modding in the future, looking at it, it's like a mod GOLDMINE to be honest, but i haven't found any good mods on Nexus, most of them are outdated :/ the possibilities of new models of characters and equipment and those damn gas masks only available for the ladies - not cool -.- - can you tell me here if you know anything about it ?
+Ayman Nader Glad you found the guide helpful. As to modding, there was discussion during its kickstarter phase that there would be a modding toolkit released at some point. It is something the player base wants, will we get it? I don't think we will sadly. Once WL2 DC has been out a bit though, I am sure people will hack it a bit and create at least some baseline MODs like they did for WL2.

Holy cow, your gear is so much better than my level 4 squad :(. Like... everyone has better guns. This depresses me, and you must of made a lot more money then I was killing those easy guys. I'm guessing you were farming where you said, but man, on Ranger difficulty they were kicking my ass so hardcore. Any tips with making that big moolah to gear out everyone by level 4?

Damian Clark I will likely go with the team I have, already levelled up a bit, geared and I have not encountered any game killing bugs yet. According to the devs the upcoming patch will retroactively fix the lost NPC issues, should you have already encountered a problem. So I suppose the answer is, yes I am waiting for the patch but in truth I have lots of other projects going on right now at the same time. :)
can someone explain me what use "flaggin" quests have cause i dont see any profit (like a mark or so).

I spent 3 hours making a full custom squad. They went to the Ag Center and all got fucked to death by a giant rabbit.

+Mal first random battle, first play through. leader monkey, so leadership 2. i am also having trouble with the first fights to get levels. i save before each battle now, but i lost someone before i got a level to get surgeon and they died, so i started over.
+dave yesiam Stick to the Northwest of the RC, a good way to gauge if a fight is going to be tough is how easy or hard it is for you success on Outdoorsman (to run) is 100% chance or 75% chance to flee means that fight is 'ok' to handle... you get a 50% fight you know you are in for trouble.
Are you using your sniper to pull? Are you forcing the enemies to move to you and using Ambush?
+Mal ambush... now that i see that button. i also found a weapon stash with a thing that was worth enough to get the 540 dollar sniper rifle, it has changed everything. very happy to have this gun.

Well good effort, but this game's mechanics are not too complicated.
Crouch all, select all, wait till every opponent is outside cover, have everybody take a shot at one target + gain 1st turn initiative is just too effective.
For really advanced strategy options I would rather play Jagged Alliance.
+Michalis Marolachakis Actually for people coming into a game like this the combat is quite complicated, the UI, the ICONs, positioning and the like. As to JA vs. WL2, that is somewhat rubbish... correct me, as I may be mistaken but wouldn't a more fair comparison be something like XCOM vs. JA? Wasteland 2 is a RPG that has tactical combat, not a Tactical Combat game that has some story elements (EG JA & XCOM).

For an RPG it sure has a poopload of combat though. I do not think the emphasis of WL2 is quests or anything, you do fight most of the time.
My point was there is no real need to pull fancy tactics out of your hat in this game, although good effort on your part in trying to squeeze what little tactical essence there is in the game.
In your scenario for example, one could simply have his whole squad sit back, even a straight line like in the Napoleonic Wars would work, have them crouch, have all of them pot shot one enemy and gain 1st turn initiative, then finish the rest off or set them to overwatch (since the opponent has only pistols). That is literally 90% of WL2 combat.
I was comparing WL2 to Jagged Alliance because WL2 is retro and Jagged Alliance is an old game. Jagged Alliance showed how easy it can be to implement more tactical elements, things like stealth, camouflage, "I see you, you don't see me" situations.
If anything, the combat of WL2 is comparable to XCOM, except that you can't fire that cheap pre-turn-mode pot shot. XCOM gets away with this type of combat because they add more variation in movement and attacks (flying units and mind-based attacks for example) and there is also the base-building part.
WL2 is a cute little game but it doesn't really know where it wants to be.
I am a Fallout 1 & 2 fan myself and I really hoped they are going to push this to the next level.

Would making a fully melee centered character be viable?
+mrbiofan12 What do you mean by "fully melee centered"? Like one who just has melee skills?
Damian Clark I mean their primary attacking skill is melee weapons, while they may have utility.
mrbiofan12 Well, I haven't watch the video yet, but from my experience it's really helpful to have at least one melee character because, what generally happens is that the enemy ranged character will jump to cover once fighting begins and thus making it more difficult to hit for your range combatants. Thus, rushing ahead with a melee character to hit them can force them out of said cover, and thus negate that advantage for your range combatants. The other thing to remember is that most range characters take a penalty when using their weapons with a big scary person standing right next them, which incidentally is why the AI will usually move them a bit before taking a shot.

I do melee attack and didn’t land a hit :))
